Into the book
Even if 800 million yen is just a dream, I would like to easily buy a jewel worth around 8 million yen.
Not barely surviving, but living lightly, like buying one or two vegetables.
I guess that won't work.
Yeah, that won't do, Kyoko realized.
First of all, it is difficult with my own strength.
But if you borrow the strength of others, it is not entirely hopeless.
Okay, let's run hard.
Dreaming of the 22.76 carat, Kyoko took a strong step forward.
I turned left onto Ginza Chuo-dori Street, the hem of my coat fluttering.
In front of it is the Ginza Queen Hotel, where she will be working today.

Since a party invitation is considered a kind of upper-class qualification, the women attending wear Hanaya jewels dangling from all over their bodies.
Then, of course, a fierce competition will ignite among the women.
People are making comments like, 'That unknown actress is wearing an emerald ring?' or 'Huh, a wrinkled middle-aged woman wouldn't shine with a fancy diamond necklace.'
If that happens, it's fine, next time I'll get something a little more expensive, and so on.
In other words, Hanaya's business is getting better and better.
We've earned so much that we're throwing another thank you party to give back.
The structure is such that sparks fly and expensive jewels are sold again.
So, husbands cannot tolerate it.
Even today, the sight of wives estimating the value of other people's jewelry with bloodshot eyes and their husbands looking on with bitterness was seen here and there.
That party venue was the workplace of Bambi Banquet Companions, including Kyoko.

“Then let’s go to my house.
Let's exchange information and eat something delicious.
“Well, it’s just the leftover spaghetti from earlier.” “Oh, are you saying such wonderful things that it almost brings tears to my eyes? Oh, but the information I have isn’t worth as much as the leftover spaghetti, what should I do?” Shibata came over to Kyoko’s studio apartment wearing tracksuits.
While Kyoko was preparing vongole for Shibata, he was looking at the Karajan record jacket that Kyoko had taken out.
“I didn’t expect Kyoko to be a fan of classical music,” he said, as if impressed.
“No, I plan on becoming a fan from now on,” Kyoko replied with a smirk.
“I borrowed that from the record rental store earlier.” “Why did you suddenly decide to become a classical music fan?” “It’s part of Cinderella’s condition.
“The prince I took a picture of likes classical music.”

“Okay, here’s where the problem starts.
"How much poison would Kyoko put in this cup?" "How would I know? I don't know how much to put in to kill someone.
“Shouldn’t you just pour out all the poison you have?” “Okay, I guess you put in the amount that you think will kill you if you eat this much.
And then I put that in, so here's the problem." Shibata took the cup in his hand.
“How should I drink this water? Should I drink it all at once, or should I sip it little by little?” “Of course, I will drink it all at once.
“I think it would be more painful if I drank it little by little.” “Yes, that’s the general thought.”

Shibata put the cup down on the kitchen table.
“This raises a question.
If you look at the psychology of suicidal people, it is common for them to choose a drink that can be consumed in one gulp.
Well then, it's strange that Eri chose beer.
I asked Kyoko last time, but Eri said that she doesn't drink that much, so one glass of beer is the right amount.
In other words, beer was never an easy drink for her.
If you were really going to die, wouldn't you choose water or juice?"

It was after dinner, when the espresso coffee was served, that he brought up the incident again.
“By the way, you were surprised last time, weren’t you? Even then, I was drinking coffee with Kyoko-san like this.” Takami said, looking into the cup of coffee with a reassuring smile.
"That Eri-san seemed to have some concerns, didn't she? Did she ever tell Kyoko about it?" "No, not at all." "I see.
“Have you known Ms. Eri for a long time?” “About three months.
“Eri was a member of Royal Banquet before,” Kyoko added, adding that she quit because there were too many restrictions and that she was from Nagoya.
“Nagoya? As expected…….” Kyoko looked at his face at the words he hinted at.
“As expected, Ranyo?”

