[Book] Civilization 1

[Book] Civilization 2

Human civilization is being pushed to its limits by epidemics, terrorism, and war.
Where is the new civilization that will take its place?

Bestselling author Bernard Werber's new novel, Civilization (2 volumes), has been published by Open Books, translated by Jeon Mi-yeon, a French literature specialist.
The novel is set in a world devastated by terrorism and war, where billions have died from a pandemic.
When this novel was first published in France in 2019, it would have been a common dystopian setting, but for us living in the COVID-19 era, it feels even more vivid.

"Civilization" is a novel about the adventures of Bastet, the cat who was the main character in "Cat," in a world where human civilization has reached the brink of collapse.
The cats' primary goal is to repel the exponentially growing rat hordes and survive in the harsh environment, but their ultimate goal is to build a new civilization to replace human civilization.
The various animals he meets along the way, such as pigs, cows, dogs, and pigeons, sometimes become allies or enemies of the cat.
Will Bastet be able to foster communication and cooperation among different animal species and achieve her goals? This work is also a coming-of-age story about Bastet, a female cat.
She is more charming and lovable than any other protagonist in Berber's works, and has both strengths and weaknesses.
Let's watch together Bastet's bold challenge to establish civilization.

Publisher's Review
A message to humanity contained in a cat's adventure.

『Civilization』 is a work that can be read independently, but it is a story that originally started from 『Cat』.
This story, which encompasses "Cat" and "Civilization," is planned to be a trilogy.
Berber has portrayed the human world from a new perspective by presenting animals such as ants and cats, and transcendent beings such as gods and angels.
In this trilogy, where humans play supporting roles and animals play the main roles, the author constantly emphasizes that “this world is not only for humans.”
First of all, many of the main characters in this work, such as the cat Pythagoras and the rat Timur, are experimental animals that were locked in cages.
In the “Human Trial” staged by pigs, animals suffering for human enjoyment or pleasure take the stand one after another to testify.
Through the animals' mouths, the author conveys, sometimes seriously and sometimes humorously, the awareness that we must overcome anthropocentrism beyond the simple protection of animal rights.

Also pay attention to the 『Encyclopedia of Relative and Absolute Knowledge』 included in the book!

Fans of Berber will not be able to ignore Roman Welles among the characters featured in this work.
He is a descendant of Edmond Wells, who created the Encyclopedia of Relative and Absolute Knowledge, and is a scientist who strives to preserve knowledge in a ruined world.
Characters with the surname Wells have appeared in various works, starting with Edmond Wells in "The Ants" and continuing with Gabriel Wells in "Death."
In the work, Roman Wells appears to have created an "Expanded Edition" by adding data from Encyclopedia Britannica, Wikipedia, and other sources to the existing "Encyclopedia of Relative and Absolute Knowledge."
Another fun aspect of reading the novel is the expanded edition of the encyclopedia, which focuses on the activities of the Wells family, who have been with Berber's world of works for decades.

"This fable, which is about cats but is actually about humans, is a warning bell the author is sounding for us living in the COVID-19 era."
- From the translator's note

A novel full of humor and satire, yet sharply capturing the limitations of humanity.
Biblioteca

A novel about the equality of all life, including humans, biodiversity, the threat of extinction, and the desire for knowledge and freedom.
