Polar Books publishes a collaboration series of 'Pure Comics X SF Novels'!
Ambitious Second Attempt, 'Shin Il-sook X Deuna' 《Born in 2023》
Polar Books, a comprehensive publishing brand of modern literature that has introduced genre literature with the original fun of stories and distinct colors, is publishing a new series titled 'Pure Love Comics X SF Novels'.
The second story in the ambitiously prepared series is "Born in 2023" by author Duna, a reinterpretation of cartoonist Shin Il-sook's "Born in 1999".
Superpowered people born in 1999 who appeared as saviors.
This time, it's the story of superpowered people born in 2023 who jumped 30 years in time.
However, this story is not a sequel to Born in 1999.
The existing legacy is just a legacy, and Dune has created a new story that even readers who have not read "Born in 1999" can fully understand.
In Dune's own way.
“The following issue is one of the reasons why I took on this project.
《Born in 1999》 was written in 1989, so it is a work from over 30 years ago.
And all works belonging to the science fiction genre become old with time.
Science is old, and the conventions of the science fiction genre are also old.
(Omitted) The old-fashionedness of science fiction novels written in the past is endearing, and we can accept them as they are, but if we were to write a sequel to that work decades later, we would have to compromise between the original and the current flow of the science fiction genre.
I've talked about this many times, but I've never actually experienced it.
“This project was a great opportunity.”
These are Duna's reflections on writing "Born in 2023," as revealed in the author's note. This passage, borne of Duna's deep understanding of the genre's genealogy and grammar, offers a glimpse into Duna's concerns and his ambition to "rewrite classic science fiction."
Author Dune's ambitious attempt, "Born in 2023," will offer a new direction for readers who want to see what science fiction looks like in this era and what is changing.

Into the book
Adamski's lies became less convincing after humanity began sending back photos from spacecraft to the moon and other planets in our solar system.
Yet, those lampshades continued to fly across the sky and be photographed consistently long after the conman's death.
Giant light bulbs twinkling, clearly made by General Electric.
One of those lamp covers was now flying towards Vicky.
--- pp.23~24
The war between Earthlings and aliens was bizarre in many ways.
At first glance, it seemed foolish to confront an alien civilization capable of interstellar travel by force.
However, the alien army was strangely vulnerable to attacks by the Espers, who had begun to appear on Earth in the late 20th century.
The situation has often been compared to the war between the Soviet Union and Afghan guerrillas.
We were prepared for extinction, but it turned out we were fighting a fight we had a chance of winning.
--- pp.26~27
This was more than just existential fear. UNESPC suspected that these thought fragments might be tools of alien brainwashing.
And one person was always pointed out behind the scenes.
Jahel Killets.
The most enigmatic of the 20 chiefs.
Even while the other chiefs were blowing themselves up along with headquarters, there was no way to know where Killets was or what he was doing.
And when something unpredictable and terrible happened out of nowhere, there was a familiar trace of this alien chief there.
--- p.41
Vicky spent the rest of her first day back in Pyongyang reading the materials General Tran had given her.
The material consisted of two reports.
1.
Why Zeta Reticuli 2 is the home of aliens.
2.
Why should Garuda Team be the first expedition to Zeta 2?
--- p.54
What about Vicky? Carla could trust Vicky more.
He wasn't the type of person you could consider a friend.
He was quiet, shy, and above all, he was burdened by the abilities given to him.
But he was honest, trustworthy, and a terrifyingly powerful telepath.
“You’re a martyr type,” said Budayeva.
“There is no middle ground for those born in 2023.
“Either you’re a son of a bitch intoxicated with your own power or you’re a martyr who carries your troubles alone.”
--- p.124
Dido descended, throwing the satellites she had brought into orbit one by one.
At first, there was no sign of any civilization.
Only an invisible signal guiding Dido along the equator showed that the planet was not dead.
But a moment later, hundreds of aircraft appeared over the horizon.
The attack has begun.
Yun-yeong set up a defensive barrier, and Dr. Catrileo attempted evasive flight.
But Dido was stubborn and struggled to stay on course.
Bullets fired from machine guns bounced off the shields or exploded.
Dido felt like she was inside a sparkling Christmas tree ornament.

Publisher's Review
“What we needed in those days wasn’t just ‘romance.’”
A face stranger than memory: A tribute to sci-fi romance comics.
What's the first image that comes to mind when you hear the words "shoujo manga"? While everyone's image will likely vary, the images most familiar with the term likely come to mind are as follows.
"A romance story for girls, featuring beautiful characters with star-studded eyes." Did shoujo manga really have the consistent facial expressions we remember? Perhaps we've failed to properly perceive the diverse faces shoujo manga presents, mistakenly labeling them "romance stories for girls" because we're so familiar with them?
The 1990s, when a romance comic boom occurred in Korea.
The reason we, living in 2024, are revisiting the works of the authors who led the 'sour romance comics boom' is to reexamine the fact that those works, 30 years ago, broke the formula of 'sour romance comics = romance' and played a pioneering role in the science fiction genre.
Kang Kyung-ok, Shin Il-sook, and Kwon Kyo-jeong! For anyone who remembers the "romance comics boom," these three cartoonists need no introduction. To re-imagin their sci-fi romances for today's readers, three novelists at the forefront of the sci-fi genre have joined forces.
What does the pure love comic look like when we look back on it now? A tribute to science fiction pure love comics.
The second installment in the Polar Books "Pure Comics X SF Novels" collaboration series! Introducing a reinterpretation of Shin Il-sook's "Born in 1999" and Duna's "Born in 2023."
“Did you see 'that'?”
Pure romance comics shatter the illusion of "safety"! "Born in 1999"
Reimagining the past with a fresh take on the past! Born in 2023
It is not difficult to imagine the shock that the girls who used to run to the bookstore to buy and pass around pure love comics on the day they were released felt when they saw cartoonist Shin Il-sook's "Born in 1999."
As author Duna said, the girls must have been unable to express their feelings about “Born in 1999” out loud, so they whispered.
“Did you see ‘that’?”
The plot of "Born in 1999" is as follows.
At the end of the 20th century, humanity faces the threat of extinction due to a war with aliens who invaded Earth.
At that time, it was revealed that about 80% of children born in a specific year called '1999', as if they were the saviors of humanity, had superpowers that could fight against aliens, and these '1999-born' children with superpowers were raised as soldiers to fight against aliens.
Among those born in 1999, the protagonist, Chris, possesses outstanding fighting skills and becomes the only female and leader of the alien combat team. She experiences conflicts with her male team members, but eventually overcomes them with her skills and grows as she unites the team.
But to understand the "thing" the girls are talking about, we must delve deeper. Hidden beneath the facade of science fiction and coming-of-age narratives, we delve into a cynical worldview that thoroughly distrusts "romance."
While participating in the 'Pure Comics X SF Novel' project, author Duna is seriously contemplating 'how' to rewrite 'Born in 1999', a work from over 30 years ago.
Because over the course of 30 years, the work has become old, the science has become old, and the conventions of the SF genre have become old.
The answer that writer Dune found is a requel (legacy sequel).
This novel depicts the history of the original, but tells the story of science fiction writer Duna living in 2024! Readers who want to see how the unconventional ideas of the past are now stirring in their hearts should read Duna's ambitious book, "Born in 2023."
