And the insect responsible for pollinating about 80 percent of these flowering plants is the honeybee.
Meanwhile, bees were slowly disappearing, while the human population was growing at a frightening rate.
It was believed that pollination was possible by hand or by robots, but the results were not very good.
One small cause ultimately led to catastrophic consequences, causing a sharp decline in global agricultural production.
