Into the book
Murashige's mind was already made up.
He returned to his usual languid gaze and gave an order.
“Put him in the dungeon.
No one should be allowed to meet you and you should never be killed.
“Keep me alive until I say it’s time.”
Kanbe continued to struggle.
Contrary to his usual reputation of being as gentle as water, Ganbei was struggling to the point of being horrifying.
But now that his sword was taken away and his limbs were held, he could no longer run away.
Murashige had already turned his back on Kanbei.
Thus, Ganbei was imprisoned in Arioka Castle.
Causality has begun to move.

“Did you take anything out of Jinen’s body?”
Juemon rolled his eyes.
“It’s unfair.
“What did you say I took out?”
“It’s an arrow.”
"ah.
“Did you mean the arrow?”
Juemon spoke as if his strength had completely drained.
“No, I ran as soon as I heard your voice, but I didn’t see the arrow.
Shironosuke would know that too.”
Juemon's face immediately turned pale as he answered like that.
“My lord.
“Did you really die after being hit by an arrow?”
“…….”
“But, my lord, there were definitely no arrows.
Whoever pulled it out… … No, there’s no way they would miss an arrow, let alone a scoundrel! Are you saying that your lord, Jinen, was hit by an invisible arrow?”
--- pp.59~60
At that moment, Gori Juemon shouted, “Ah!”
Murashige also opened his eyes wide.
When Murashige last saw them, both young warriors' heads had clearly peaceful expressions.
But now, one of the young warrior's heads had one eye closed, and the other was looking to the left.
He was biting his lip so hard that it was bleeding.
Even Murashige's head was filled with hatred that made the hair on his entire body stand on end.
There are many good and bad things in war.
When setting a date, there are good and bad things about the type of food, and even the posture in which you fall from a horse.
The same goes for the shape of Ben's head, a head with both eyes peacefully closed is a good omen.
Juemon, who was staring intently at the strangely shaped head, shouted in a trembling voice.
“My lord, this, this head… is a terrible disfigurement!”
In Murashige's eyes, the head appeared to be smiling.
--- pp.201~202
“Why?”
As I muttered that, a voice was heard from inside the open door.
It was a laughter.
At first it was quiet, but then it grew louder and louder, and the laughter echoed throughout the basement.
Murashige sheathed his sword and roared into the darkness.
“Shut up……, shut up, Ganbee!”
The laughter suddenly stopped.
Murashige picked up a candle and illuminated the area under the stairs.
I slowly walked down the damp stairs.
At the end of the stairs is a dungeon.
The shadow crouching inside the prison shook slightly as Murashige approached.
“Ganbei.”
Murashige called out the name and lit the candle.
His hair and beard were unruly, his clothes were shabby, and he looked like a bundle of rags in prison.
The eyes slowly opened on the dirty face, and the yellow whites and cloudy blacks looked at Murashige.
Kuroda Kanbei twitched his cheek and smiled.
The last time Murashige saw Kanbei was in December of last year.
It was natural that his hair and beard had grown since then, but his laughter was different.
“This is it, Settsunokami-sama.
“It is truly fortunate that you were saved by the Buddha’s protection.”
It was a very cracked voice.
Murashige opened his eyes wide.
“What do you know, you punk?”
--- p.252
Murashige sat cross-legged, looking at the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, and clasped his hands.
And Murashige prayed.
It doesn't matter who it is, whether it's Shakyamuni Buddha, Manjushri Bodhisattva, or Heo Jang-gwang Bodhisattva.
Even if it's not Buddha, even a ghost is fine.
Give me wisdom.
What happened in Arioka Castle, which this body built and which this body guards? Wisdom to see through everything! … … Murashige suddenly wondered why he was so fixated on Noto’s death.
It must have been a job to find the traitor.
But now, as I clung to Buddha, my desperate desire to know the truth seemed to be for another reason.
Could it be that something greater, something that engulfed this castle, was revealed in that single bullet? Ah, what did Ganbei say?
Yes, he said this.
'Sesshu-sama, you probably already know the true nature of the bee.'
That's right.
Kanbe was right.
Murashige already knew, and now he realized that he knew.

Publisher's Review
Achieving 9 crowns, which will never happen again!
