The Newbery Medal, which annually selects the best work of children's literature, has named "The Golden Castle: A Century-Old Restaurant" (hereafter "The Golden Castle") as its 2023 Honoree.
"The Golden City" is the work of Lisa Yi, a third-generation Chinese-American, and tells the story of Maisie, a brave girl who fights against discrimination and hatred against immigrants, and the warm family that supports her.
The Newbery Medal, celebrating its 100th anniversary, selected "The Golden City" as the work to open the door to the next 100 years. It unravels the discrimination and injustice experienced by immigrants through the eyes of a child, and shows the high wall of prejudice in our society, as well as the warm affection of those who strive to break down and overcome that wall.
In an age where diversity and respect for others are becoming hot topics, this is one of the works we must read now.

"okay.
“Hey, where are you from?”
“California.”
Eva shook her head at my answer.
“No, where are you from?”
“I’m in Los Angeles…….”
“Your people, your country.”
Aaaah.
Now I get it.
“My nationality is American.”
I answer like that, but I add this because I know the real meaning behind Eva's question.
“But if you’re asking about my race, I’m Chinese.”
“Yes, welcome to Last Chance.
Go to the Golden Castle once.
“It’s the best Chinese restaurant in Minnesota!”
I smile weakly.
Since meeting Ginger in first grade, he has been chatting nonstop whenever he is with her, but becomes silent in front of strangers.

Laying the railroad required clearing mountains of solid granite, a dangerous task that sometimes claimed lives.
The most dangerous mission among them was assigned to the 'Chinese guy'.
The man in charge of the job was tied to a rope and lowered down the cliff, where he pushed a lit dynamite through the granite cliff.
His life was in the hands of the other workers who were pulling up the rope.
I had to pull it up like crazy before the dynamite exploded.
It is said that there were as many as 20,000 Chinese migrant workers who worked on building the railway.
There have also been tragic incidents where hundreds of people lost their lives while doing dangerous work.
But Lucky and Lee Wei felt fortunate to be able to work on the railroad.
Because it was better to be dangerous than starve in China.

“I told you to stop sniffling.”
Opa winks at me as he says that.
Now, it seems like Grandpa has difficulty even winking.
“I’ll do that when I’m dead!”
I frown.
“Stop saying that, old man!”
Oma has a pained expression.
“Dad! How could you say something like that?”
Mom nags too.
Oma and Mom were united in anger and love.
Anger and love are so intertwined that sometimes I can't tell the difference.
“Did I say something wrong?”
Grandfather answers like this.
Werner sits in a corner, looking as if he might cry at any moment.
Werner's 'tell' is obvious.
If this was the way to go when playing poker, Oppa would win every time.
Werner noticed my gaze and made a poker face.
I also have a poker face.

“Opa gives it to Mom.”
My mother's voice trembles as she reads the fateful note out loud.
“Charlotte, you are the best daughter in the world.
“I’m proud of you.”
The day my father asked me to bring home a typewriter, we wrote fortune notes together to put in our fortune cookies.
Opa told people to share these cookies when the time comes.
“When will that be?”
When I asked, Oppa said this.
“When the time comes, you will know.” --- p.337

The first day I came to Last Chance, I made a wish at this well.
That wish didn't come true, that's what I thought at the time.
At that time, I made this wish.
'Please let me go home.'
I just realized that the place I stayed all summer vacation was my home.

Golden Castle, a Chinese restaurant in the small town of Last Chance, Minnesota, is the only Chinese restaurant in the city.
The sign is old, the walls show signs of repainting here and there, there are old photos in the kitchen, and the text on the menu is faded, but it boasts a history and tradition of over a hundred years.
Although it looks like an old and ordinary Chinese restaurant on the outside, Golden Castle actually hides a secret that no one knows about.

"The Golden Castle" is the story of the summer vacation that this old couple's granddaughter, Meiji, spends at the Golden Castle.
It is also the story of Lucky, the ancestor of Meiji, who first immigrated to America.
The story follows two characters, Maisie and Lucky, and alternates between past and present, eventually converging in the present.
After hearing Lucky's story, Maisie realizes that the old photos in the kitchen depict the many immigrants who received help from the Golden Castle.
And the surprising secret of the Golden Castle, known only to the old couple who own it, is conveyed to the readers through the story that the grandfather tells to Meiji.

The history of the countless individuals who passed through the Golden Castle is also the history of the discrimination and hatred they suffered.
Discrimination and crimes based on hate continue to this day, with people forced to endure all kinds of dangerous tasks because they are immigrants, people assaulted for no reason, and even Hwanggeumseong where fires broke out multiple times for no apparent reason.
But this history is also one of fighting against discrimination and hatred, and many people have left their mark on Hwanggeumseong.
When the United States declared its intention to ban Chinese entry and expel them, many Chinese people had no choice but to become sons and daughters of Americans on paper in order to survive, and even then, they had to live with a constant fear of being deported.
They are called 'paper sons' or 'paper daughters'.
The owners of the Golden Castle have treated them to a warm meal for generations, and sometimes even allowed them to stay in the Golden Castle for long periods of time without receiving any compensation.

Now, Meiji continues that history and courageously stands up against hate crimes.
Because the Golden Castle is in danger again.
The bear statue 'Bird', a symbol of the Golden Castle, has gone missing.
While pursuing the culprit, Mei contacts those who passed through the Golden Castle.
Can Meiji identify the culprit? Who perpetrated this hate crime in this small town? The curtain rises on a moving story of a girl who fights across people, places, and generations.

The strong affection of people who overcome hatred
A story about the truth hidden in appearances

Ultimately, 『The Golden City』 can be said to be a story about the affection that people give to each other.
Meiji's grandfather and grandmother dedicated their entire lives to the Golden Castle.
We couldn't even go on our honeymoon.
The grandfather apologizes to the grandmother, but the grandmother later says this.
“We had the longest honeymoon in the world while running the Golden Castle together.” My grandmother, who used to criticize my grandfather for constantly talking about death, treasured the life she spent with him more than anyone else.

Meiji's mother and grandmother bicker whenever they meet.
This is because Mayzie's mother, Charlotte, did not inherit the Golden Castle and left for the big city, choosing a career as a food stylist.
Then one day, Charlotte discovers that her mother has been carefully collecting magazines that she has been in, and realizes that she has been supporting her more than anyone else.
Grandmother never once resented her daughter Charlotte.

The people of the Golden Castle were kind to everyone who stayed there.
Some returned it with betrayal, but many returned it with even stronger affection.
For example, countless paper sons and daughters who received Meiji's call walked from far away to the Golden Castle to say goodbye to their grandfather.
This magical moment, where past moments come together, would never have been possible without the warmth of the people of Golden Castle.

The grandfather's final message to the people ultimately flows into the central message of this book: that we must love one another.
It may sound a bit idealistic and grandiose, but it is ultimately true that only love for one another can make the world happy.
Still, the reason this message comes across so unexpectedly is probably thanks to the warm humor of 『The Golden Castle』.
If you are curious about my grandfather's last message, I recommend opening "The Golden Castle."
