For an Italian grandmother, love means putting delicious, lovingly prepared food on the table.
In the past, food wasn't as abundant as it is today, so there weren't many choices.
Food and family were both precious and cherished, and pasta was the perfect choice to feed a family with limited supplies.
*
If you live in Italy, or even if you don't, it's hard not to be captivated by the country's near-obsessive love of pasta.
Our neighbor's dog loves pasta.
Also, I know an electrician and a plumber who are both married, but the electrician goes to his mom's house every day for lunch, and the plumber, who lives far away and can't get to his mom's house, has a kitchenette in his van.
Chingolli, where I live, has a population of only 10,000, but there are two specialty shops selling fresh pasta.
This is a serious matter and carries very important value.
I was chatting with my close friend, Alessandro, the manager of the local supermarket, and asked him about the local pasta dish.
Then, as if he had been waiting, he recommended his grandmother.
Another grandmother, Maria, is eighty-seven years old this year.
*
As lunch was finally served on the table, a plan emerged in my mind.
The idea was to create a sort of Noah's Ark of handmade pasta-making techniques.
My plan was to preserve the unique cooking methods and regional diversity of Italian pasta by traveling around Italy, meeting wonderful women who raise families and cook for them, and collecting their recipes.
The subjects had to be housewives, not professional chefs, over 65 years of age.
This project, titled 'Pasta Granny', is intended to honor all the women who often go unrecognized for their dedication and hard work for their families.
I went straight into action and started looking for the 'Pasta Grandmas' that were so well known by word of mouth.
(...) This book is the result of nearly five years of interviews and filming, and is a visual record and tribute to the admirable women who have joined me in this project, along with their families and friends.

Neither Grandma Domenica nor Grandpa Tony drive.
Of course, there are no cars either.
His son, who lives down the valley, buys him necessities like batteries for his grandfather's hearing aid once a week.
A couple who once raised dairy cattle would drive their herd up to the vast pastures of the Alps and spend the summer there.
I don't raise cattle anymore, but I still walk two hours to find a hut in the Alps.
The couple spends about six weeks in a cozy place without electricity.
“Just a little while ago, I went to plant beans and potatoes.
That way, we'll have something to eat.
There is no set date.
I just go when the weather gets warmer.
“This is the life we know, and I have no intention of changing it.”

Publisher's Review
James Beard Award Winner in the Cookbook Category,
The official cookbook of the million-subscriber YouTube channel "Pasta Grandma"

It is said that if you ask Italians who the best chef is, they will all answer with their own nonna (grandmother).
To them, pasta that still has the taste of their grandmother's cooking is like a warm home-cooked meal to us.
"Grandma's Italian Pasta" is the official cookbook for the YouTube channel "Pasta Grannies," which now has 1 million subscribers and was started by the author with a sense of mission to spread the pasta recipes that grandmothers have prepared for their families their entire lives and to continue the tradition. It also won the James Beard Award (JBA), known as the "Academy Awards of the Restaurant Industry," in the cookbook category.

It is passed down from house to house throughout Italy.
75 original recipes collected

Pasta recipes, which grandmothers have passed down from their grandmothers or mothers and modified slightly, have their own unique characteristics in each region and household.
"Italian Grandmother's Pasta" is packed with 75 home-cooked recipes, including classic pastas we're all familiar with, like lasagna, gnocchi, and macaroni, as well as lesser-known ones like "The Duchess' Snail Pasta."
We provide helpful guidance on everything from kneading and rolling out fresh noodles to how to use leftover ingredients and even alternatives for when seasonal ingredients are difficult to obtain.

It's okay if you don't have all the materials or tools.
The joy of making flexible home-cooked meals with what you have!

Like the generous generosity of grandmothers, this book is full of practical tips that can be applied immediately instead of strict and complicated recipes.
Of course, it's better to use fresh noodles, but grandmothers have endless tips on what to choose when using dried pasta, how to recycle leftover pasta, and the simplest and most reliable way to tell if pasta is cooked.
Unlike typical cookbooks, this book's hidden charm lies in discovering the practical side of grandmothers who hate waste, such as recommending a smaller pot when boiling pasta to save gas.

Beautiful binding and captivating photos that are 200% worth collecting,
And the grandmothers' exciting backstory

The beautiful sentences in the introduction naturally bring to mind the Italian scenery, and the life stories told by the grandmothers are like a novel.
The photos of the eco-friendly home and kitchen, fresh ingredients picked from the garden, and cooking utensils that have been used by grandmothers for a long time like tailored clothes are reminiscent of a photo album.
By following these simple yet warm recipes, you can vividly experience wonderful Italian home cooking.
Immerse yourself in the culinary passion, love for family, and unique life stories of grandmothers behind their diverse pasta recipes!
