Publisher's Review
Mr. Mumu said.
The mechanical noise of the washing machine and dryer
Sometimes it sounds like the sound of waves.
_In the text
A person who endured life while holding onto a piece of the cold season
Until we reached the beach where the affectionate light was shining down
A new novel by Jo Hae-jin, who has warmly and persistently illuminated people on the edge, has been published as the 001st novel in the Daso series.
"MuMu on the Beach on a Summer Night" is the story of a couple who imagined the sound of the washing machine as the sound of waves and created a romantic beach just for them, and it is also the story of an individual(s) who overcomes loss and loneliness and continues to live.
From the loss of her lover to her second battle with cancer, Kim Eun-hee, who just wanted to let go of everything at the end of her rope, is surprisingly helped to anchor herself back into the sea of life by a complete stranger, Ham Soo-yeon.
The two women, who did not even know each other's faces, gradually develop a relationship where they tell and listen to each other's stories, and remember and are remembered.
In his previous work, “Light and Melody,” author Jo Hae-jin also calmly portrayed the infinitely dark and lonely time someone is going through, and the comfort, like light, that is given to that person.
In this novel, “MuMu on the Beach on a Summer Night,” a “strong and gentle heart” that strives to bring comfort to the lives of others appears repeatedly.
These feelings are sometimes revealed in the form of choosing the life of an 'activist', like an "endangered rare animal," and sometimes in a subtle way, simply curious about a corner of someone else's memory and wanting to know more.
Poet Kim So-yeon described the world of this novel, where “there are characters who want to know about the lives of others,” as “a place where love grows while quietly getting to know others.”
As such, this novel quietly tells us.
That a loose connection with someone can be a comfort in itself.
Life is a series of endless losses, yet the reason we live is simply to remember, to be remembered.
“Do you, the readers, know?
“Half of my novels were written by wine, not me… … .”
The intimate story behind the desk where a novel was born
Work diary "Novelist Jo Hae-jin's Wednesday" included
This novel was written over a period of approximately seven months, from December 4, 2024 to June 30, 2025.
The writing space was mainly a desk placed by the window in the living room of a villa in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul.
Author Jo Hae-jin has a habit of drinking red wine while working.
Another routine I can't miss is lazing around with my two cats, Dansim and Bokhee, taking walks, and reading endlessly.
『MuMu on the Beach on a Summer Night』 includes several diaries bound together under the name of “Wednesday of Novelist Jo Hae-jin.”
When I read the diary, this is the scene that comes to mind clearly.
A woman stops by an unmanned laundromat without any laundry and sits there for a while.
To someone who doesn't know that my job is a novelist, it might seem a little suspicious.
As readers encounter the private moments of the days when a novel was written, they get a glimpse into the world of a person, the place where a story was born.
*Series Introduction*
One novel, and one person's day
Dasan Bookstore's novel series "Daso"
The Dasosa Series is a Korean literature series by Dasan Books that captures the daily life, rhythm, and writing moments of a single story and the writer of that story.
After reading a novel, readers can read the novelist's personal diary, get a detailed picture of his writing days, and even encounter the author as a person by seeing a photograph of the novelist's actual desk.
Every story is born at someone's desk, and sometimes readers wonder who might be sitting at the desk behind the story. This series, which started with this idea, focuses not only on the writer but also on the reader.
Each cover's book tag has a unique printing number, ensuring that each reader owns a unique copy.
By providing a space on the copyright page where book information is written to include the reader's name and the date of completion, we aimed to convey the idea that every novel is completed the moment a single reader reads it.
With the belief that reading a novel is akin to meeting people, the Daso series presents a reading experience as a 'meeting between a writer and a reader.'
We are delighted to announce the launch of the Daso series, a literary collection that captures a single story and a single person's day with the flexibility to embrace stories big and small, and the intimacy of capturing a fragment of everyday life.
