Living in a Wooden House: The Owner of "Nine-Kan House" Talks About Living in a Wooden House

“Because home is human life itself,
The memories, emotions, and values that permeate our lives are created through our homes.

So, through the process of thinking about which house to choose,
“My life and my family’s life are being reconstructed.”

move house

Minju Cha, co-founder of Stew House, moved away from the familiar anxiety of the city to a place filled with unfamiliar excitement.
Moving from an apartment to a single-family home isn't just a change of space; it's a change of relationships.
A change from a vertical relationship stacked up and down to a horizontal relationship side by side, a change in the relationships between members within a three-dimensional space.

It was a joy to be able to watch with a smile as the children kicked up dust in the yard and ran up to the second floor with a loud thump.
Sharing food with neighbors, having small parties on midsummer nights, and having friendly conversations with them were all pleasures that came with building a house and moving into the village.
The author's life began to become richer after he traded the taste of life for minor inconveniences.

The author took notes while thinking about the exterior and interior of the house in terms of form, and the emotional meaning of each part of the house in terms of emotion.
And as the writing piled up, I suddenly thought that I wanted to share the story of the 'nine-room house' with people who dream of owning a house.
Even if it's not right now, if you dream of building your own home someday, your heart will flutter like someone preparing for a trip, and the journey will be happy.
That is how the essay 『Nine-room House』, a space filled with people and life, was created.

Into the book
“Many people dream of building a house, but not many actually build one.
Since architecture is human life itself, you must know how to enjoy the many layers of emotions and situations that arise when you start building a house.
The memories, emotions, and values that permeate my life are created through my home.
“Therefore, the process of deciding which house to choose reconstructs my life and that of my family.”
---From "Architecture Creates Good Relationships"

“After the structure of a building is built and finished with finishing materials, in most cases it is impossible to tell what kind of structure the building has.
Wood structures are a wonderful finishing material in and of themselves, so exposing the wood structure creates a space that radiates structural beauty made with good finishing materials.
“The structure is the completion of architectural aesthetics.”
---From "Architectural Aesthetics in which Structure is the Finish"

“Living with sharp emotions is a precarious situation where you can cut yourself internally and cut others externally, but in this city, there are too many people living with sharp emotions that hurt themselves.
I try to live while gradually preparing for the familiar anxiety, but it is not easy.
The reason is that I can't live well in the remaining half of the day given to me after leaving work.
If evenings after work can be as exciting as a trip, wouldn't his life be free from the stress of the day and filled with the happiness of just existing as a human being?"
---From "The Living Room Connected from Breath to Breath"

"So, what is home? I think home is a prologue to the realities of life.
Because the foundation of human beings as dreamers and creative beings is built in freedom.
I think that's the role of home and family.
There is a set time when children can run around and assert themselves freely.
As soon as they enter middle school, children begin to talk less and their sense of self becomes clearer, and they quickly begin to hide in their own world.
“I didn’t want to miss this brief period of dreaming, so a few years later I built a house and moved into a wooden house.”
---From "Interfloor Noise"

“Only when a neighborhood is good can the life within it be comfortable and peaceful.
Daily life is a series of improvisations, and many life events just happen, so it is comforting to have people around us who can quickly comfort and refresh us.
It was important to me that there was a lot of greenery around me, and a place where I could walk and feel nature was included in the 'some'.
A neighborhood where you can walk down the alley and enjoy a leisurely cup of tea at a cafe, where you can instantly sense that people you meet while walking are your neighbors even if you don't know their names, and where you feel a sense of belonging and don't hesitate to help when needed.
If you enter a neighborhood that suits you, the sunlight seems to be more abundant, and there may be a neighborhood that has an unfamiliar but warm atmosphere.
“Even experiences like that will become an architectural experience, so it would be good to frequently ask yourself what kind of neighborhood you would like to live in that takes the environment into consideration.”
---From "What kind of neighborhood do you want to live in?"

The meaning of nine squares

The floor plan of each floor consists of nine rooms, so it was named the ‘Nine-room House.’
It consists of nine square rooms of equal size, three rooms in the front, three rooms on the side, and it is said that this type of configuration was commonly used in wooden architectural cultural properties.
The nine compartments allow for internal space segmentation, making it easy to combine and separate each compartment into a single module.

Places and locations are not defined as individual spaces, but are naturally connected as one space without corridors. This applies not only to the flat surface but also to the vertical space, giving the feeling of living in one large space.
All spaces, including the living room, children's room, bathroom, and playroom, are of equal size and hierarchy and can be used freely according to needs and situations.

The corridors connecting the interior and exterior organically connect various corridors, such as the entrance, the corner window that touches the basement multipurpose room deck, and the stairs that connect the basement and the attic at once, as well as the terraces on each floor, are composed of nine sections, allowing for a variety of spatial experiences.

It is composed of 3 x 3 spaces on the plane and 3 x 3 spaces vertically, and is based on 27 floating spaces, so that the ‘filling’ and ‘connection’ can be adjusted as needed.
