But the town's rules and traditions are more suspicious than ghosts, making it confusing.

Into the book
This unfamiliar feeling was not unfamiliar.
Every two or three years, Ju-gyeong and Mi-ju moved.
Every time, I said it would be okay this time, but soon things started to stick to Miju, that is, ghosts, and things started to get in the way.

--- p.20

As Yeonhee said, all the houses in the village looked expensive and fancy.
It looked like a rural village made up of luxury homes like any other city.
This was especially true because there was a guard at the entrance to the village.
“Everyone is rich thanks to the fairy?”
Be humble too.
Miju pouts her lips in frustration, but Yeonhee smiles shyly.
“The fairy grants everyone’s wishes.”
--- p.45

“Hwangbo Seong?”
As I emerged from the dark mountain and entered the streetlights, I heard a familiar voice.
Seong shrugged his shoulders as if he had been hit by a hawk.
It was Yeonhee.
Yeonhee was wearing her school uniform, as if she had just returned from school.
As if it were a habit, I held my bag strap tightly and looked at Seong's face as he raised his head, then ran over.
“Did you fall? You got hurt.”
Seong stepped back at the warm hand touching his face.
Yeonhee held his arm tightly.
"Is discipline the problem now? You're bleeding."
--- p.77

“To others, all of this may seem like our desires.
But we believed in life, and now we want our children to live a little more comfortably, don't we? For our children, Yeonhee becomes a martyr, making a noble sacrifice.
And what you have to do is separate Miju from Yeonhee.
“Joo-kyung, you should think about Mi-ju.”
--- p.106

He looked towards the entrance of the village.
The bluish lights of the guard post were visible through the dark trees.
I climbed the hill as fast as I could.
The flashlight he was holding shone here and there as he moved.
Asphalt, overgrown bushes, frogs jumping in the sudden light, a pale tree and a woman standing next to it.
Cheolsik stopped in his tracks.
I just happened to pass by, but the woman was wearing a white hanbok.
Exhaling heavily, Cheol-sik turned the light on again.

--- p.125

Miju stared at the two for a long time.
And he said in a locked voice.
“This is more dangerous than breaking the taboo at Fox Rock.
It's better for you not to know."
Hana and Junyoung looked at each other as they muttered weakly.
"Shouldn't we just hear what's going on and then decide? Even if it's dangerous, there might be something we can do to help."
--- pp.150-151

“Mom, are you okay? My head is bleeding.
“Doesn’t it hurt?”
"are you okay.
“Hold me up and I’ll get up.”
I wanted to tell her to stay still, but given the circumstances, Miju supported Jukyung.
“Brother?”
“It started.”
“Then let’s take the kids out quickly.”
--- pp.179-180

The children continued to push through the thick undergrowth without stopping.
To the mountains, to the mountains.

Publisher's Review
“There are very special rules in Cheongho-ri.”
The secrets of a mysterious and closed village

Cheongho-ri, a mysterious village nestled deep in the mountains.
There are very special rules there.
First, do not covet things outside the village.
Second, boys and girls over the age of 14 should not be in the same place or talk to each other.
Third, never reveal the existence of the 'Fairy' outside the village.
Why does this village have such rules? And who exactly is this "fairy" they speak of?

The power of the Fairy Byeonjae is real.
When others suffered from drought or typhoons, Cheongho-ri had a bountiful harvest every year, healed the sick, and gave wealth to the poor.
The fairy granted the villagers' wishes.
(Page 70)

In Cheongho-ri, the existence of the fairy, namely the fairy Byeonjae, is absolute.
They hang a picture of the Fairy Byeonjae on the front door and pray to her, and they hold a village ritual called 'Dongje' every year, and the village even has special rules created for the Fairy Byeonjae.
Even if someone asks, "Isn't this a cult?", they are confident.
For them, the Fairy Byeonjae is their only faith and hope.
So why don't they reveal the existence of the Fairy Byeonjae to the outside world? Does the Fairy Byeonjae really exist?

