Into the book
Orianna wraps her lower body in a pareo, feeling goosebumps run down her body.
I could clearly feel a presence nearby.
I regret not bringing a helmsman or bodyguards, but it's no use now.
She comes down to the lower deck and looks inside the wheelhouse, then peers into the cabin through the windows that run along the hull.
I haven't noticed anything strange at all, but my anxiety just won't go away.
Who am I afraid of now? Adrien? The children? Or the abominable Adele Keller?
Orianna took a deep breath, trying to relieve the pressure that was tightening around her abdomen, but she still felt the lack of oxygen and goosebumps spread across her body.
In the midst of the blazing sun, the dry air with no moisture suddenly becomes sticky and breathing becomes difficult and uncomfortable.
The moment I turn around, I feel the presence of another person again.
There is clearly someone nearby, but they are not visible.
The moment I leaned towards the trap, I noticed a rubber boat tied to the yacht's hatch.
It means someone has boarded the yacht.
I can feel my heart beating loudly in my temples.

Orianna tries to climb back up to the flybridge, but in her haste she stumbles down the ladder steps and falls to the deck.
For a moment, my mind went blank, and when I opened my eyes, I saw a silhouette standing against the sunlight, looking down at me.
The assailant, wearing a black diving suit, is holding a weapon in his hand that may be either a metal skewer or a poker.
Even though the mask was pulled over his face, Orianna recognized the identity of the stranger, and at that moment, a breathtaking fear washed over her.
She is not an opponent that can stand against her.
The assailant struck her head and neck with a metal skewer, and Orianna fell unconscious before she could scream.
As the blood flowing from her body soaks the deck, only the cry of seagulls echoes incessantly.

While the theory that the random robbery led to the attempted murder is gaining ground, Nice prosecutor Philippe Recluse has corrected some of the information being misreported in the media.
No one has testified that they saw the assailant approach the moored yacht in a rubber boat and then secretly board the boat.
There was testimony that an unidentified rubber boat was approaching the yacht on the evening of the brutal assault, but no video footage has confirmed this.
The Nice Police Department's violent crimes unit has yet to conclude whether the incident was a random robbery or a meticulously planned attack, and the motive for the crime remains controversial.
The truth about who harbored such a grudge against Oriana, who gained fame for her outstanding reporting in dangerous areas of the Middle East while working as a reporter for 《RAI》 and later established a publishing company with remarkable success, and committed such a horrific attack, has still not been revealed.
French and Italian police are focusing their investigation on Oriana's mobile phone records, her family relationships and the people she met for work.

Adrien Delaunay was born in 1982 in Villefranche-sur-Mer, Côte d'Azur.
Adrien's father, François Delaunay, is a marine biologist and renowned apnea diver who can survive long periods of time underwater without any equipment.
In the 1990s, he also held the world record for apnea diving.
Adrien spent his childhood traveling between his father's country, France, and his mother's country, the United States.
When Adrien began learning piano, his mother, a professor at Berklee College of Music, discovered her son's extraordinary musical talent.
Adrien studied classical music, but turned to jazz towards the end of his teenage years.

In 1999, a tragic incident occurred when François Delaunay fatally shot his wife during a fight with her husband.
Adrien, who is deeply shocked and runs away from home, goes to New York for a while and spends a period of wandering and deviance.
During his four years of debauchery, Adrien makes a fortune by gambling and playing the piano at a jazz club to earn a living.
He became unable to lead a normal life after using drugs, and despite possessing outstanding musical talent, he was unable to find a way out of his crisis.
The person who saved him from the brink of death due to a drug overdose was saxophonist Cedar Foreman.

Seda Foreman finds Adrien collapsed in front of the jazz bar on Christopher Street.
Veteran jazz musician Seda Foreman takes Adrien to the hospital for treatment and promises to put him in a jazz quartet he leads if he successfully overcomes his drug addiction.
Adrien, who entered a drug treatment center in Switzerland, escapes the devil's trap after receiving both drug treatment and psychiatric treatment.
He met Oriana Di Pietro shortly after successfully completing drug addiction treatment.

