A novel that is like a keigo but not like a keigoIt's hard to believe that Keigo's full-length novel was published in 2001.
One day, a friend confesses that she is a woman but has a man's heart.
And then there's murder.
Behind the shocking story are hidden questions about gender, social normality, marriage, etc.
A novel that makes you follow the flow of a detailed mystery.

“Everyone in this world is on a Möbius strip.
“There is no perfect man, and there is no perfect woman.”
A new challenge from Japan's bestselling author Keigo Higashino
Demonstrating his foresight beyond his time
Keigo Higashino is one of the greatest storytellers of our time, and his name itself has become a brand.
Since his debut in 1985, he has written numerous bestsellers across a wide range of genres, from full-fledged detective novels to emotional fantasy, social mystery, and suspense, spanning over 35 years.
Regardless of genre, Keigo Higashino's works always possess the essence of mystery, and the themes that demonstrate this are diverse.
His ideas are limitless, from scientific and mathematical subjects, which stand out as a novelist with a background in science and engineering, to sports like snowboarding and ski jumping.
『Unrequited Love』 poses a new challenge within the world of such a writer's works.
This work, which begins with a confession of sexual identity from a friend who spent the intense school days with him, deals with the topic of 'gender', which is very closely related to our lives and is also profound.
While it contains such a heavy theme, it does not miss out on the fun of mystery through the main plot of the story that unravels the truth behind the murder case.
"Unrequited Love" has been loved by countless readers, selling over 1.1 million copies, and has also been made into a drama, creating a lot of buzz and continuing its popularity.
The first edition of this work, published by Somi Media, includes Keigo Higashino's autograph and a message to Korean readers, increasing its collection value.
"Unrequited Love," a masterpiece novel with a profound message about gender, is worthy of being introduced as Keigo Higashino's best human mystery.

Into the book
“I really don’t get tired of talking about the same thing.
No matter how much time passes, I'll still hear about that field goal, and you'll still hear about that last pass.
I'm also upset that I missed out on winning, but it was already 13 years ago.
“Don’t you usually forget?” Sugai said.
Tetsuro smiled silently.
I know full well that Anzai and Matsuzaki are not truly obsessed with the matter.
They just keep repeating the past story because they want to get something back.
--- p.16
“I thought things would change once I got married and had children.
But the reality wasn't like that.
Rather, I became aware of the gap between my body and mind.
I tried my best.
All along… …I kept acting.
If I keep doing this, I think there will come a day when I won't be acting.
But it was no use.
“My heart couldn’t be distracted.”
--- p.45
“I mean...” Lisako raised her voice, took a deep breath, and looked at Mitsuki again.
“I don’t want to end Mitsuki’s life in an awkward way.
Your life has just begun.
If I go to prison like this, I won't be able to come up with any answers.
Or are you content to just claim to be a man behind bars?”
“Then what do you want me to do? Stop talking so irresponsibly.” Tetsuro rose from his chair and shouted.
Lisako straightened her back and glanced at Mitsuki, turning her body slightly towards Tetsuro.
“I will take responsibility.
“Then it’s okay?” he said as if declaring.
“Responsibility… how?”
“I won’t send Mitsuki to the police.
No matter what anyone says.”
--- p.73
“The anxiety and anger that Mitsuki harbors about having a woman’s body are something that all women have, to a greater or lesser extent.
It's not that I don't care because my heart is a woman's.
I'm just used to it.
And then I just give up and live.”
Lisako finished what she wanted to say and returned to the sofa.
He picked up the cigarette on the table and lit it with a lighter.
The smoke she exhaled wafted through the air.
The air is white and hazy, as if expressing the mind of the whole country.
“Risako… forgot one important thing.
It's not just other people who see me.
“There is something called a mirror in this world,” said Mitsuki.
“Don’t you think that the eyes looking into that mirror are also distorted?”
“That could be true.
But now there's nothing I can do."
--- pp.124~125
“Let me be clear.
“I can’t be on your side.”
Hayata's words pierced through Tetsuro's entire body.
I tried to say what he was talking about, but my lips wouldn't move.
“Of course, I don’t have anything yet.
But know this:
You guys know something.
“I know, and I’m trying to hide it.”
(…)
“As you know, my job is to expose what is hidden.
I don't even think about whether it will hurt anyone.
Therefore, I have no choice but to expose what you are trying to hide.”
Tetsuro nodded on his own.
There was something in Hayata's words that made it so.
“But you know,” Hayata continued.
“I won’t target you.
I won't try to get information from you or those around you.
We're going to pursue the case through a completely different path.
I don't know where it will end up.
I don't want to think about what I might lose.
I'll think about it later.
Because this is my way.
“Let’s fight fairly.”
--- pp.188~189
"it's okay.
know.
It's all my satisfaction and I'm the only one making a fuss.
It's called eternal unrequited love.
But it's still precious to me."
Eternal unrequited love, Ira… … .
Even Desuro somehow understood that feeling.
Something you can't help but cling to even though you know it's meaningless.
Everyone has something like that.
Couldn't this be proof that Mitsuki's heart is a man?
--- p.213
“Men and women are like the front and back of a Möbius strip.”
“What does that mean?”
“For regular paper, the back is always the back.
The future is always the future.
There is no way the two sides will ever meet.
But if you think of the Möbius strip as the front and move forward, you will soon find yourself at the back.
That is, both sides are connected.
Everyone in this world is on this Möbius strip.
There is no perfect man or perfect woman.
Also, each person's Möbius strip is not the same.
It's normal for a human being to have some parts that are masculine and other parts that are feminine.
You too have many feminine aspects.
Even if you're transgender, it's not the same.
Transsexuals are also diverse.
There are no two people in this world who are exactly the same.
The person in that photo is also a woman in body but a man in heart, so it cannot be expressed simply with the expression.
“Just like I do.”

