A word from MD
Trump's Return: Crisis or Opportunity?
Trump won re-election in the 2024 US presidential election.
This is a new book by author Jong-Hoon Park, which explains the pros and cons of the second Trump administration, which will shake up the global trade order, and the impact of America First policies on the international situation.
This paper presents a strategy for what measures South Korea should take in the face of the era of a hard-line Super Trump.
November 19, 2024. Economics and Management PD Oh Da-eun
With the election of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States in 2024, the era of "Trump 2.0" has arrived.
The situation is completely different from the first term of the Trump administration in 2017.
With the second term of the Trump administration expected to be even more powerful, various unfavorable policy directions are expected. However, Park Jong-hoon, an economic expert who has been at the forefront of not only the Korean economy but also the global economy, presents a plan to turn Trump risks into Trump opportunities through accurate analysis and preparation.
In addition, it precisely analyzes what butterfly effects Trump's policies will bring about and what opportunities can be found within them.
The author, who predicted Trump's victory even before the presidential election, defied the predictions of most domestic media outlets, closely examines the global economic landscape, including the massive tectonic shifts in exchange rates, interest rates, and prices in the increasingly powerful Trump 2.0 era, the US-China hegemony war and the reorganization of the trade order, the future of the semiconductor and energy industries, the Ukraine War, the Middle East crisis, and the China-Taiwan conflict, as well as the impact of these changes on the Korean economy.
Along with the author's earnest desire to see the Trump era as a new opportunity rather than a crisis, I hope that South Korea can once again find a path to revival and a leap forward.

Into the book
I believe the media's role is not to blindly support their preferred side and mislead the public into misunderstanding the current situation, but to objectively report the facts so that they can more accurately grasp the reality and provide an opportunity to consider and prepare in advance the impact of the consequences and countermeasures.

Why didn't we know about Trump's popularity? America's legacy media outlets, constantly publishing articles favorable to Harris, have been pushing the narrative of the current state of affairs, so middle-class white Americans have become reluctant to even mention whether they support Trump.
However, as the media environment shifts to new media, old media such as TV and newspapers have lost most of their influence.
In any case, Trump supporters ignored the old media and exchanged information through Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, so Trump's support did not decline despite the concentrated attacks from the legacy media.

Our country is also a country that ultimately lives off the sea.
Because it is surrounded by the sea on three sides, it has been able to expand to any part of the world, and in the process, it has grown at a rapid pace.
Until now, the United States, as a single hegemonic power, has protected the safety of our maritime transportation routes, which has served as a springboard for our rapid growth. However, if a US-China maritime hegemony war begins in the future, we may enter a time when we desperately need sufficient naval power to secure our maritime transportation routes on our own.

President Trump is likely to press Europe, which has become dependent on American energy, to increase its contribution to NATO and defense spending.
In fact, during President Trump's first term, Europe largely ignored American demands. But now, with a significant portion of its energy dependence on the United States and a significantly greater security threat from Russia, it will be difficult for Europe to ignore President Trump's demands.
And if security costs increase like this, the economic situation of European countries, which have already been hit hard by the war in Ukraine, is likely to worsen further.

Some argue that Korea's national debt to GDP has already exceeded 130%, a figure far worse than the OECD average of 109%.
While the severity of Korea's current debt situation is debatable, what is clear is that the rate of increase is unusually rapid. The IMF has consistently warned that Korea's national debt is growing so rapidly that, if not properly controlled, the entire national economy could be at risk.

If South Korea continues to insist on policies that pour the last of its reserves into real estate, it may be able to force housing prices up.
However, in return for the artificial rise in housing prices, Korea's low birth rate problem will worsen, and the purchasing power of Korean households will also reach its worst point.
Here, a new variable has been introduced: the inauguration of President Trump in 2025.
If the policies of the Trump 2.0 era worsen the U.S. fiscal deficit and trigger a resurgence of inflation, long-term market interest rates will rise no matter how much the Fed lowers the benchmark interest rate, and Korea's debt-fueled housing prices could become a deadly poison that threatens the Korean economy.

Publisher's Review
The Super Trump Era: Crisis or Opportunity?
The Path to South Korea's Revival: Turning Trump Risk into Trump Opportunity

The 47th US presidential election was very heated.
Donald Trump and Kamala Harris were locked in a fierce competition right up until the election, and major South Korean media outlets reported with a slightly higher probability of Harris's victory.
In the end, contrary to most predictions, Trump won.
The mistake of boasting about Hillary Clinton's victory during the 2016 US presidential election has been repeated.
The author, who has been working closely with the Korean economy and the global economy for a long time, emphasizes the role of the media as “reporting objective facts and providing opportunities to prepare for the potential impact and countermeasures.”
He also emphasizes that no values or desires should be incorporated into the analysis of the direction of the U.S. presidential election.
This is because when media reports, which are based on accuracy and transparency, are distorted by subjective opinions, it can cause great confusion for governments, businesses, and even individuals.

President Trump's election is expected to bring about significant changes across South Korea's battery, electric vehicle, and semiconductor industries.
The same goes for security issues, defense spending, fiscal deficits, and the future of the military industry.
While President Trump's hard-line policies are expected to be a negative factor, accurate analysis and preparation can turn these uncertainties into opportunities.
"The Trump 2.0 Era" analyzes President Trump's future policies and focuses on the impact they will have on our country.
The goal is to accurately grasp the Trump 2.0 era, which is more powerful than the first Trump administration, and make it an era of new leap forward.

With the cool and accurate analysis of Park Jong-hoon, Korea's leading economic expert
Covering domestic and international politics, economy, and society

As a leading economic expert in South Korea for the past 27 years, the author, who has worked alongside domestic and international economic issues and the field of economic history, calls the new Trump administration the “Super Trump era.”
Because they were heavily armed with even more powerful power.
The author predicts that the Trump era will shake up the global trade order and usher in a fierce US-China hegemony war.
He also cautions against the potential escalation of armed conflicts worldwide and advises that measures should be taken to prepare for situations that could lead to economic difficulties.
This is not a story limited to Europe or China.
It is also closely related to the future of the Republic of Korea.
Already suffering from the worst energy crisis and with national debt at an all-time high, South Korea will face a critical national challenge of finding a way to recover amid the Trump administration's turbulent policies.

The future of South Korea is by no means bright.
Global competitiveness continues to decline due to serious problems such as low birth rates and an aging population, as well as the lack of development in key strategic industries such as semiconductors, AI, bio, and robotics, which are the future food sources.
However, if we can remember the strengths that fostered and developed the semiconductor industry in the past and foster an innovative ecosystem where Korea's talented individuals can demonstrate their capabilities, we still have endless opportunities.
Remembering the Miracle on the Han River, it is time for all of us to seriously consider the revival of the Republic of Korea and the future of its youth.
