Book Introduction
The final edition of 『History Newspaper』 and 『World History Newspaper』, 『Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper』
Reading modern and contemporary Korean history through newspapers
The conclusion of all learning is history.
Because human life itself is history.
The phenomenon of even people who are not particularly interested in history having an obsession with studying history is not unrelated to this.
The problem, however, is that studying history is not that easy.
『History Newspaper』 created a special opportunity for learning history by presenting history in newspaper format.
Newspapers, written in journalistic style, have a low barrier to entry for readers thanks to their easy and concise writing style and diverse visual materials.
The 『History Newspaper』 is a newspaper that has incorporated these advantages into history. The 『Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper』 introduces history in newspaper format, following the 『History Newspaper』 and the 『World History Newspaper』.
『History Newspaper』 consists of two volumes, with volume 1 covering modern history and volume 2 covering contemporary history.
Volume 1, ‘Modern Times’, covers the process from the opening of ports to liberation.
It consists of a total of 20 issues, and while it primarily deals with Korean history, it also includes a perspective that views Korean history within the context of world history.
For example, by describing the Great Depression of 1929, Ibsen's A Doll's House, and the New Women's Movement, it captures the connections between Korean history and world history.

Publisher's Review
The publication of the "Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper," which combines modern and contemporary history from around the world and Korea.
The final installment in the history series, presented in newspaper format… Modern and contemporary history as fresh as a freshly delivered newspaper.
【January 29, 2010】Sageseul Publishing, which has been at the forefront of popularizing history with publications such as “History Newspaper” and “World History Newspaper,” has published the final edition of its series on history in newspaper format, “Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper.”
The vividness of the newspaper format, which allows you to experience historical events as if they happened today, is doubled by color photographs and meticulous research.
This brings back to life the modern and contemporary history, which is remembered as a dark period in our history.
Kang Eung-cheon, CEO of Munsa Cheol, who has been working with Sageseul Publishing Company on major publications such as 『World History Newspaper』 and 『Korean Living History Museum』, stated that he planned 『Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper』 to provide a basis for pride in our modern and contemporary history.
A project to restore pride in modern and contemporary Korean history
Lee Deok-il, director of the Hangaram History and Culture Research Institute, agreed with Representative Kang's argument, saying that the Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper instilled pride in Korean modern and contemporary history by viewing it not as the logic of imperialism but as a history of fighting against imperialism.
He added that the 『Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper』 presented a new framework for viewing Korean history within the context of world history, vividly revealing the value of Korean history that fought against the world-historical crimes of imperialism, division, poverty, and dictatorship.
In the preface, the production team of the 『Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper』 urges readers to discover that Koreans are not insignificant supporting characters in world history, but have always been and will continue to be leading figures.
Modern and contemporary Korean history viewed alongside world history
From this perspective, the Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper consistently illuminates Korean modern and contemporary history along with the flow of world history.
Because the historical events unfolding simultaneously in Korea and around the world are edited as if they were contained in a newspaper of the time, readers can experience the thrill of going back in time.
Professor Han Hong-gu of the Department of Liberal Arts at Sungkonghoe University said that one of the virtues of the Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper is that, unlike existing Korean history books, it views major events in modern and contemporary Korea in the context of world history, showing our history within the larger flow of world history. He chose this book as the most recommended introductory book to modern and contemporary history.
New content aligned with the new curriculum
Meanwhile, Kim Yuk-hoon, a history teacher at Seoul's Shinhyeon High School and author of "A Living Textbook of Modern and Contemporary Korean History," said that "Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper" is a book that expresses the contents of history textbooks in the new curriculum, which includes Korean and world history in one textbook, in a newspaper format, and that it seems that it will be able to breathe life into integrated history classes that encompass both Korean and world history.
He expressed his anticipation.
Professor Joo Kyung-chul of the Department of Western History at Seoul National University also said that the 『Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper』 is the most interesting book for serious historical study, and he would like to recommend it to young readers.
This book presents a welcome gift to readers across generations, from adults who want to take pride in their history to young people who want to learn about history in an engaging way.
How was the Modern History Newspaper organized?
Addressing Korea and the world together, moving beyond political bias and pursuing diversity.
The modern period covers the period from the opening of the country in 1876 to the liberation in 1945, and the contemporary period covers the period after the liberation to 2003.
Each volume is divided into 20 issues, covering 2 to 5 years, and special events such as liberation are covered as extra issues.
Each issue is structured around eight pages and covers important events and topics of the period in a newspaper format. At the end of each issue, a catch-up column is provided to tell the truth or anecdotes that were not revealed at the time.
The front page of each issue features an introductory text and a large image that symbolically shows the characteristics of the period.
Pages 2 and 3 cover major events that occurred in Korea and the world during that period, while page 4 features editorials, commentary, and archives.
The following five pages deal with current issues and trends of each period, with topics such as society and economy, six with science, and seven with culture, thus breaking away from the bias centered on political history.
Also, page 8 is a life/short story page, and we have taken care not to miss even the small history of life.
In particular, the Third World communications, which are fixedly placed on page 8, help overcome the narrow perspective of viewing history centered on Western powers.
The "Modern and Contemporary History Newspaper" by the Numbers: Over 30 participants over three years... 1,400 articles, 800 photos and graphics.

Under the supervision of publishing planning director Mun Sa-cheol, approximately 30 people participated, including 15 writers, 5 editors, and 6 art directors and designers from art groups Suryusanbang and Jaunyoung.