Publisher's Review
A murder case in a locked hotel room that occurred on the night of a luxurious party.
And the hidden message of the anonymous artist who committed suicide!
The delightful detective chemistry of solving two tricks

On Tokyo's Ginza street, lined with luxury shops, Kyoko gazes at the dazzlingly shining jewelry store windows as if entranced.
All Kyoko can do for that beautiful jewel is to come up with a 'plan' and run towards it with all her might.
The fact that I became a companion (a job that guides and serves customers at parties and events) was part of that grand plan.

One day, after a customer appreciation party at Hanaya Jewelry Shop, her coworker Eri is found dead in a secret hotel room.
The police suspect that it was a suicide due to a love triangle, but Kyoko cannot believe it.
As detective Shibata, who was in charge, was suspicious of Eri's death and was about to go to her hometown of Nagoya to investigate, Kyoko took advantage of their "next-door" relationship and accompanied him to investigate her whereabouts.
They discover something surprising here.
Eri's former lover, an anonymous painter, committed murder and then committed suicide! What happened to Ise and Eri? And soon, another incident unfolds for Kyoko...

"She Has a Plan" is a mystery novel about the female protagonist Kyoko, who "wants to buy an 8 million yen jewel as easily as buying a vegetable or two," and Shibata, the detective next door who stubbornly investigates the case no matter what others say. The two bicker as they deduce the whole story of a murder case.
The past events discovered while tracking the victim's movements and the future events that unfold thereafter intertwine, creating a delightful investigative chemistry that unravels a chain of tricks.

A fantasy of money and desire set against the backdrop of a bubble economy driven by soaring real estate prices and a stock market boom.
Keigo Higashino's early experiments in lightening heaviness

The late 1980s, the setting of the novel, was when Japan's bubble economy was at its peak.
The real estate bubble of the time transcended national borders, and the purchase of Rockefeller Center in the United States for approximately 200 billion yen in 1989 remains a symbol of overseas real estate purchases by Japanese companies and is still talked about to this day.
It was also during that time that the gap between big cities and small towns, and between the rich and the poor, widened uncontrollably.
Perhaps, when 'people without anything' are in a situation where they can neither move nor run, they try to find an escape from their desires by making grand plans.

Keigo Higashino tried to portray the heavy subject of money and desire with a humorous and light touch.
This work is his first serialized novel, and due to the nature of serialization, it inevitably has an entertainment nature.
Digging into the background reveals a dark and weighty theme of serious socio-economic injustice, but the story stands out for its experimentation in developing a comically engaging narrative.
This book is the first to introduce the author's early novels in Korea, allowing readers to enjoy the pleasure of witnessing the growth of this accomplished author.

Kyoko, the female protagonist based on Audrey Hepburn from the movie [Breakfast at Tiffany's]
Immersive storytelling born from the 80s era

In the official guide published to commemorate the 25th anniversary, Keigo Higashino revealed that he wrote this work with the Audrey Hepburn film [Breakfast at Tiffany's] in mind, which he was obsessed with at the time.
In fact, throughout the story, you can easily find scenes reminiscent of the movie, and the image of Audrey Hepburn in the movie, who longed to become a member of high society but never lost her liveliness and dignity, overlaps several times with the book's protagonist, Kyoko.

Another interesting thing is that props from the 80s, such as landlines, keys, and cassette tapes, and scenes from that era are placed throughout the story, bringing back memories of that era that has now disappeared.
You can feel the emotions of the 'Eungpal' era, such as the scene where the phone line is not connected yet on moving day and you have to go to the next door neighbor to borrow a phone, the victim guessing the address of the workplace he used to work at by looking at the printed information on a bookshelf that was carelessly placed, and the 'missed message' playing when he returns from going out.

Perhaps another charm of this book is that the author's "latest work," which he painstakingly worked on during his rookie days, has now come back as a rich and immersive retro storytelling.
As readers reminisce about the past and explore the technological limitations of that era, as well as the richness it brought, another retro mystery will undoubtedly emerge in their minds.