In 2021, Honobu Yonezawa's "Black Thunder Castle," a hotly debated work that heated up the Japanese literary world, will be introduced in Korea.
"Black Thunder Castle" is considered a masterpiece that marks the 20th anniversary of Honobu Yonezawa's career as a writer and achieves both the royal road of historical novels and the essence of mystery.
Since its publication, 『Black Thunder Castle』 has won the 12th Yamada Futaro Award, as well as the top spot in all four major Japanese mystery ranking magazines: This Mystery is Amazing!, Honkaku Mystery Top 10, Shukan Bunshun Mystery Top 10, and I Want to Read Mysteries!, and has won the 166th Naoki Award and the 22nd Honkaku Mystery Grand Prize, winning a total of nine awards.
"Black Thunder Castle" is the only work in history to have won the Naoki Prize, the most prestigious award in Japanese popular literature, and the five major mystery categories.
This is a record that surpasses Higashino Keigo's "The Devotion of Suspect X," which is considered the best popular novel in Japan in the 2000s. "Black Thunder Castle" has surpassed the limitations of genre novels and achieved an unprecedented number of awards that no other novel will be able to achieve in the future.
A culmination of Honobu Yonezawa's 20th anniversary
Since his debut in 2001, when he won the Kadokawa Gakuen Novel Award Encouragement Award for “Hyouka,” Honobu Yonezawa has continued to grow.
The simple resolution to "always strive to make the next work a better novel" has been faithfully maintained for 20 years, and the 20th anniversary work of his debut, "Black Thunder Castle," has shown an impressive achievement that can be called a "culmination."
Although "Black Thunder Castle" is Yonezawa Honobu's first full-length historical novel, the author's interest in settings different from the present can be easily found in his previous works.
The data from an incident 33 years ago contained in "Hyouka," the Yugoslav Civil War in "Hello Fairy," the ancient documents from the Warring States period in "Where's the Dog?", the fantasy world of "Broken Dragonbone," and the Nepalese royal family in "The King and the Circus."
Honobu Yonezawa is an author who has been exploring the 'differences' that emerge from various stages using a mystery technique.
That 'difference' could be ethics or values.
『Black Thunder』 also revealed that rather than wanting to write a serious historical novel, he chose the time and space that was best suited to reveal the 'difference' in perspectives on life and death.
After winning first place for "This Mystery is Amazing!" and the 166th Naoki Prize, Honobu Yonezawa expressed her ambition to write a "good novel."
A 'good novel', as he sees it, is a timeless novel that can be read even after the author has disappeared.
At the end of the award interview, he showed humility by saying, "It is very difficult to transcend the times with a mystery," but at least 『Black Thunder Castle』 is undoubtedly a work that has come one step closer to that "good novel."
Reconstructing the story from the riddles of history
『Black Thunder Castle』 is set in 1578, when Oda Nobunaga was on the verge of taking over the Warring States period.
Araki Murashige, a general of Oda Nobunaga who had been greatly promoted after establishing various achievements, suddenly rebelled in October of that year and began resistance at his base, Arioka Castle.
And he imprisoned Kuroda Kanbei, Oda's military advisor who came to persuade him, in the 'Black Thunder Castle', that is, the castle's underground prison.
Why Araki Murashige rebelled against Oda Nobunaga, and why Kuroda Kanbei was imprisoned instead of killed, remain mysteries of history.
『Black Thunder Castle』 is a work that covers one year, divided into winter, spring, summer, fall, and winter, from November 1578 to December of the following year.
Honobu Yonezawa leaves the beginning and end recorded in the historical materials as they are and reconstructs the unrecorded time in between through an impossible crime.
In a time and space where the style, vocabulary, and expressions are faithfully reproduced, there is a sharp contrast between Araki Murashige on top of the castle during the siege and Kuroda Kanbei in the dungeon below the castle.
In some ways, they are clients and armchair detectives, but at the same time, they represent groups and individuals caught up in a war where they must constantly kill and be killed.
The two's ethical views clash fiercely, and the novel heads toward a conclusion recorded in history.
Finally, readers who face the twist that strikes them like a storm may look back on their own lives today, living in turbulent times not so different from the Warring States period.
