Description
Book Introduction
“I wish I could hear all the songs in the world through just one voice. “If not love, then what is it?” The sweet curse and love of a deadly being that is both human and fish. Author Jo Ye-eun, who began her career by winning the Excellence Award for “Overlap Knife, Knife” at the 2nd Golden Bough Time Leap Novel Contest and is now in her 8th year since her debut, has ambitiously returned with her new novel “Fin in the Mouth.” Having created a sensation of poignant and eerie genre novels with the publication of Tropical Nights, he has since created his own world with captivating stories and a unique atmosphere. The author, who also dealt with the strange cohabitation of a young monster, Pomegranate, who must eat humans to survive, and a middle-aged woman, Ok-ju, in the short story “Meat and Pomegranate” included in “Tropical Night,” has expressed a deep affection for monster stories. I especially love underwater monsters, and I spent my childhood looking up pictures of deep-sea creatures and reading marine legends. 《Fins in the Mouth》 is a work that fully embodies the author's profound taste more than any other work. By combining mermaid tales and siren myths, the story meets readers in a new way, with a cruel yet hazy, sad yet lovely narrative. Seon-Hyun, who met Gyeong-Ju with a beautiful voice at a university composition club and formed a band, spends his twenties filled with joy and passion, but runs into the wall of reality. Unable to bear his mother's nagging, he lives as a civil service exam student, but he cannot give up his dream of becoming a composer who writes songs for singers with outstanding vocal tones. His maternal uncle worked in the shipbuilding industry, but after being laid off due to the IMF, he started smuggling strange creatures, and one day, his skeleton was found buried in the mountains. Seon-Hyeon, who accidentally inherits his uncle's aquarium building, encounters 'Fini', a mermaid with a cut-out tongue who lives in a basement tank. At first, he is terrified and tries to run away, but with the tenacity that has been passed down through generations, he is immediately captivated by Finny's voice, just like his maternal uncle. When a plagiarized version of a song he wrote during his time as a band composer becomes popular and he finds himself in a bitter conflict with Gyeongju, whom he once loved so much, Seon-Hyeon, who is under the sweet curse of a mermaid, crosses a line he must not cross. As Finny's tongue grows, what will be the outcome of his mad love? Cool as Finny's sharp teeth and captivating as her shiny scales, "The Fin in the Mouth" borrows the attributes of a siren who lures humans to their destruction with her enchanting voice, and delicately depicts the cruelty of love that makes one want to give one's body and soul to the other. In addition to the love story between Finny and Seon-Hyeon, which seems to be imbued with the moisture of the tumultuous rainy season, you will be able to experience a new chapter in Jo Ye-Eun's world in that it soothes our youth and shattered dreams, which often fade away in the harsh reality of economic power, like a lullaby. 'The song that came to life with flesh and blood swam through my ear canal, swirling around my earlobes with the most perfect and beautiful tone. What grew in Finny's mouth was a tongue and fins that swam through the unknown sea. The fins danced in the dark, deep sea of linear lines. The moment the dance ended, I thought that it would be okay if my sea disappeared, even if the world ended.' _From the text |

Into the book
Is it possible for love to be made possible by the voice of a stranger you've never even spoken to? But if wishing to hear all the songs in the world through just one voice isn't love, then what is?
--- p.11
A voice this beautiful must sing.
If he were to sing just one song before he died, it had to be one of his own compositions.
--- p.11
“I enjoyed the song.
The song you made is… …like a fin.
A fin that tickles the eardrum.
I know that feeling.”
--- p.22
There has been a lineage of persistence in my maternal family for generations.
My uncle was into chess, and my mother was into knitting and cross-stitch.
My great-grandfather was a janggu player registered as an intangible cultural asset, and my aunt, who ran a restaurant, played the accordion for 30 years.
As you go up the bloodline, you will find monks and craftsmen.
It was the same with Uncle Minyoung.
Every day, my mother would compare Seon-Hyeon to my uncle, looking at him for being obsessed with music and bands.
--- p.23
My father told me this story and said:
Minyoung, you are the most like your father among all the children I created.
So, I always say to be careful with the melody.
--- p.32
There were strange creatures inside that I had never seen before in a video or book.
