The archival book of Champion, the symbol of American sportswear that American vintage collectors have been eagerly waiting for, 『CHAMPION: Everything About Vintage Champion』, has been published by Benchwarmers, a brand that introduces lifestyles of various tastes and interests.
The story of Champion, which was only available through untranslated Japanese magazines for a long time, can finally be comfortably viewed.

The content that was filled in became more solid.
With the goal of creating the ultimate archival book, 『CHAMPION』, over 300 Champion collectors from around the world participated to create a major Champion collection of over 500 pieces.
Along with this, it contains Champion's 100-year history, which was researched extensively, accurate year-by-year tag classification to quench the thirst of enthusiasts, and development stories for each product.
I can confidently say that 『CHAMPION』 is the most detailed and accurate archival book on Champion available today.

We also put a lot of effort into the translation so that 『CHAMPION』 can serve as the definitive guide to the brand Champion for a long time.
Kang Won-sik, who runs the men's lifestyle YouTube channel 'Footage Brothers' and has introduced leading brands such as Canada Goose, Brooks Running, Gramicci, and Drake's to Korea, translated the book with detailed annotations with a sense of mission as a vintage Champion enthusiast.
This is a rare and welcome publication in Korea, where books dealing with subcultures are rare.
If you are a vintage enthusiast, you should definitely collect it and enjoy your favorite culture more deeply.

Into the book
Words to the wise: Next time you're browsing the shelves of a vintage store and come across a Champion with the Running Man logo on it, buy it.
Why? Because if you don't buy it, I will.
--- p.5 From “Preface - Todd Snyder”

Over the past 100 years, Champion has grown from a small sweater manufacturer in upstate New York to a global fashion brand beloved by millions.
Deeply rooted in both the worlds of function and fashion, Champion has served as a blank canvas for generations of youth culture to establish their own unique identity.
Whether on campus, on the field, or on the street, Champion products have set the standard for American sportswear throughout the 20th century and beyond.
--- p.6 From “History of Champions”

One of the biggest mysteries in Champion history is this unique style of sweatshirt, designed in the same year as the reverse weave.
Patented on February 10, 1938 by Sam Friedland (the inventor of the reverse weave), this new style of “athletic shirt” featured a large V-shaped fabric insert at the front and back neck area.
--- p.52 From "Sweatshirt"

Champion salespeople called this sweatshirt “Reverseweave.”
In fact, it would have been wrong to call a sweatshirt a weave since it was a knit, but the name was not changed in the end.
--- p.72 From "Reverse Weave"

Champion/Haines' sponsorship deal for the 1994 and 1996 Olympic Games included providing Team USA athletes with complete apparel for the Olympic Games.
All players were provided with a variety of items, ranging from casual jeans and T-shirts to more dressy suit jackets and slacks.
Among them, the most symbolic garment was the jacket that the athletes wore at the medal ceremony.
--- p.180 From "Jacket"

The heavyweight cotton t-shirt, styled “77QS,” features an athletic fit, a longer length, and reinforced neck and shoulder seams, making it perhaps Champion’s most iconic t-shirt.
Initially, it was released only in header gray and white, and was primarily issued to sports team players and used as practice uniforms.
--- p.190 From "T-shirt"

Publisher's Review
The birth of heavyweight t-shirts and reverse weave,
The history of American casual wear has been with this brand.

A brand leading the vintage consumer culture
King of Sweatshirts, Champion

The used clothing market is growing rapidly worldwide, and the same is true in Korea.
The transaction volume of the online used clothing trading platform 'Bungaejangteo' in the first half of 2023 reached 520 billion won, an increase of more than 50% compared to 340 billion won in 2021.
Within this megatrend, a trend of consuming used and vintage clothing separately is emerging.
Unlike second-hand clothing, which is characterized by its low price, vintage clothing has collectible value as its rarity and value increase with age.
Among them, the popularity of American vintage casual clothing, which has brought about the so-called 'Amekaji' (a Japanese word for 'American casual') craze, stands out.
And for those who consume vintage American casual, there is a brand that is like a symbol: Champion.

Few people realize that T-shirts and sweatshirts, now considered casual wear, were originally high-tech sportswear.
Champion had a huge impact on the clothing industry by creating lightweight, affordable, and easy-to-wash garments when everyone was wearing wool knits.
It's clear that most casual wear brands owe a great debt to Champion.
Learning about Champion is a lot like learning about casual wear.

《CHAMPION》 contains new and diverse aspects of Champion.
You can check out stories that have never been seen before, such as the story of how Champion pioneered a new sales channel called college bookstores, the story of competing with large capital companies like Nike and Adidas for the NBA uniform license, the differences between the patents of Reverse Weave and the story behind its name, and the myth of the production of the Olympic national team uniform, which is considered one of the most shining moments in Champion history.

Over 300 champion collectors from around the world participated
The world's largest vintage Champion collection, with over 500 pieces.

Tags & Threads, the author of CHAMPION, is an independent publisher specializing in American clothing based in New York, USA.
Led by vintage collector Alex Goulet, the company has published several books exploring the past and present of traditional American clothing brands, which have been well-known to domestic American casual wear enthusiasts through books such as "Heavy Duty" (2018) and "Ametora" (2020).

Among them, Champion is the brand that Tag & Thread has focused on the most.
Having already published the vintage Champion archival book, It Takes A Little More: Selected Champion Products 1919-2002, in 2020, Tag & Thread, as recognized Champion experts, planned this definitive book with a strong sense of mission.
By mobilizing all of the manpower we have accumulated over the years, we have received approximately 500 selected Champion products from approximately 300 Champion collectors around the world.
From well-known items like sweatshirts, reverse weaves, and t-shirts, to the sweaters that launched the business, to the sports team uniforms that launched the company in its heyday, and even the boxes and promotional materials used for packaging, it truly captures everything Champion has to offer.

Each product photo was taken with great care, and in the case of tags that are frequently lost, they were converted into clean images through graphic processing to enable even more precise identification.
With this, we can finally clearly see the exact classification of tags, which have changed in a complex manner over the years, by category.
In addition, it is packed with detailed information, including printing techniques still in use today, various materials developed by Champion that revolutionized the industry, and color charts officially used.

The culture of vintage lovers
So that it can spread more deeply and widely

Champion's status in the vintage clothing market is undeniably high.
Without further ado, Champion is one of the icons of vintage clothing.
Nevertheless, it has been a long-standing regret for fans that there is no Champion archival book available in Korean, so they have to look for Japanese magazines.
《CHAMPION》 is a publication that quenches thirst like a shower, and a challenging publication for subculture enthusiasts.

For this challenge, CEO Kang Won-sik, one of the pioneers of the domestic men's fashion industry and widely known as a vintage enthusiast, took on the translation with a sense of mission.
Through 《CHAMPION》, we have made special efforts to provide not only information about fashion but also an understanding of American culture in general, including numerous detailed annotations.
How about exploring Champion, American casual, and even American culture through 《CHAMPION》, a collection of vintage enthusiasts from home and abroad, born from their dedication and dedication? Love always broadens with depth.
The same goes for the love of vintage.