Director Shapui was always positive and had a fatherly attitude, reassuring his patients, but today he was not like that at all.
“It’s a stage 4 brain tumor called glioblastoma.” Dr. Shapui tells me the exact diagnosis.
“How many units are there?”
“Stage 4 is the final stage of glioblastoma.”
“There’s a high chance it will spread, right?”
“The transfer speed is also very fast.”
“Is a tumor resection surgery possible?”
“Unfortunately, it’s impossible.” Director Shapui sighs deeply.
“The tumor has already grown to the size of an orange and has taken root in the right parietal lobe.”
Oriana felt terrified as she imagined the tumor, but at the same time, the situation felt unreal.
How on earth did a tumor the size of an orange take root in my head?
“Even if you undergo surgery to remove the tumor, it is impossible to completely remove it.
“I think there is a high possibility of recurrence.”
Orianna tries to get a positive answer by any means necessary.
“How about radiation chemotherapy?”
“Unless the tumor is removed, chemotherapy cannot be a fundamental solution.
“It’s useless and just tires out the patient.”
“What if we injected monoclonal antibodies into the body?”
“That won’t extend your life expectancy.”
“So does that mean there is no hope at all?”
Director Shapui frowns.
“In the past 30 years, I have never lied to you once.
You and I promised not to lie to each other.
“You remember, don’t you?”
“I remember it.”
“To be honest, it’s a very bleak situation.”
---pp.68~69

“Have you ever had a secret lover?”
“You’ve been following me for a while, so you probably already know the answer, right?”
“Don’t tell me what you think, just answer the question.
“Have you ever cheated on your wife?”
“I won’t answer that question because it’s my private life.”
"Private life? A suspect under detention can't refuse to answer questions on the grounds of privacy."
“If you have time, read Solzhenitsyn’s works.
“Our freedom is built on the foundation of others not knowing about our existence.”
“I am interrogating a suspect right now.
“It means it’s not time for a philosophy lecture.”
“It has been a year since the police began their investigation.
I have asked several times how the investigation is progressing, but have not received a sincere answer.
The police and the media have been treating me as a prime suspect, and for over a year I've been living like a criminal, unable to even look at my children properly.
My child's school friends are even openly saying things like, "Your dad killed your mom."
Do you know how painful it is to see a shadow of suspicion in the eyes of my children?”
“Don’t get too excited.”
“Team Leader, you don’t have any children?”
“Why do you ask that?”
“Is it difficult to tell whether you have children or not?”
“I don’t have children, but what does that have to do with this?”
“There are areas that people without children find difficult to understand.
“This world can be divided into those who have children and those who don’t.”
---pp.103~104

“Money has never been a factor that moves me, then or now.
“If you want to be the richest person in the world, you wouldn’t choose to be a jazz pianist.”
“After all, you chose the heir to a huge fortune as your spouse, didn’t you?”
“When I first fell in love with Oriana, I had no idea that her father was one of the wealthiest people in Italy.
“In all my life, I have never once used wealth as a standard for judging value.”
“You always say in every interview with the press that you have lived without being obsessed with money.
But you became a millionaire against your will.
You buy a lot of expensive art, collect luxury watches, and always stay in luxurious hotels.
To maintain your elegant fashion style, you will have to buy and wear incredibly expensive designer clothes.”
Team Leader Justin gets up from his chair and stands behind Adrien.
Then he shows the brand of the polo shirt Adrien is wearing to Detective El Amrani, who is present at the scene.
"Ashraf, do you know that this one polo shirt costs more than our entire monthly salary? It's made from wild llama fur.
“They say it’s the most precious fur in the world.”
While Team Leader Justine is explaining the polo shirt to Detective El Amrani, Adrien turns around in his chair and gets out of her reach.
"Even if it's a luxury brand like Loro Piana, what do you think about charging 3,900 euros for a polo shirt? People call these luxury items 'luxury products' without being overt.
“Ordinary people don’t even know that such expensive polo shirts exist in the world.”
---pp.145~146

Adrien is intelligent, caring, and always funny.
He filled the entire album he is releasing this time with songs praising our love.
According to him, these are the songs that were born thanks to the inspiration I gave him.
His fans and critics call this album his greatest musical masterpiece to date.
A new world unfolds before us.
We make many exciting plans.
They promise to have children, sail around the world, buy a farm in Montana, and buy a fisherman's house in Jose Ignacio.
The taste of happiness is extremely dangerous.
I never want to go back to the old days again.
I am ready to fight.
When I'm by his side, I'm not afraid of anything.
That is because dark nights never come where people love each other.

