Last Jelly Shot
Description
Book Introduction
2023 6th Korea Science Literature Award, Grand Prize for Novel Debut by sweeping numerous competitions in a short period of time, The appearance of the thoroughly prepared writer Cheongye “I bet the author had fun while writing. “There is a constant flow of humor and energy.” -From the review comments In 2023, author Cheong-ye, who won the grand prize at the 6th Korea Science Literature Award for “The Last Jelly Shot,” was a thoroughly prepared writer. After about three years, he made a splendid debut by winning awards such as the K-Story Contest, Kyobo Bookstore Story Contest, and Com2uS Global Content Literature Award, and received attention as the “most rising new artist.” Finally, he won the Korean Science Literature Award, which gave birth to many new writers, including Kim Cho-yeop and Cheon Seon-ran. Behind this achievement was the author's own unique source of energy. The writer, who originally worked at a public institution researching criminal policy, is obsessed with the idea of doing his own work rather than doing what others tell him to do, and of creating his own stories. (It is said that he also had a desire to sleep in late every day.) His job was to pay salaries to his employees. Due to the nature of his work, he was always careful when working. So, despite the mental strain, he always wrote down the bold stories he had in mind after work. And he decides to quit his job and become a writer. After leaving the company, the writer, who had been diligently continuing his 'writing life', went through several submissions and rejections. The door to a string of winning entries opened in 2021 when “Wednesday Youth Rich Club” won the Kyobo Bookstore Story Contest. After that, the author, who won the Com2uS Global Content Literature Award for “If I Had Superpowers, Would I Get Rid of My Dad First?”, which he wrote out of a desire to write fantasy novels, has now published his first book. The following year, the novel, "Forget-Me-Not Restaurant," which contains the desire to be healed by eating delicious food, was selected for the K-Story Contest, published, and exported to Taiwan and Thailand. And the science fiction novel, “Space in the Rain,” was selected again for the K-Story Contest. The author, who made such a splendid debut, began his career as a full-fledged writer by publishing the youth novel “Spring of Nineteen” in May 2022. In addition, he published many books in a short period of time, including the youth novels “Candy Rain” and “Observing Other People’s Love,” and even secured a contract for film adaptation. And in 2023, he won the long-awaited 6th Korean Science Literature Award, and began to receive public attention. Author Cheongye writes in her ‘Author’s Note’: "Isn't there a jelly you've been hiding and never taken out? Aren't you afraid that if you eat it, you won't be loved? All the answers you need already exist within your heart." The achievements made after many challenges are certainly valuable in themselves. But he doesn't rest on his laurels. All the answers already exist within our hearts, so we just have to be fearless and do what's right in front of us. Before writing in earnest, for writer Cheong-ye, 'the jelly she kept hidden and never took out' would have been her 'writing life'. The author took it out, tasted it, and could never go back. Because I have come to know that sweetness. His world of works is lighthearted because he has tasted the 'life of writing', and cruel because he knows the life before the 'life of writing'. 『The Last Jelly Shot』 seems to reflect the author's 'writing life' as it is, and has the power to draw readers in like a jelly that you can't stop eating once you start. |

Into the book
Are all the rules in the world there to tire us out?
I quickly became tired of listening to the author's voice reading from Article 1 to Article 3 of the platform in a strong tone.
It may be because of the somewhat stiff word ‘code of ethics.’
What if, instead of saying it's a code of ethics, we had said it in a cute way, like, "A list of things to follow."
--- p.20
“I would rather ask.
Our ancestors were like people addicted to worry, imagining things that would never happen and being afraid.
It's been over a century since the Judgment came into existence. How long will you continue to obsess over the boundaries between robots and humans? This topic is truly as boring as bone broth.
We are already coexisting with inbots.
It's in your living room, your bedroom, even your company lobby.
But I don't understand why they are so fixated on boundaries and insist on their platform.”
--- p.25
Art, despite being labor, has relatively low demand because its practitioners do not particularly want to be paid by robots.
Superintelligence was lacking in detail.
But it was filled with the desire of people who did not want to be replaced by machines when it came to creation.
Whatever the case, there was a widespread belief that humans were absolutely superior to robots in portraying the invisible world.
--- p.47
On the other hand, the roots of music were not on the conveyor belt.
I didn't even need a manual.
Love, joy, hate, sadness.
The invisible, intangible mind was simply drawn on a tangible object called a musical score.
