Bernard Werber's new novel

Bestselling author Bernard Werber's new novel, "The Planet," has been published in translation by French literature specialist Jeon Mi-yeon.
Released in France in 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic raged across the globe, this work is heavily influenced by it and has a more dystopian character than Berber's previous works.
In his short story "Homo Confinus," published in the spring of the same year, Berber described a new species of human being isolated underground. In "The Planet," he introduces a new species of human being who lives hidden in high-rise buildings without setting foot on the ground.

A world devastated by war, terrorism, and infectious diseases, with the population reduced by one-eighth.
The city, with its system paralyzed, was covered in garbage and rats.
The main character, Bastet, a cat, leaves Paris on the ship "Last Hope" and heads to New York, the New World, in search of a world without rats.
However, what greets Bastet and her party upon arriving in New York is an attack by the rat army led by a leader named Al Capone.
Bastet, who barely managed to survive, sees a twinkling light on top of a tall building, and a drone flying towards her.
Amazingly, in New York, about 40,000 people were hiding in 200 high-rise buildings to escape the rats.
And in the Freedom Tower there is a general assembly representing 102 human groups.
At the general assembly, conflict intensifies as hardliners emerge who advocate using nuclear bombs to eliminate the rats.
Bastet demands to be the 103rd representative, but the humans simply ignore her, saying it is just a cat's opinion.
The ever-approaching threat of the rat army, humans who are ready to launch nuclear bombs without warning, the appearance of the robot cat Katz… Will Bastet be able to overcome the crisis and change the fate of this planet by using her imagination?

Publisher's Review
Who rules the Earth? Humans? Cats? Rats?

"Planet" is a work that can be read independently, but it is a story that originally started from "Cat."
The adventure that began with "Cat" and continued with "Civilization" reaches its grand finale in "Planet."

Berber has portrayed the human world from a new perspective by presenting animals such as ants and cats, and transcendent beings such as gods and angels.
In this trilogy, where humans play supporting roles and animals play the main roles, the author constantly emphasizes that “this world is not only for humans.”

Compared to the two previously published novels, the proportion of humans in 『Planet』 has increased significantly.
A variety of human characters appear, including politicians, soldiers, scientists, and religious figures.
Characters based on real people, such as Hillary Clinton, who leads the assembly of the surviving human race, and Marc Raibert, the founder of the robot factory Boston Dynamics, also add to the fun.

These human characters are sometimes compared to animal characters to show what the problems are in human society today and to make us think about solutions for what should be done in the future.
In particular, the human belligerence represented by the nuclear bomb and the human characters' tendency to resolve conflicts through force rather than communication make us reflect on the present.
Just as "Cat" and "Civilization" are linked to the coronavirus outbreak that occurred after their publication, reading "The Planet" might bring to mind the horrific war currently raging in Ukraine.

Also pay attention to the 『Encyclopedia of Relative and Absolute Knowledge』 included in the book!

If you are a fan of Berber, you will surely know the name of 『Encyclopedia of Relative and Absolute Knowledge』.
An encyclopedia also appears in this work.
Roman Wells, a descendant of Edmond Wells who appeared in 『The Ants』, is said to have created an "expanded edition" by adding data from Encyclopedia Britannica, Wikipedia, etc. to the existing 『Encyclopedia of Relative and Absolute Knowledge』.
Another fun aspect of reading the novel is the expanded edition of the encyclopedia, which focuses on the activities of the Wells family, who have been with Berber's world of works for decades.