Publisher's Review
Who raided a yacht and murdered a €3 billion heiress?

Oriana Di Pietro is an heiress to a fortune of 3 billion euros inherited from her father, a prominent Italian businessman, and gained fame as a war correspondent.
She is a career woman who later founded a publishing company and achieved success by demonstrating exceptional business acumen.
She is married to the famous jazz pianist Adrien Delaunay and is a happy and harmonious wife and mother of two lovely children.

Oriana di Pietro, who lacks nothing, is attacked on her yacht anchored off the coast of the Lérins Islands near Cannes, France.
Oriana was found unconscious on the deck of a yacht after being brutally beaten with an iron skewer. Two female students on a passing boat discovered her and reported her to the police.
Oriana was taken to the hospital and died after struggling for her life, and the Nice Police Department's violent crimes unit took over the investigation.

Oriana reportedly boarded a plane from Milan, Italy on the day of the incident and went straight to the yacht from Nice Airport.
As this is an investigation that has attracted a lot of public attention, the Nice Public Prosecutor's Office, the Marseille Court of Justice, and the Marseille Police Department also provide support for the investigation, and the Italian Di Pietro family also hires a private detective and begins their own investigation.
French and Italian media also showed great interest in Oriana's death and reported extensively every day.

The Nice Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit investigates people around Oriana and also focuses on her husband, Adrien, but fails to find any significant clues.
There are no clues left on the yacht, the scene of the crime, that could lead to the identity of the culprit.
Although several fingerprints were found on the yacht, they were not listed in the police fingerprint database, making it difficult to confirm the identity.
The criminal is a very cool, calm, and meticulous person.

Oriana's husband, Adrien, was at the Côte d'Azur mansion at the time of the incident because he was suffering from the flu, and he has a concrete alibi, so he is excluded from the suspect list for the time being.
Adrien was left alone in the mansion because the nanny and the children had gone to see a movie at the Cannes theater.
The pool manager and Adrien's doctor also testify that he remained at the mansion the entire time.
Investigator Justin and suspect Adrien are not lying in their respective positions, but readers cannot take any of their words as truth.
The police investigation has been stagnant for a year without being able to identify the culprit, and media interest has gradually waned.

A year after the investigation began, the Nice Police Department's violent crimes unit received an anonymous tip that they knew where the iron skewer used by the killer was.
The informant ultimately refuses to reveal his identity, but a search of the boathouse he pointed out uncovers the tool used in the crime, an iron skewer.
Oriana's blood and dried hair were found stuck to the iron skewer, which is considered an important clue to prove the crime.
The iron skewer was found in the boathouse attached to Adrien's mansion, and his fingerprints were also found on him, so the Nice prosecutor's office identified him as a prime suspect and issued an arrest order.

Team Leader Justin and Detective Bergomi focus their investigation on the motive behind the crime, and finally uncover a surprising truth that will clear all doubts.
The culprit is a completely unexpected person.
The testimony of the prime suspect contained not a single lie, and the reason why the identity of the culprit was not revealed at all despite the investigation of those around the victim is revealed.
There are unpredictable developments and shocking twists until the ending is reached.

Guillaume Musso speaks in an interview to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his debut, The Child in the Labyrinth.
“For the past 20 years, I've been searching for a story that would resolve all doubts in its final line.”
The New York Times's description of Guillaume Musso as a master of suspense was certainly not an exaggeration.
To clear all doubts about this novel, you have no choice but to read it all the way to the end, as the author says.
Featuring four characters as narrators, this novel is a blend of diverse stories and perspectives.
This novel provides readers with all the information they need to investigate the truth behind Oriana's murder.
Therefore, we can get closer to the truth about Oriana's murder by breathing closely with the four speakers.
Everyone has a desire to change their life, a fantasy of reinventing themselves and becoming someone else.
Each of the four speakers is dissatisfied with their current situation.
This novel shows the process through which their expectations and desires for change lead to results.
Will their desires truly come true? Readers will be deeply immersed in the novel, gripped by a breathless tension until the very last page.