But, uniquely, they were all the same in that they were made by connecting and assembling several elements to create a single finished product.
X felt like he had opened his eyes to a parallel world.
It was clearly similar to the world of labor I knew so far, but the results were different.
--- p.61
The art of machines or the mechanization of art.
Polo hoped such talk was a far-off quarrel.
He didn't want to allow his dreams to be invaded.
I couldn't give up what was most precious to someone who had chased me to the very tip of my chin, and that too to an inhuman being.
--- p.94
“This is the last gift I can give you.”
X transformed his fingertips into sharp blades.
Polo had to be rescued from the swamp of inefficiency.
I wanted to make you happy.
She approached him, trying to control the 'dream' that kept bending his body.
--- p.99
Deus hesitated whether to go further or not after seeing the appearance of the destination.
He secretly wanted to be assigned to a research facility.
It didn't matter whether it was space science, life science, or environmental science.
If possible, I wanted a place that was clean, modern, and where high-level technologies were discussed.
However, the new party was a place run by fortune telling, and existed on the opposite side of science.
People sometimes called shamanism pseudoscience, but Deus hated even the word science.
faith.
It is a realm of discussing faith and it is often connected to destiny.
--- p.129
He found it funny that there were so many foolish people.
Even when I was at the lab, all researchers worked based on accurate technology and statistics.
Whatever the task may be.
But that wasn't the case for this couple.
If your child is sick, rather than going to a shaman and bowing down to ask for help, you should pay a reasonable fee to a specialist and ask for treatment.
--- p.145
It is a source of satisfaction to save people from ignorance and see them bow in gratitude.
That was Deus's reward and his purpose in life.
But now the reason for living is being interrupted.
He became anxious.
If we went back like this, Galatea would definitely be disappointed.
He couldn't fail like the pathetic third X.
--- p.172
Deus closed his eyes and laughed, touching the tip of Avalokitesvara's nose with his own.
Then he whispered Eureka in his ear.
--- p.179
I returned to the shrine with my wet skirt fluttering.
After wiping my feet cleanly, I climbed onto the stool.
Like humans possessed by gods, I tried to fly by putting strength into my legs.
A sharp pressure was felt as the leather of the sole of the foot touched the claw.
The dull blade dug into the artificial leather as if it were about to pierce through diamond.
Deus jumped higher with a humble face.
The gods that humans believe in imitate the author.
--- p.187
Even though they could care for the bodies of the sick, they could not heal their hearts, so even though they paid a lot of money, the sick people continued to grow weaker.
They waited for a quiet end in a space that was only theirs.
From the moment I discovered the pain until the moment I closed my eyes for the last time.
They always missed others.
But the atmosphere that filled the empty space was filled with silence.
--- p.220
When I tried to open the grape jelly, Akis hid it in her arms, saying that it was the first gift she had received from her older sister and that she wanted to eat it sparingly.
The heart of the person who treasured a jelly worth only three marks was as transparent as the clear sky.
--- p.232
What is family? Why couldn't I become a human family? Humans only receive care and don't give it to themselves.
In the past, Makina thought.
To fully understand the other person's feelings and to be patient without demanding anything is what devotion and true care are all about.
But everything humans do, even caring for the weak, is interactional in their world.
Nothing can be accomplished with one's mind.
--- p.252
The blood inside the body was drained by inserting a needle, quickly sucking it in, and then repeatedly removing it.
All the blood that was drained was thrown on the floor.
A dark cloud seeped over the couple's pale skin.
And he poured the same oil that was overflowing into his body.
The blood vessels of a healthy human were filled with yellow oil.
A non-breathing lump of oil was born.

Publisher's Review
Three beings that resemble even the fatal flaws of humans,
The weight of a single jelly bean that judges their sins
“The belief that humans are a special species is finally bursting out of the blue.”
-From the review comments
'Deus ex machina' is a 'god made of mechanical devices' that appears in ancient Greek tragedy.
This refers to a mechanical device that suddenly solves all the plot clues, but Aristotle criticized this absurdity and stated that such a device can only be used "when talking about past events that humans cannot know, or prophecies, or future events that must be announced."
The names of the three inbot siblings (robots that resemble humans or have abilities that surpass humans) that appear in 'The Last Jelly Shot' are Deus, X, and Machina.
Galatea, the researcher who created the three siblings, gave them the nicknames of Goddess of Intelligence, Goddess of Labor, and Goddess of Nursing.
