Life in Seoul
Description
Book Introduction
“We have endured, caught between the passion of the 2030s and the experience of the 6070s.
The youth of the 4050 generation, who everyone lived through, but whose lives were not properly recorded.
As time passed, I thought the memories of those days would be scattered by the wind and forgotten, but I brought them back to life, along with the addresses, scenery, and laughter of that time, and captured them in writing.
“I thought I had forgotten everything - but those moments still live and breathe within us.”

Publisher's Review
"Life in Seoul" is an autobiographical essay in which the author, Son Chang-woo, walks through the addresses of time that have passed, reliving and capturing memories of over 40 years, layer by layer.
The youth and daily lives of the 4050 generation, a time everyone has experienced but never properly recorded, are vividly brought to life through the life of one person.
It is a memoir that reminds us that place is time, and time is ultimately people.
As I read the book, forgotten addresses resurface, and the rooms, smells, seasons, and faces of the people the author lived in come to mind one after another.
From his childhood playing in the cultural apartments of Dongdaesin-dong, Busan, to his youth in Sinchon and Changcheon-dong, his first social life in Jangwi-dong and Gongdeok-dong, and finally to his current daily life across several cities and countries, the author calmly depicts how life has continued through the small clue called 'address'.
Son Chang-woo's writing is a delicate blend of serious reflection and witty humor.
The commotion with neighborhood friends, the absurd incidents of school days, the excitement of the city with the Lotte Giants, the pride of childhood and signs of growth captured in a single sports day, etc. are personal memories, but they also naturally share the sensibility of the times of many who lived through the 1970s to 2000s.
It is a piece of writing that is densely imbued with the unique atmosphere and emotions of a specific era.
“Life in Seoul” is not a glamorous biography.
On the contrary, it is a story that shows how seemingly ordinary days shape a person's character, choices, relationships, and career.
Memories that I thought were forgotten suddenly come back to me one day and ask me questions.
"Where did you come from, and what moments make you who you are?" This book is a sincere record of one person's attempt to answer that question, and at the same time, it is a work that leaves readers with a warm aftertaste, allowing them to reflect on their own 'addresses.'
