Into the book
Everyone lies.
There are certain telltale signs that people show when they lie.
The worse a person is at lying, the more obvious the signs will be.
I am a trained psychiatrist and clinical psychologist, and I am all too familiar with such signs.
These are the characteristics of people who lie.
I can't keep my body still.
The tone of voice or speech changes.
It's a long-winded list of unnecessary information.
Even the most powerful lie detectors have a 25 percent error rate, but my eyes are almost as accurate.
I can capture the truth through the facial expressions, gestures, and pitch of the voice of the person sitting in front of me.
Always, without exception.
At least lying doesn't work on me.

At first glance, there are many strange things about this house.
The previous owner's furniture still remains.
A corner sofa, an armchair, a coffee table, and even a bookshelf full of books.
I run my hand over the leather cushions of the sofa.
The leather feels stiff and my fingers are dusty, as if no one has sat on it for a long time.
Leather sofas are expensive, so it's rare to throw them away when moving.
Besides, I've never seen anyone leave a bookshelf full of books untouched.
Dust is piled up on the floor, and spider webs are visible in every corner.
I get goosebumps when I remember the feeling of spiders crawling over me.

It is extremely rare for mental health workers to lose their lives to patients.
There are statistics showing that it occurs about once a year in hospital wards.
The victims are mostly young female social workers, and the perpetrators are most often male patients with schizophrenia.
The most commonly used weapon is a firearm.

Of course, even for a psychiatrist like me who rarely sees inpatients, it's not completely safe.
Because during a counseling session, a patient might suddenly jump up, pick up a letter opener on the table, and poke their eye.
However, I feel most comfortable and safe enough treating patients at home.
Instead, avoid leaving dangerous objects like letter openers lying around.
There's no need to test my fate.

I only accept patients whom I have personally met and selected.
There are occasional exceptions, but I intend to stick to the principle going forward.

I browse the bookshelf to find a book that will help me pass the time tonight.
It's hard to imagine Dr. Hale, a psychiatrist, reading a romance novel while semi-reclined.
I also like thrillers better than romance.
Luckily, I have a few Stephen King novels on my bookshelf.
There are books I haven't read, but since I'm going to read them to kill time anyway, I think it's better to read novels I've already read.
First, I picked up 《IT》, but it was so heavy that I almost sprained my wrist.
It's too thick to read overnight.
Finally, I decided to read The Shining.
I tried to pull the book out by hooking my finger on the spine, but it didn't budge as if it was caught on something.
As I pulled harder, I heard a click and the bookshelf began to move slowly.

What is this?

The line is not visible.
He's probably busy lighting a fire in the fireplace or looking after something.
The sides of the bookshelf are slightly away from the wall.
Pushing the bookshelf aside reveals a door hidden inside.
I blink my eyes, dumbfounded.

This is the secret room that Dr. Hale has hidden.

“It’s true, Dr. Hale.
The doctor at the hospital said that.
“I could have died.”
“But you survived.
I am a survivor of the disaster.
You could have bled to death in that shack, but you braved the rain and mud and called for help from a passing car.
That's why I survived."
“But I don’t feel lucky to have survived.
I'm a mess… … .
“I can’t sleep and I can’t work.”
“That’s why you’re here.
To get better.
“This is just the beginning.”
“If he gets caught, we can forget about it.
But every time I close my eyes, I imagine that killer standing at my window, watching me sleep.”
“Yes, it’s ‘imagination.’
Because it's not actually there."
“I don’t know! I’m the only one who can recognize him anyway.
“It’s clear he wants to find me and kill me.”
“That can’t be true.
If I had been looking for you, I would have found you long ago.
“Because he’s an impulsive killer.”
“I think I’m going crazy.
That's all I can think of.
Every time I drive, it feels like that thing is following me.
“I checked the car behind me several times on the way here.”
“It’s all just thoughts in my head.”
--- pp.74-75

Of course, it is wrong to puncture someone else's tire.
It's true that he was rude and selfish first, but I should have acted more maturely than he did.
But I never dreamed that someone would be watching me, and that they would be filming me with a camera.

The moment another text message pops up on my phone screen, my legs give out and I slump down in my chair.

[The newspaper headline just comes to mind.
Psychiatrist and bestselling author Adrienne Hale slashes man's car with a knife.]

I swallow dry saliva.
If this video goes viral, it will really make the headlines.
The career I've built up over the years is over, without any room for leniency.

My fingers are shaking as I type my reply.
I rewrite a short sentence several times.

[What do you want?]
--- pp.124-125

I have never told a man I love him until I am this old.
I've heard it a few times.
Statistically, men confess their love much faster than women.
I also advise my patients not to say "I love you" carelessly unless they mean it.
So I never said anything either.
Because I've never felt like I truly loved the other person.

Perhaps it's because I didn't receive much love as a child.
I wasn't very close with my parents.
My father was a postman and my mother was a receptionist.
The two people, who had only graduated from high school and had no specialized skills, could not understand me, who was unusually smart and eager to learn.
As a child, I was convinced that I was either accidentally switched babies at the obstetrics and gynecology clinic or that I was adopted.
I even had a dream that one day I would be reunited with my biological parents who understood me.
Of course, it was a child's fantasy.