The three siblings are sent to their respective homes for socialization training, where they try to complete tasks that live up to their nicknames, but fail.
So, you end up having an accident without solving any clues to the plot.
So the three siblings are referred to an ethics trial.
Novelist Kim Seong-jung says, “This work uses the mechanical device called ‘deus ex machina’ as a metaphor to blow the fuse in each chapter,” and despite the brazen strategy, “the impact is the same.”
The robots in the novel try to explain the situation with their own logic, but end up making mistakes and harming humans.
No, it goes beyond harming and behaves strangely.
He cuts off human ears, rides a crowbar in a frenzy, drains human blood, and then injects oil.
There is a peculiar humor embedded throughout this shocking narrative.
Literary critic Ina Young described the novel as “a comic courtroom drama in which an ethical trial is held on an android who has committed a crime.”
Novelist Kim Seong-jung, who appeared earlier, also called this novel “a work full of humor and vitality.”
The robot's tumultuous social adaptation journey can be read as a satire after reading it all.
The joke-like sentences embedded in every corner make the novel even more readable.
But the core content of the novel is weighty and meaningful.
The common theme that the judges were preoccupied with throughout this novel was, "What is a human being?"
Through these three beings, who resemble humans but have fatal flaws in themselves, we are able to reflect on our own existence by projecting our own image.
The narrative of the three siblings, each with their own themes of art, faith, and family, sharply exposes the "most inefficient" aspects of humankind's pursuit of "efficiency."
Through this novel, readers will learn how absurd human expectations are from androids.
Humans expect future androids to have the ability to solve everything at once, like a 'deus ex machina'.
But they must not contain even a little bit of 'humanity'.
This irony is the blatant truth of the 'value neutrality' that humans believe in.
The author clearly and interestingly reveals this thematic consciousness throughout the novel.
The judges confidently invite readers to this trial.
Literary critic Kang Ji-hee wrote the following in her review:
“The unique domain of humans may be an inefficient and irrational hole.
But what if the desire to break taboos, the tragedy of horrific betrayal and murder, could even be likened to this? The novel boldly reaches this point.”
Ultimately, 『The Last Jelly Shot』 hits the most vulnerable and swollen part of humanity and bursts it.
The reader will feel both lighthearted and cool at that point.
Last human shot!
The innocent faith bursts like jelly on the judgment seat
A lighthearted and brutal condemnation of human error
"A liveliness that isn't afraid of cartoonish leaps."
-From the review comments
This novel is exciting in that it 'betrays' the reader's expectations from beginning to end.
The vain beliefs of human beings are lumped together and brought before the judgment seat.
(Like the blue heart on the futuristic scales on the cover) the author bursts that belief through a very small needle.
As if mocking human innocence.
Readers are drawn into such a calm and composed attitude.
In the novel, the one being judged in the judgment hall is the researcher Galatea, but if we delve deeper, we can see that the one being judged is actually the reader of this book.
When we think of courtroom dramas, we often think of scenes of people sitting around tables and discussing things, but that's not the case with "The Last Jelly Shot."
Compared to other novels, it is more vivid, and this is due to its bold and overwhelming expressiveness.
As novelist Kim Hee-sun said, as you read the book, “the details are absurd and cartoonish, but rather than being a drawback, they actually enhance the novel’s liveliness and fun.”
That is why it “enables exciting reading until the very end.”
These vivid expressions make readers feel like they are sitting in an actual courtroom, and the events committed by Inbot also feel like they are watching them through VR.
The novel seems to have a clear grasp of how to captivate and dominate the reader when it comes to 'interest'.
What message does the author want to convey through this "funny and heartbreaking" story? There are certainly many, but in the author's note, the first sentence begins with this:
“The first thing I want to know is whether you enjoyed it.” So, the author wanted the readers to first experience ‘fun’ with this book.
In that respect, this novel can be seen as a complete success.
It's rare for a work to receive a score for "fun" and "interesting" from all the judges.
However, this work received positive reviews from all the judges, who said it was fun and interesting, and novelist Gu Byeong-mo said it was “like a black comedy.”
How did the author manage to create such a captivating work from beginning to end? It's likely due to the author's ingenuity, which he achieves through a "liveliness that doesn't fear comic leaps," and his courageous ability to consistently defy readers' expectations and tell his own story.
Any reader who has ever experienced a courtroom drama that is both engaging and realistic will find it impossible to leave this book unreadable.
