Into the book
I feel like I've lived my life sharing in the courage of the protagonists who have overcome and persevered.
Perhaps it was thanks to the stories I had built up inside me that I was able to avoid running away at every moment of choice.
I've been thinking for a long time that I would like to be able to create a story like that someday, and I've finally ended up writing a book like this.
How will readers read this story? Now, it's time for courage again.
For now, I just have to calm down and wait, believing that at the end of this scary adventure, I too will find that "shining something."

---From the author's note

This is a real family.
Those three.
As if by a curse, God had torn his own heart apart.

--- p.101

Will it ever be completely eradicated?
These terrible memories come back every time I try to forget them.
My heart clenched as I remembered the nightmare that had just started to appear today.

--- p.127

“So I’m going to help you.
“I think I know how to summon that monster.”
(…)
“Instead.”
I'm done.

“Please help me find my dad.”
--- p.159

“I can’t regret it again.
I can't let you lose your family again because of me.
I can't stand that.
I can't live like this.
“I would rather die.”
--- p.187

I'm being punished.
Lee Seo thought.
He himself is now receiving that punishment.

--- p.193

We are tattered scarecrows.
It's tilted so much that if the wind blows just once, it will fall over backwards.
But now I had to be able to stand, because there was a flock of birds swarming over there.
What good would it do to ask now how it got torn and where to start fixing it? After all, I have neither the talent nor the will to fix it.
Curiosity and sympathy are both out of the question.
Sometimes all you need is someone to stand behind you.
For the subordinate, that silent wait was desperate.

--- pp.205~206

Seventeen is either too old or too young to believe in things like fate.
At seventeen, it's more appropriate to try to force the world as you please and label it fate.

--- p.234

I didn't want to die.
I was in so much pain that I wanted to die, but I didn't really want to die.
Even now, I promised myself that I would save my father even if I died… …but I didn’t want to die.
This is what I realized.
Even though it was cowardly and shabby, it was sincere.

--- p.236

“I will try to be happy again.
I'll laugh too.
“I want to laugh.”
--- p.251

Publisher's Review
“When you run away, don’t look back.”
A terrible scream echoed through the peaceful and quiet forest.

The Lee family came on a family trip after a long time.
Unlike her excited six-year-old sister, Lee Ji, and her father, Lee Seo is anxious.
I'm worried about my father's physical condition, who usually suffers from asthma, but had to work too hard the day before, and the awkward atmosphere of a family trip he'd never been on before.
But then thunder and lightning strike, raindrops fall, and dogs bark loudly at the dog farm on the other side of the mountain.
“This trip was never meant to be.” (Page 34)

One evening, when heavy rain pours down, the internet and phone suddenly go out, and Dad heads to the management building to check on the situation.
While Lee Seo is spending time alone with Lee Ji and her father, they hear a strange sound.
The sound of stepping on fallen leaves.
Just as I was tense and on edge from the sound coming from somewhere other than the walkway, I noticed a black shadow passing outside the window.

Dark waves were surging just below the windowsill.
The fluorescent light shining through the window slowly drifted across the stiff, tangled surface.
Filling the window from one end to the other, which was twice as wide as my outstretched arms.

An unidentified beast then attacks the room next to Yiseo's, and a terrible scream rings out.
After a while, the monster disappeared, but Dad, who went to the management office, did not return.
Lee Seo carries Lee Ji on her back and runs to the management building, expecting that her father and the adults will be there.
“I have to run.
I have to run away.
“Faster before it chases you.” (Page 9)

Even if an irreversible fate comes upon me
He will definitely protect us

When Seo-i arrives at the management office, exhausted, she is met not by her father, but by an incompetent employee and Nam-su-ha, a boy her age whom she had met during the day.
Suha came to the retreat center after attending a church retreat at his mother's recommendation.
I felt awkward with the group of strangers, so I went out for a walk alone. I came across something that looked like an inhaler used by asthma patients, with drops of blood on it, and came to the management office.
And I'm worried because Lee Seo, who appears completely different from the daytime when she seemed indifferent and cold, keeps reminding me of someone.
While taking care of Lee Seo's exhausted younger brother, he overhears a ridiculous story about a monster roaming the training center and attacking people.

But the luggage soon witnesses it through the window.
A large black beast attacks an employee who has left to check.
The monster instinctively lets out a scream, revealing its location, and chases it up to the management building.
A large head shoved through the iron door.
Lee Seo finds something familiar in that horrible form.
The eyes that follow Seo in her dreams, the scars on the back of her hand that look like burn marks.
The monster, which makes a “creepy breathing sound like a human laughter” (page 82), reminds Lee Seo of a secret she has been hiding from anyone.
The day my mother had an accident, the secret of that day.

The Essence of English Adult Novels

"The Night the Storm Chases" is a work that shines with the energy of young protagonists who take initiative and solve cases among adults who have disappeared or are unable to fulfill their roles.
This work, which won the Excellence Award at the 3rd Changbi-KakaoPage English Adult Novel Award and was praised as a story about “a group of peers banding together to overcome their inner deficiencies and grow through facing a crisis,” fully showcased the appeal of “English adult novels” through the protagonists who run through an atmosphere full of tension.

The YA jury also selected "The Night the Storm Chases" as the winner, citing its fast-paced plot, solid story, and compelling characters as its strengths.
Like 『Wizard Bakery』, it is a work that allows readers to imagine the characters' future stories with a deep resonance that spans generations from teenagers to adults, and like 『Snowball』, it is a work that depicts a worldview and scenes and is full of cinematic charm, so it is a novel that is more than anything else suitable for the purpose of the 'English Adult Novel Award'.

For those who choose to face their fears
A powerful coming-of-age novel

Another thing to note is that the story involves the main characters facing their inner trauma and growing.
What Lee Seo sees in the monster is guilt over the truth of that day that she had buried in her memory.
The legendary story of a monster that captures “those who deserve to be punished but aren’t” (page 196) sounds like a fate that Lee Seo cannot ignore.
Even Suha, who gives up the opportunity to leave the training center to help Lee Seo, struggles to escape the shadow of his violent father.
Even when it seems like an irreversible fate, this is a powerful coming-of-age novel that will have you rooting for the protagonists who believe in themselves and move forward to protect what is precious.
As the YA judges praised, “We look forward to your next work,” it is a moment to keep an eye on the birth of a new author who has woven a solid narrative with depth.

I fell in love with the characters that I found myself immersed in without realizing it, and that I wanted to comfort and cheer for.
We congratulate the author who keeps us on the edge of our seats until the very last moment of the story, and who makes us look forward to his future works.

It is comprised of works that can be relatable across generations, from teenagers to adults, and that provide both fun and emotion regardless of genre.

K-English adult novels, such as 『Almond』 『Wandeukie』 『Wizard Bakery』 and 『Elegant Lies』, which are recognized for both their artistic quality and popularity, and have the potential to expand into secondary content such as video adaptations, will open up a new world of literature beyond Korea and into the world.