It wasn't a being that felt unfamiliar simply because it was the first time I saw it.
Anyone who sees the basement will probably realize this as soon as they see it.
They were exceptional beings.
It was something that had been taboo.
A strange life form that humans cannot name, that should not be named… … .
--- p.39
It felt like he was talking to me.
Come here.
I'll give you something good.
Come to me.
He kept moving deeper.
--- p.41
The sound waves seemed to paint a picture on my eardrums.
It must be a very delicate detail.
The slapping sound continued.
As if keeping the beat.
The thrilling rhythm tightened my nerves.
It seemed like it would break, but it didn't, and it fell down limply as if it would continue.
I wanted to scratch my ears.
I was sure that no one could ignore this ticklish, sweet, and painful sound.
--- p.46
It was a sweetness that turned all the sounds that had passed through his ears into noise.
A melody that gently caresses the brain, passing through the ear canal and eardrum.
All the fatigue has disappeared and I feel like I'm rolling on a cloud, as if I've taken some medicine.
The ears that had tasted ecstasy transmitted new desires to the brain and heart.
Humming is not enough.
A more definitive and clearer follow-up was needed.
Lyrics were needed.
I wanted to give you the most beautiful quote in the world.
--- p.51
There was a time when I wanted to hear all the songs in the world sung only with your voice.
If it were possible, I would give my ears and limbs.
--- p.108
Flesh embroidered around the bones, organs piled up like Mont Blanc, and thick, dark red puddles like melted chocolate.
Finny was laughing in the middle of a landscape that resembled hell.
--- p.127
“Finney, you don’t need to know my name.
But remember the song.”
--- p.145
“If we ever meet again, sing my song like you did just now.”
--- p.150
Clap clap clap.
The sound of thin, wet fins hitting the bottom tickled my eardrums.

Publisher's Review
“The pure passion and youth that bordered on madness are over.
“Without any results”
A poignant story about a shattered dream
During his college years, when he should have been diligently preparing for a job, he met Gyeongju, who had a unique voice, in a music composition club and formed a band, which was a fun departure from the mainstream.
To his parents, he is a pathetic unemployed person who “gets upset just thinking about his face,” but he is an aspiring composer with such great dedication and passion that he “would sacrifice his ears, arms, and legs” for a beautiful voice and song.
However, the band disbands due to Gyeongju's betrayal, and he ends up living with the goal of passing the civil service exam.
To Seon-Hyeong, who was studying for exams with difficulty as if he had lost the will to live, the gift 'Pini' left by his deceased uncle Min-Young shows him hope that his dream may be revived.
Finny's ecstatic song, swaying his tail, is "Come here.
I'll give you something good.
It seems to whisper, “Come to me.”
Seon-Hyeon suffers a heartbreaking breakup with Finny due to his ruthless appetite, but he gets a chance to revive his lost dreams by teaching Finny a song he once composed.
As time passed and he became a civil servant in the national education administration, he said that he did not listen to the song for three years because his memory of Finney's song was enough.
One day, Finny appears in the sea near his workplace, Woosung-ri Middle School, and plays a nostalgic melody.
Even though Seon-Hyeon gave up on his dream and chose a different path, Finny will live and move forever in his heart.
Through the character of a dangerously beautiful mermaid and siren, "The Fin in My Mouth" reveals how deeply our dreams, which defy social conventions, can captivate us.
As we grow older, we tend to drift further and further away from the dreams of our youth, but like Finny, who has a homing instinct and remembers everything, dreams occasionally make themselves known to us through memories and longing.
This work makes us believe that dreams do not disappear but are kept, and that even if we compromise with reality, we never fail.
It will soothe our foolishness and regret, which we carry in our hearts as a dream that tickles like a mermaid's fin.
It was a weekend that marked the beginning of the rainy season.
The sky, heavy with moisture, sprinkled raindrops.
Seon-Hyeon thought he had seen a similar scene before.
The once quiet port was soon filled with screams, sirens, and cries.
Through the commotion, a familiar and nostalgic melody reached my ears.
The song blew on the damp wind.
I walked slowly away from the crowds and toward the black sand beach.
Somehow I had a feeling that the face I wanted to see was waiting there.