Publisher's Review
A shocking confession from a longtime friend who shared the shining days of youth with me.
The twisted friendship and agonized love hidden within it
The third Friday in November is a reunion day for the members of the American football team who sweated together during their college days.
Tetsuro Nishiwaki, the former ace quarterback, runs into Mitsuki Hiura, the team's female manager, on his way home after a drinking party with his teammates.
Mitsuki, whom he had not seen in a long time, felt a sense of disconnect from his previous appearance, which was engraved in Tetsuro's memories.
Because from head to toe, even the voice was male.
To a bewildered Tetsuro, Mitsuki reveals the surprising secret that although she has a female body, she has actually had a male heart since she was young.
“I need an explanation.
But I want you to understand two things.
The first thing is that this story is not a lie or a joke.
The second thing is that my suffering started a long time ago.”
“That guy named me...” Tetsuro muttered along with the words Mitsuki had uttered.
Even though I understood the situation, I somehow couldn't look at this reality straight.
“That’s right,” Mitsuki continued.
“I was a man.
“Long before I met you guys.” (pp. 35-36)
“If I could get a man’s body, I would do anything.
I like it even if it means selling my life.
“I will correct the mistake of God who made me like this.” (p. 49)
Mitsuki's shocking confession didn't end there.
It was reported that a man who habitually stalked a hostess who worked at the same bar was recently killed.
Tetsuro and his wife, Lisako, a former member of the American football team, agree that Mitsuki must avoid being caught by the police if he is to maintain his male appearance in order to "correct God's mistake."
As a friend, he tries to help Mitsuki avoid the police search, but Hayata, a former colleague and reporter, also confronts Tetsuro and his group while pursuing a murder case, and Mitsuki suddenly disappears from their sight.
Tetsuro sets out to find the missing Mitsuki, and in the process, he discovers an unimaginable truth...
Why does our society try to confine everyone to just two categories: "woman" and "man"?
What answer would you give to the question posed by this work?
Published by Somi Media in 2021, "Secret" is a monumental work that won the 52nd Japan Mystery Writers Association Award and elevated the status of Keigo Higashino, the "King of the Uncrowned," to a new level.
It is no exaggeration to say that this is the work that created 'the Higashino Keigo of today', which the author himself revealed as a turning point in his life.
The author himself has revealed that 『Unrequited Love』 is a sequel to 『Secret』.
The keyword at the center of "Secret," which received explosive responses from readers and critics for its premise that the soul of a wife resides in the body of a daughter who miraculously survived an accident, is "the difference between the outside and the inside."
The author brings out this keyword again in this work.
If this was shown as a 'wife and daughter' in 'Secret', then in 'Unrequited Love' it is depicted as a 'man and woman' while also presenting a weighty subject.
Mitsuki Hiura, who appears in the work, has a male mind in a female body, and the story unfolds around this.
By establishing Mitsuki as a central character who moves between the boundaries of gender that are considered to be prescribed as male and female, the film conveys gender issues in various aspects such as transgender, demi-gender, sports, and law.
The play titled 'Santa Claus' is also a device that clearly shows the message the author wants to convey through this work. It sharply points out gender-related prejudice by asking the question, 'Why does Santa have to be a man?'
This play-within-a-play is also connected to Keigo Higashino's first fairy tale, "Mother Christmas," published by Somi Media, bringing joy to fans.
"Unrequited Love" presents various situations and questions the society that tries to establish a rigid binary boundary between women and men.
This message is not limited to gender issues, but extends to all minorities in our society, including adults, children, racial and ethnic groups.
Although this work is shrouded in mystery, it is filled with reflections on understanding and discrimination against minorities, including queers.
This work was first serialized in a literary magazine in 1999, and was first published locally in volume form in 2001.
The fact that he published a work with a thematic consciousness that would be just as relevant today, even 20 years ago, is a testament to Keigo Higashino's foresight ahead of his time.
Without knowing that you are on a Möbius strip
Our story of continuing unrequited love
As social animals, humans live in various relationships with other people.
There are names like friend or colleague, and there are also names like lover or couple.
But just as the boundaries between genders are ambiguous, even these seemingly strong human relationships are ultimately uncertain.
"Unrequited Love" depicts the lives of a couple in their mid-30s, reminiscent of their youth, who thought they knew each other well, sharing a past filled with strong camaraderie, but whose positions change as time passes and they find themselves at different points in their lives.
Readers project themselves into the characters' struggles with friendship and love and reminisce about their own painful memories.
People do not stay in one place or one relationship forever.
Also, no matter how close you are, you don't reveal everything about yourself.
There are secrets that we end up hiding because we like them.
That's why I feel sorry that my earnest feelings don't reach the person I want to be understood by.
In this sense, we may be beings who continue to love one another in a world like a Möbius strip, which cannot be divided into simple dichotomies.
After reading "Unrequited Love," a vague longing that had been dormant in a corner of our hearts begins to blossom, perhaps because the book whispers about this reality.
The author's message to Korean readers
I wrote it with various people in mind.
I hope many different people enjoy it.

It is a work that stimulates the nostalgia that everyone feels, as it throws out a heavy subject while making us look back on the friends who betrayed us during our lost youth and the changes in ourselves.
