Into the book
Whether you're running a familiar neighborhood route or exploring an unfamiliar place while traveling, running offers a chance to gain a deeper understanding of a city, region, and its people.
Unlike a simple walking tour, you'll have time for self-reflection and can experience a wider area in a shorter amount of time.
In fact, one of the quickest and most profound ways to get to know an unfamiliar city is to participate in local races.
It is also the only way to enjoy exercise and sightseeing at the same time.

--- p.6

The only question they asked me was:
“Will you come back next year?” I tried to recall the pain I felt during the last 32 kilometers, but the memory had already faded, leaving only the joy and excitement of finishing.
“I don’t think he’ll come,” I said.
Then they all laughed and shook their heads.
“We’ll be back,” they added with a confident look in their eyes.
“Absolutely.”
--- p.33

One particularly frustrating day, I decided to put on my sneakers and get out there and sweat.
I hadn't run in months and hadn't even decided on a course, but one thing was certain.
Starting from my house, I planned to pass through both the richest and poorest neighborhoods in the city.
Without a wallet or anything to steal, I was planning to run all the way to the shantytown where outsiders rarely set foot.
It was to expand the view from the lowest to the highest point of the city.

--- p.124

Anyone who has actually seen the Grand Canyon will agree.
The fact that no photograph can properly capture this scenery.
It is 446 km long, 32 km wide, and over 1.6 km deep.
It was the most amazing sight I have ever seen in my life.
At 5:15 the next morning, when we set off from the South Kaibab Trail, it was pitch black, with nothing visible except the light of our headlamps.
Thanks to this, it felt like a normal trail run with friends.
But before us lay a section that descended 1,430 meters over 11 kilometers.

--- p.138

After running up the 570 steps under the tropical morning sun and drenched in sweat, I took a short break to enjoy the cool breeze and panoramic view at the top.
The way back to Hampi Bazaar was a peaceful journey, just like a walk.
We crossed the farmland and arrived at Virupapur Gaddi, a village on the banks of the Tutungabhadra River.
We took another boat across the river and reached the stepped embankment below the Virupaksha Temple.
Women in saris beat the village's laundry hard on the stones that once supported temples and palaces, creating a rhythm of life.
It was ringing out.

--- p.159

After running 11km, we finally arrived at Schlesisches Tor station.
This was the perfect spot to stop and take public transportation back.
But since my body felt lighter after a light run, I decided to continue running west towards the Landwehr Canal.
After a few more miles of residential areas and city streets, the canal and its green paths finally came into view.
When I arrived back at Nollendorfplatz Station, where I started, I had run a total of 19km.
Running this wide section myself gave me a feeling that was a little different from what I had expected.
It was surprising how many major attractions I was able to see in such a short period of time, but what I remember most were the unexpected sights nestled between the major tourist attractions.
--- p.235

I passed through the forest, past Graham Creek and Lone Rock Ridge, and finally arrived at the southern end of Wineglass Bay.
With its crescent-shaped white sand framing the blue Tasman Sea, this was the most beautiful beach I'd ever seen.
In this deserted place, I took off my clothes and slid across the sand into the sea.
And then, shaking off my wet body, I ran the last route back to the starting point.
We returned to Parson's Cove over the pass between Mount Mason and Mount Amos.
Afterwards, I drove quickly to Launceston Airport and barely managed to board the plane.
Suddenly, I felt bad for the person sitting next to me.
Unable to shower, my body, covered in sweat and sea salt, bore the marks of my adventure.
And with adrenaline running high, I couldn't help but gush about this most fortuitous run of my life.
