Two materials housed in the Korean Christian Museum at Soongsil University vividly show the struggles of Western missionaries before liberation to learn the unfamiliar language of Korean for missionary work and church management.
In a situation where Korean textbooks and learning methods for foreigners, as well as the Korean language's own notation and grammar system, were not properly established, Western missionaries used their own knowledge to establish a grammatical system for the Korean language, organize translated terms for English, and develop learning methods to quickly learn expressions necessary for missionary work.
Their 'trans-linguistic' practices may seem like 'outdated' knowledge with many limitations from the perspective of modern linguistics, but they are still interesting in that they contain scenes of strange refraction and transformation that occur during the first contact and collision of different cultures.
