This year marks the sixth anniversary of the Catholic University Korean Language Education Center's opening.
Over the years, students from around the world have come to our center to learn Korean, and compared to the center's early days, the nationalities, ages, and goals of our students have become more diverse over the years.
Accordingly, the needs of learners have also diversified, and efforts have been made to meet these needs while simultaneously improving the quality and substance of the center's education.

As part of such efforts, 『Happy Korean 1』 was published in 2007, but as the Korean language curriculum at our school, which had been conducted for 3 hours per day, was changed to a 4-hour class system starting in 2009, a textbook that suited the change became necessary.
In addition, the existing 『Happy Korean 1』 did not include listening activities or a workbook, so students had limited opportunities to practice. Therefore, a new textbook was written to supplement this and to adapt grammar, vocabulary, and subject situations to modern trends.

This book is a first-level textbook for learners of Korean. It is a general-purpose textbook that aims to develop all four areas of Korean speaking, reading, listening, and writing, so that learners can independently carry out basic daily life in Korea.
It was written with the goal of creating a systematic textbook that is easy for teachers to teach and easy for students to learn. It was published after a year of revisions and improvements made through direct use of the textbook in classrooms.

There was encouragement and help from many people before this book was published.
I would like to express my gratitude to Professor Kim Jae-cheol, Director of the Korean Language Education Center, who spared no effort in providing full support until the textbook was published; Professor Bae Joo-chae, former Director of the Korean Language Education Center, who provided support in many ways from the planning of the Korean language curriculum to writing, review, and publication; and Professor Choi Yun-gon, a researcher at the Catholic University of Korea Korean Language Education Center, who took an interest in and assisted with the writing and testing of the textbook, as well as all the other teachers.
I would also like to express my gratitude to Team Leader Kwon Jeong-hee, Ms. Jang Eun-ju, and Ms. Jeong In-ae for their administrative support.
We would also like to express our gratitude to Kim Seon-gu and Wang Ji-min, who added vivid and unique illustrations to enhance the textbook, and to Park Ye-jin and Jeong Jae-woo, who recorded the audio textbook, further enhancing the quality of the textbook.
I also express my deepest gratitude to the Korean Cultural Publishing Company for readily undertaking the publication of this textbook despite various difficulties.