Thirty years ago, the fairy who had been living in the Bodhisattva tree began to lose her power at some point.
There was a drought, livestock died, and every household fell into ruin.
I wondered if we had committed some great sin and were being punished by heaven.
But we soon found the answer.
A new vessel was needed, a girl to hold the fairy.

『The Strange Village of Cheonghori』 keeps raising new questions like this, drawing readers deeper and deeper into the mysterious world of Cheonghori.
The strange truths surrounding the village are revealed one by one, but they are intentionally hidden, constantly stimulating curiosity and keeping the tension high as if one is getting one step closer to a dangerous secret.
This work boasts outstanding immersion, with the author's signature concise sentences and unparalleled storytelling ability added to it.

Blooming in a place where there is no hope
Beautiful and warm solidarity

Basically, the point of view of 『The Strange Village of Cheongho-ri』 is not fixed to one character, but the story mainly unfolds from the perspective of 'Miju', who moved to Cheongho-ri from outside.
Miju has been a psychic who can see ghosts since she was young, and in order to escape the ghosts' torment, she goes to Cheongho-ri, her mother's hometown.
And he hears about the village rules and the fairy Byeonjae from his first friend, Yeonhee, in Cheongho-ri.
As the reader feels, Miju also initially has doubts about the village and the fairy Byun Jae.

“Everyone is rich thanks to the fairy?”
Be humble too.
Miju pouts her lips in frustration, but Yeonhee smiles shyly.
“The fairy grants everyone’s wish.” (Page 45)

The village's atmosphere, seemingly hidden away with its luxurious scenery and tight security, is immediately recognized by outsider and psychic Miju.
Then, Mi-ju suddenly asks Yeon-hee what her empty wish was to the fairy Byeonjae, and Yeon-hee replies, "I wish to have a friend who I will never lose no matter what."
Thanks to Yeonhee, who welcomes Miju as if she had known her from the beginning, and Yeonhee's friends who welcome her as if she had known her from the beginning, Miju begins to open her heart little by little, and her life in Cheongho-ri gradually becomes more stable.
I think that if things continue like this, life in Cheongho-ri won't be so bad.

But one day, a few days before the wedding, Yeonhee suddenly disappears.
Without leaving a single word to Miju, who had become a friend he could never part with, like a wish.
There are only rumors that he went to see his family from whom he had been living separately.
With no one knowing the exact facts or Yeonhee's whereabouts, Miju discovers a letter addressed to her.

Miju unfolded the crumpled paper in her hand again.
Yeonhee didn't go see her mother. (p. 147)

Miju contemplates whether to tell her friends about this.
This is because Miju has not yet revealed to her friends that she sees ghosts.
At that time, her friends persuade Miju to confide in them about her worries, thinking that they might be able to help her.
In a situation where there is no future, this may be a moment when a ray of hope comes to Miju, who has always been alone.
After much thought, Miju shares her secret and the contents of the letter with her friends, and together with her friends, she carries out a desperate plan to save Yeonhee while avoiding the eyes of everyone in Cheonghori, including her mother.

The secret of Cheongho-ri, the disappearance of Yeon-hee, and the fate of Mi-ju and her friends.
Despite the many obstacles readers will encounter as they follow the story toward its conclusion, the reader can keep turning the pages without losing hope because of the strong solidarity of the seventeen female students, each united by their own tastes and opinions.
Contrary to what one might think from the material or content, the atmosphere of 『The Strange Village of Cheongho-ri』 is not that dark or scary.
Rather, the bright and cheerful atmosphere is felt thanks to the Dongwoo High School members, Miju, Yeonhee, and their friends.
This is thanks to the unique characters that remind me of the Hawkins Science Circle from the Netflix drama “Stranger Things.”
I hope that by watching these characters navigating the questions before them, sometimes innocently and sometimes cheerfully, readers will also experience the warm power of solidarity in overcoming trials.
