Modern abnormal psychology
Description
Book Introduction
In 2022, the American Psychiatric Association published the revised version (DSM-5-TR), nine years after the original DSM-5. DSM-5-TR not only revised and supplemented over 70 mental disorders, but also added a new disorder, "prolonged grief disorder," and addressed racial and gender discrimination, among other changes.
In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) released the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), 25 years after the publication of the 10th Revision. This version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) introduced significant changes to the mental health landscape, adding several new disorders, including "gaming disorder."
Over the past decade, a tremendous amount of research has been conducted into the causes and treatments of various mental disorders.
In particular, considerable research has accumulated on mental disorders first introduced in DSM-5, such as somatic symptom disorder and persistent depressive disorder.
In 『Modern Abnormal Psychology (3rd Edition)』, we have tried to reflect not only the new contents of DSM-5-TR and ICD-11, but also the domestic and international research results in the field of abnormal psychology over the past 10 years.
Additionally, in this revised edition, we attempted to change the names of various mental disorders to those most commonly used in current clinical practice.
Although we remain steadfast in our belief that the names of mental disorders should be translated into terms that best reflect the meaning and historical background of the phenomena they refer to, we have changed the names of some mental disorders to reduce the stigmatizing effect of the names and to promote communication among professionals.
For example, the term 'schizophrenia' was replaced with 'schizophrenia', and other terms such as sexual dysfunction, paraphilic disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, and factitious disorder were also used.
