However, during his lifetime, Van Gogh was an unknown artist who painted over 900 works without rest, but sold only one.
All I had was a friend's sister buying me [The Red Vineyard] about six months before I died.
Although he devoted himself to painting for ten years, people ignored the eccentric and poor artist who painted faces 'ugly' and colors 'strangely'.
The only one who understood Vincent's artistic world and stayed by his side from beginning to end was his four-year-old younger brother, Theo.


Because they both left school at a similar age and started working at an art gallery, they felt affectionate towards each other and exchanged letters throughout their lives.
At this time, Vincent revealed his artistic views in hundreds of letters written to his brother Theo, the only person who understood him and was his patron. These letters were later made known to the world by Theo's wife, Joanna, and people came to love Van Gogh's paintings.


Van Gogh's letters are equally important in understanding his paintings.
Published to commemorate the 170th anniversary of Van Gogh's birth (March 30, 1853 -), "Vincent van Gogh, Paintings and Letters of the Soul" is a compilation of 112 letters Vincent sent to Theo that provide a glimpse into his life and artistic views, along with around 150 related drawings to aid understanding.
Although the letter is easy to read due to its nature, the content is by no means light.
After hearing the artist himself explain the impasto technique (color applied thickly like a lump), complementary color contrast, drawing principles, and the reason for drawing nature, the meaning of the paintings that seemed 'ugly and strange' becomes deeper and more vivid.
Also, as I read each letter, I feel the lives of brothers who supported each other, worked hard, and failed, and I feel infinitely happy and infinitely sad.