Hankyoreh Publishing Launches TURN Series
Hankyoreh Publishing is launching a series of genre novels with captivating plots and fresh perspectives, in collaboration with Ridibooks.
This series, planned with the goal of transcending the boundaries of literature through diverse novels such as science fiction, thrillers, and mysteries, in collaboration with Ridibooks, which has been working hard to discover authors with its genre-friendly know-how built on its e-book platform for many years, dreams of the fun and possibilities inherent in stories above all else, adding to its significance.
The Turn series, which hopes to have each writer encounter their own turning point in a world of limitless stories, has secured a solid lineup of writers, from those armed with the passion of a newcomer to those who are currently gaining attention and have solidified their own world.
The latest work of writer Jo Ye-eun, who has been loved for her unique style through works such as “Tropical Night” and “Cocktail, Love, Zombie,” “Fin in the Mouth,” opens the door for “Turn.”
Afterwards, new full-length works by writers Kang Min-young, Seol Jae-in, Kim Dal-li, and Cheong Ye will be released sequentially.
We anticipate that this series, which transcends the traditional literary genre that has been reluctant to engage young readers familiar with visual grammar, will invigorate the stagnant publishing industry by containing sharp imagination.
Author's Note
The ocean is a 20-30 minute walk from the high school I graduated from.
Ten minutes before arriving, the air had become humid and the salty wind had blew my bangs into a mess.
What I hated most was the smell.
At that time, I neither particularly liked nor disliked the sea, but I hated its terrible smell.
Still, it was quite charming to take a leisurely night walk with friends, putting aside the night self-study.
The destination was a desolate coastal park, mostly newly built.
It was simply because I came across it by walking straight from the school gate.
I tried to walk further, but I couldn't.
The dark, surging water blocked the way, making it impossible to find a path.
Streetlights were rare, and the area was filled with run-down shops and museums that were about to open, giving it an eerie, almost eerie feeling as if something was about to jump out.
(I went there to enjoy that kind of atmosphere.
(I wonder if it was some kind of test of courage.) If I held onto the park fence and stood there, I could see the sea shrouded in darkness.
It was so dark that I couldn't tell if it was a mud flat, water, a hole, or space.
As I stared into the darkness, exchanging pointless jokes, I often wondered what lived down there.
I love monster stories.
It's good to read, watch, or write.
Among them, the monsters that live in the water are the most interesting.
When I was young, whenever I was bored, I would look up pictures of deep-sea creatures and read marine ghost stories.
I was also fascinated by the Sirens in Greek mythology, but there was something that made me a little embarrassed while researching the material.
Of course, it was thought to be in the form of a mermaid, but in Homer's Odyssey, it is recorded as a bird with sharp claws.
‘I wanted to write a mermaid story… …’ I felt discouraged and searched for more information.
Fortunately, from the late Middle Ages onwards, they were recognized as spirits of the sea and were depicted as mermaids in many works of art.
I don't know why I find it so enjoyable to write such horrible and disgusting stories when I can't even eat fish intestines or roe soup.
《The Fin in the Mouth》 is a novel full of taste.
I was originally asked to write a short story for a horror anthology with the keywords of city and youth, and came up with a synopsis, but it wasn't that scary at the time, so I didn't finish it.
Now that I think about it, the short story was not enough to contain the whole story.
When Ridibooks suggested serialization, I immediately thought of this story.
It seems like the story waited for a suitable position to arise.
I fleshed out the original synopsis and wrote the draft little by little in various places.
An old cafe in Jongno, a franchise store near Cheonggyecheon Alley, and the lobby of a Jeju Island hotel with an ocean view.
I also wrote this while looking at the thick fog in my hometown during the rainy season.
But I couldn't go to the coastal park near the school.
Now it is no longer desolate.
It has become a well-established tourist destination and welcomes people.
There is clearly a transitional period in space as well.
I was fortunate to be able to see and experience firsthand the process of moving from one state to the next.
I will go there next winter.
I like the sea in midwinter better than in summer.
The wind may be biting.
I got some help from my friend J who works in the AR department.
I would like to express my gratitude for taking the time to answer my sudden and annoying questions.
It was rainy season all the time I was writing the second half.
I hope you enjoy it, as it contains some of the moisture of the past seasons and some of the broken dreams.