The story of this novel is divided into past and present.
The narrator of 'The Past' is Dr. Adrienne Hale, a psychiatrist and psychotherapist.
The present speaker is Trisha, who has recently moved out of Manhattan with her husband, Ethan, and is working closely with her real estate agent, Judy, to find a house in the suburbs.

Dr. Hale went missing three years ago, and his body has never been found.
The police investigation ended without any significant results.
The 'past' story, narrated by Dr. Hale, is interwoven with the stories of PL, a patient with post-traumatic stress disorder, EJ, a patient with narcissistic personality disorder, GW, a patient with delusional disorder, Dr. Hale's boyfriend Luke, and Page, the book's copyright agent.

PL is the sole survivor of the cabin murders, where three people were brutally stabbed to death, and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
PL, who is about to get married, goes on a short trip to a cabin with her fiancé, accompanied by two friends.
That day, torrential rain poured down, and a knife-wielding assailant sneaked into the cabin, brutally stabbing PL's fiancé and friends before fleeing. PL was also stabbed by the assailant, but fortunately survived. He crawled from the cabin to the main road, where he was barely rescued by a passing car.
Because it was a day of heavy rain, the killer's footprints were completely erased, and the cabin was devoid of any clues. PL sought counseling from renowned psychiatrist Dr. Hale for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

EJ is a character who is so obsessed with inheriting his parents' fortune that he doesn't even try to find a job.
Dr. Hale meets with EJ at his mother's request and concludes that he has narcissistic personality disorder.
Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by exaggerated accomplishments, a strong desire for admiration from others, and a marked lack of empathy. When EJ showed no improvement despite counseling, his mother, Susan, announced she would no longer pay for his treatment.
Dr. Hale is in a position where he has no choice but to stop counseling, but EJ wants to continue.
The uncomfortable tug-of-war between EJ and Dr. Hale, both adept at gaslighting, continues.

GW never trusts anyone else.
He always suspects that someone is trying to kill him, that the pharmacist put poison in the medicine, and that his son, who is after his fortune, is trying to kill him.
Dr. Hale diagnoses GW as having paranoid delusions.

Dr. Hale's boyfriend, Luke, is a computer technician and was once a hacker in high school.
Dr. Hale quickly becomes close to Luke, who installed security systems in his home, and begins to trust him due to his kind and considerate nature.

Dr. Hale always records his counseling sessions.
Although he says it is for reference when writing a book later, he also secretly hides another purpose.
The truths patients confess during counseling sessions are recorded to serve as strong evidence in the event of legal action between the parties.

"Never Lie" is a story about unique and individual characters, and it is full of provocative and cheeky episodes, so there is never a dull moment.
The goal of doctors and patients would be to cure the disease, but the main concern of the characters in this novel is the fulfillment of selfish desires.

The main characters in this novel are all extremely narcissistic and try to satisfy their own desires by sacrificing others.

To keep a secret between two people, one must kill the other.

"Never Lie" traces the events that unfolded at Dr. Hale's mansion, going back and forth between the past and present.
The present situation is the sum total of past events and a starting point for predicting the future.
Only the last survivor will know the truth about what happened at Dr. Hale's mansion.

Dr. Hale writes best-selling books based on his experiences counseling patients, and his desire to solve personal problems leads him to commit acts he shouldn't have committed.
A zero-sum game unfolds between Dr. Hale, PL, and EJ, each prioritizing their own desires.
They perceive others as beings to be used to fulfill their own desires.
It's like they don't care what happens to other people's lives as long as they fulfill their own desires.

This novel is a new style of thriller, woven with imaginative ideas, bold and original settings, and unique and individual characters.
This novel shows various human characters and reveals the secrets of how they survive.
Thrillers often feature a good versus evil narrative, but none of the characters in this novel are particularly good.
Each is devoted to their own selfish desires, adept at lying, and mercilessly killing anyone they deem to be an obstacle to their survival.
They deceive people as needed and use gaslighting to achieve their goals.
They are shameless and unabashed, as if they are justified in all their actions to satisfy their desires.
They show a resolute attitude as if they have the right to not choose the means and methods to achieve what they want.
He will not hesitate to kill to keep a secret and maintain his own happiness.
This is no exception, even if the target is a spouse, parent, or best friend.
If you go out wearing shoes that are so uncomfortable that you can't even walk in them, you're bound to be in trouble.
They prepare elaborate and perfect countermeasures to ensure that their crimes do not get discovered.
On the other hand, he shows an unexpectedly weak side, gets scared by the slightest noise, loves like other people, and tries to maintain a stable happiness.
When you see them worrying about what kind of house to live in, what to eat for dinner, and how many children to have, they are no different from ordinary people.
Their dual attitude may be a way of survival.
Even a cornered rat can bite a cat.
Anyone can do terrible things when they are pushed into a corner.
The characters in this novel each have desperate circumstances, and they try to escape from their crises even if it means lying as if it were nothing.

This novel doesn't miss out on humor either.
The reason Frieda McFadden's books are so enthusiastically received by readers around the world is because the content is so fresh, bold, and original that it has never been seen before.
Frieda McFadden now has readers in over 40 countries around the world, beyond the United States.
He is a writer who is receiving special attention in Hollywood, and several of his novels, including Never Lie, have already signed film rights contracts.
