Description
Book Introduction
Five Years of Korean Civil Society, 2014-2019
284 Anchor Briefings Selected by Anchors and Writers

From 2014 to 2019, the 'Anchor Briefing' segment of [Newsroom] hosted by anchor Son Seok-hee was a beloved segment among viewers.
We developed new themes for each day using core keywords.
It was a corner that covered all areas of news, including politics, economy, society, culture, people, and incidents/accidents, but went beyond the level of reporting and included perspectives, criticism, and messages.
The reason why the Korean Broadcasting Critics Association awarded the Broadcasting Criticism Award to 'Anchor Briefing' in 2015 was as follows.

"By clearly exploring the day's big issues across literature, philosophy, and history, it elevated the quality of news in a world overflowing with sensational and provocative news, and by attempting to expand the humanities of news, it opened a new chapter in the rigidity of current affairs reporting."

What makes 'News Briefing' so special is that it records and explains the history of the times we live in, or 'present history', in a language that everyone can relate to.
It was the history of the square and the history of the citizens.
Each of the 950 "Anchor Briefings" is a precious record, but among them, 284 that resonated particularly strongly were selected, organized by topic, and compiled into two books.
The book's carefully selected "Anchor Briefings" are so full of content that even the anchor and author wrote, "The most difficult part of preparing this book was selecting the 284 pieces."
It is a history of our time that we must not forget.

Volume 1 consists of 140 articles on 7 topics, covering the tragedies of modern history, Korea-Japan relations, the MB administration's policies, the lives of citizens, labor, state corruption, and party politics. Volume 2 consists of 144 articles on 10 topics, covering people, disaster crises, social injustice, candlelight government, prosecution and court reform, inter-Korean relations, space and religion, and journalism.
At the beginning of each topic, author Son Seok-hee shared his thoughts and opinions to help readers understand the topic.

Into the book
“Anchor Briefing is the corner that made me an ‘anchor.’
Although I've been in the anchor's chair for over 30 years, I was able to become a true anchor the moment I stood in front of the video wall in the news studio for the anchor briefing.
Which anchor in this world can express his thoughts in his own words like that?
It was only possible through communication with the production team and empathy with the viewers.
Although other broadcasters have since created similar segments, I believe that the significance of Anchor Briefing is particularly significant in Korean broadcasting.”
---From "Introduction"

Publisher's Review
Looking back on that time…
A story that was not told and accompanying commentary

The anchor briefings delivered every day were history itself, and in some ways, they were like ‘historical reviews’ or ‘historical opinions’ of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty.
The commentary or editorial allowed for reflection and contemplation beyond the news.
On the other hand, since anchor briefings are fundamentally within the category of news while also including the anchor's perspective, impressions, and critiques, if you don't understand 'news,' you might not be able to understand what the 'anchor briefing' is trying to say.

Therefore, the book "Anchor Briefing" faithfully captures the history as a record, and looking back on Anchor Briefing from the perspective of 2022, it unfolds the stories that were left unfinished at the time.
There are two main things to keep in mind when trying to record history.
First, it was not simply a book of broadcast scripts, but rather included various materials collected during the broadcast.
This material has the same character as primary sources.
I meticulously collected data from Statistics Korea and OECD, as well as major newspaper articles, court decisions, and statements from key figures.
Second, footnotes were added to content that was well known at the time of broadcast but is now ambiguous or requires explanation.

At this point in time, after the broadcast ended, the comments written while looking back on the anchor briefing at the time were added in the form of a 'review'.
'Postscript' is a backstory related to the topic, and is an additional piece written by the author while reading each one, covering issues to be reconsidered, personal reporting experiences, and the impact of a certain incident on future politics.
If the anchor briefing contained in the three-minute broadcast left a short but powerful impression along with the video, the anchor briefing contained in the two volumes brought out the power of the recorded text that can be reconsidered along with the author's comments.

In an age of loss
To you who says it's the end

The years 2014-2019 were a time of change and upheaval in our contemporary world.

