Into the book
Today's world has entered an era of infinite competition.
However, unlike the past era of ideological conflict, we have become a society where people must help each other for their own economic interests.
Therefore, it has become a situation where countries must cooperate and exchange for each other's economic and political interests.
Such exchanges between countries require an understanding of the culture and society of the country of interest, which naturally includes the acquisition of that country's language.

As Korea's status in the international community rises, the number of foreigners wishing to learn Korean has been increasing recently.
Furthermore, the increasing number of overseas universities that are opening Korean language departments or courses is a testament to our national strength.
Moreover, these days, our companies are also advancing into overseas markets in accordance with their own globalization strategies, establishing factories, and hiring and training locals, thereby contributing to promoting the Korean language and culture to the world.
Therefore, as our country develops economically and its status in the world rises, the number of students wishing to study Korean or Korean studies will continue to increase.

At this point, it is very meaningful that the Korean Language and Culture Education Center of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies has published 'Korean for Foreigners 1, 2'.
Our school's Korean language education, which began in 1993 as a Korean language course of the Foreign Language Training Evaluation Institute, has made remarkable progress in both quantity and quality despite its short history, and finally reached a revival in September 2006 with the opening of the Korean Language and Culture Education Center.
The publication of two new textbooks during this period is particularly significant.
It would be no exaggeration to say that all of this is the fruit of the sweat and effort of teachers who have diligently taught Korean in educational settings.
These two textbooks, imbued with the teachers' passion for Korean language education, will serve as valuable guides for Korean language learners.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the textbook writers, Professor Jo Young-mi, Professor Park Ki-seon, and all the staff at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Press and the Korean Language and Culture Education Center who worked hard to make this book possible.
