The author of 『13 Steps』 and 『Genocide』 returns after 11 years!
The latest work by Kazuaki Takano, a master of Japanese social mystery.

**169th Naoki Prize Nominee**

Kazuaki Takano, who has secured many fans in Korea with his Ranpo Award-winning novel "13 Steps" and his novel "Genocide," which won the Japan Mystery Writers Association Award and the Yamada Futaro Award and ranked first in various mystery rankings, has returned after a long hiatus of 11 years with his full-length novel "Ghost at the Crossing."
And it's a full-blown psychic suspense story with real ghosts appearing.
This work, which was nominated for this year's Naoki Prize, is set in Tokyo in late 1994 and tightly written about a monthly magazine contract reporter who is assigned to a special feature on psychics and tries to deduce the identity of a ghost captured in a photograph taken at a train crossing.

In an era of social anxiety following the bubble burst, when, ironically, the desire for stories that provoke fear and a sense of crisis was soaring, the social and media environment of the time were vividly conveyed through the scenes of reporters who had to go out and report on the news without internet or cell phones, relying solely on their tenacity and manpower.
Beginning with a single photograph that seems to offer no clues, the film tenaciously delves into the reality of the red-light district and organized crime groups that exploit women, revealing layer by layer the collusion between corrupt politicians and construction companies. This depiction truly demonstrates the skill of a master of social mystery.
"The Ghost at the Crossing," which naturally leads readers into a supernatural being through the power of detail and the fun of the story, is the definitive version of a spiritual novel that only Kazuaki Takano can present.

Publisher's Review
A railroad crossing in a large city where train stoppage accidents occur repeatedly,
The identity of the ghost captured in a single photo captured there

Norio Matsuda, who was once a social affairs reporter for a national daily newspaper, quit his job two years ago when his beloved wife passed away, became heartbroken, and began working as a freelancer. He is currently working as a contract worker for a women's monthly magazine.
But writing magazine articles, which demand a distinctive style, is something he finds difficult to master, and his longing for his wife, which remains undiminished, often strikes him unexpectedly.
One day, about two months before the end of his contract, he is instructed to take charge of a special feature on psychics in place of an injured colleague.
While reviewing the article, a submitted photo of a woman caught in the air at a railroad crossing in Shimokitazawa Station, Tokyo, came to light. According to the cameraman's analysis, it was a photo that could never have been taken with current technology.
So, Matsuda begins to investigate in earnest and interviews witnesses and police officers one by one, and gets a clue to the identity of the woman in the murder case that occurred a year ago.
He had been skeptical of ghosts for two years, having never encountered the spirit of his wife, whom he had longed for so desperately. However, the nature of the investigation and the mysterious phone calls he received every 1:03 in the middle of the night point to a truth he cannot deny.

It is done in the midst of intense reporting
Communion between the dead and the living

Why 1994? The author created a sophisticated narrative by setting it before the advent of Windows 95, completely eliminating the possibility of individuals easily fabricating photographs using digital technology.
As much effort was put into making other aspects as realistic as possible, as it involved dealing with ghosts.
“The investigative method depicted in this novel was based on materials from the 1970s to the 1990s, when the protagonist was a newspaper reporter, as well as stories I heard from people who knew about the journalistic activities at the time.” (Interview with the webzine Novel Maru) Stories featuring ghosts often focus on stimulating strong emotions, but 『Ghost at the Crosswalk』 approaches supernatural phenomena from a realistic point of view, as if it were a reportage, with outstanding detail, and readers cannot help but empathize with the protagonist who gradually lets go of preconceived notions and biases.
But just as powerful as detailed reporting is the psychological portrayal of the characters that turns skepticism into belief.
One of the sources of inspiration for "Ghosts at the Crossing" is the "Mikawashima Train Disaster" (1962), in which the identity of only one of the 160 victims remains unknown to this day. The emotions of the character who wants to reach the dead because he has lost his family and his obsession with finding out about the unidentified victim gradually intensify and are delicately intertwined as the novel unfolds.
The process of mourning, where the dead and the living come together without provoking sadness or fear, will bring a feeling of emotion not found in other ghost stories.