For several days, everyone's heart ached more with self-loathing than with anger.
I suffered wounds that I couldn't explain, and those wounds were scratched open again, leaving another scar... It's an era of loss that's difficult to describe in words.
― Volume 1, '6.
"The End of the Earth is the Beginning of the Earth," "The Age of Loss, No, the Age of Innocence," p. 278

Men and women, old and young, rich and poor, conservative and progressive, South and North… the world is divided into two.
There are no other sides besides those two, and what's more, those two sides are in sharp conflict.
Even a single object can be divided into two due to 'differences in perspective'.
Just like 'two moons'.
― Volume 2, '13.
Two Moons… But' Introduction, p. 228

The turbulent times were an 'age of loss', and it also seemed like a world looking at 'two moons'.
Even though we live in the same world, we push each other away and become divided due to our different thoughts.
It was the same even as we lost young students and neighbors in the Sewol Ferry disaster, and as we witnessed the unbelievable corruption of state affairs.

When I was disappointed, discouraged, and in despair, saying, "It's over," the anchor briefing was like a letter to the viewers.
It is filled with warmth towards humanity without losing its coolness and coldness.
It was both comfort and hope that the anchor briefing provided.
That letter still speaks to us in 2022.

Thematic organization of volumes 1 and 2
What does it consist of?

Son Seok-hee's Anchor Briefing 1.
'L's Sneakers' are on their way home

1.
L's sneakers are on their way home
It contains modern history that has not been resolved and healed.
This is a story about the tragedies of our modern history, including the Jeju April 3 Incident, the May 18 Democratization Movement, and the June Struggle.

2.
I have to tell you, we're still fighting.
Japan is a close neighboring country, but one that is difficult to become close to.
Liquidation, healing, conflict… It contains the history of the two countries and the relationship between Korea and Japan that is not yet over.

3.
The robot fish couldn't swim.
It covers the rivers dug up by the Four Major Rivers Project during the MB administration, the truth behind resource diplomacy, and blacklists and comment manipulation.

4.
Son, have you eaten?
It speaks of different yet similar aspects of life, of ordinary yet precious daily life.
It depicts the lives of citizens who live each day supporting each other, even though they sometimes hurt each other.

5.
Our compassion is as brief as the noonday shadow
This is a story for all working people.
It contains the hope that the small happiness of returning home to a family waiting for you after a hard day's work can continue.

6.
The end of the earth is the beginning of the earth
The times that brought despair to the citizens, the beginning and end of the state administration scandal that led to an unprecedented impeachment.
The anchor briefing did not capture or ignite the heat of that intense time.

7.
Who will make you laugh if I'm not there?
This anchor briefing asks: Have the conservative and progressive parties been fulfilling their respective roles? What is the role of politics?

Son Seok-hee's Anchor Briefing 2.
The wind always blows at your back

8.
Headlock again!
People who have caught the world's attention or people who have sadly parted ways with the world.
Read the patterns they left on the world.

9.
If you're comfortable, I'm comfortable too.
MERS, Sewol, earthquakes, fine dust… These are the things that threatened the lives of citizens along with the saying, “Everyone for themselves.”

10.
What is 'true' and what is 'false'
People who say no to injustice and protest against absurdity.
The absurdities of the world that don't change easily still exist, but if we point them out, demand them, and want them to change... other changes that citizens can bring about.

11.
Necessity appears dressed in the clothes of chance.
Candlelight government.
Is it going as well as the people's high expectations have made?
The citizens' bold questions demanding a changed world still persist.

12.
You guys should just focus on the judgment...
We guarded the factory conveyor belt
The law that should be equal for all.
But the reality is not like that.
It discussed judicial corruption and reform of the prosecution and courts.

13.
Two moons...
however
People who ask which side you are on.
We live in the same world, but we each see two different moons and two different worlds.
But there are moments when I believe that the citizens' desire to bridge that gap remains, and that history will continue to move forward on its long journey.

14.
One Sweet Dream
The South and the North, which had many twists and turns in particular.
An anchor briefing that accompanied each and every one of those historic steps.
Can South and North Korea coexist? And what are the ways to achieve that coexistence?

15.
pale blue dot
Earth as seen by Voyager.
A pale blue dot.
But what's crouching within it are individual beings who embrace the universe like God... While contemplating the infinite universe and the realm of science, it also contains thoughts on the realm of God, perhaps even broader than the universe, and what religion should embrace.

16.
To our viewers
As a journalist with shortcomings from 1984 to the present, and as a scholar contemplating journalism, I share with you my thoughts and reflections.

17.
The wind always blows at your back
A phrase I wanted to give to viewers as a gift at the end of each year's anchor briefing.
I would like to share the same sentiment in the conclusion of this book.
“The wind always blows at your back…”
