A word from MD
Twenty-Four Poems and Words That Became Poems
The world is an infinite collection of words, and how we choose among them determines our own world.
In 『Beginning Dictionary』, poets define words in their own way.
With it, we can glimpse the poet's world, take out our words again and touch them, write our own poetry, or draw our lives anew.
December 11, 2020. Novel/Poetry PD Park Hyung-wook
What word does your poem begin with?
A dictionary of beginning poets writing poetry

Each one vividly ripples with its own color and temperature.
New Poems by Twenty-Four New Poets, and Words That Became Poetry

The poetry series 'Beginning Dictionary', which was introduced on the 〔Literature 3〕 website in 2019, has been published as a single volume.
This is a project in which twenty-four new poets who had not yet published their first poetry collection at the time of serialization selected a keyword from each of their two new poems and redefined that word through their own fresh perspective.
This book has a unique concept, as it allows readers to read the poems by focusing on the words in the series, regrouping them into a single 'dictionary', and adding other reading material such as a 'word search' and a new format of 'author introduction'.
As it is a collection of poets who have just begun their careers, it is filled with the freshest individuality, and the words and definitions included shine with the charm of approaching like another poem, opening up a world hidden in everyday life.
“This dictionary is possible only because it is seen through the eyes of poetry” (Preface, Hee-yeon Ahn) and “we will be able to start anything anew” (Recommendation, In-chan Hwang).

Into the book
memory (memory) [memory] noun
The marble and its variations created by anxiety and regret.
---From "Jeong Eun-young, Memory"

Like the tip of a knife
Like a glaring gaze
As if he was going to erase anything
The secrets crumpled inside the sealed body
It's gone, but you can't say it's gone
It remains, but it is difficult to say that it remains
Wrong question is wrong again
The children also today
Do your best to please yourself
---From "Nam Ji-eun, Scar"

We walk in front of a small bookstore.
When I saw the title God of Small Things, I really wanted to become small.
Enough to have at least one god

Did you see her feet earlier? Did you see her fingers? Did you see how small they were?
As you speak, a very small, black dog passes by.

Since we've come this far, let's make a wish and go.
We place stones smaller than the smallest stones on the stone tower.
---From "Kim Ji-yeon, Dual Horizon"

star 〔starː〕 noun
What people who look at the sky at night are trying to find.
A star that emits its own light.
However, when viewed from a distance, it is difficult to tell whether something is shining on its own or reflecting the light of a star. We usually refer to almost everything that shines in the sky as a star.
---From "Seong Da-young, Star"

In the place where I woke up
There is a mark left where I lay down
Transparent

These words won't leave my mouth
This is uselessly long-lived

The things I loved
Floating inside it
As if I were dead

I will probably last a long time
---From "Han Jae-beom, The Sea Partes"

Obituary (訃告) [Buːgo] noun
No news arrived.
Can we say that nothing happened?
Spring night.
I think of cats I don't know, flowers, clouds, the pine tree in my backyard, the children who will be loved there forever...
A quiet spring night.
Different
It's true.
It's completely different.
---From "Choi Ji-eun, Obituary"

When is it right to open your eyes?

Seeing people with their eyes closed gave me conviction. Those who muttered seemed to be burying their hearts in their hands. Like someone slowly and steadily approaching death, I couldn't eat without thinking of the tree.
---From "Jeong Jae-yool, Family Worship"

Where did all the feet go?
Previously
A person who has walked the space before
A person who walks around with a dog and a cat

Put your backs together and imagine something good
Like a picture hanging on the wall

A hot heart, really something like that, put it in the window
Welcome, welcome

A morning that changed with all my heart
When growing spaces come together, they can become a home.
---From "Kim Ki-hyung, I've Disappeared"

Sportswear (physical education uniform) [sportswear] noun
Some people still dream of loitering at the back of the classroom to borrow gym clothes.
I had a dream where I heard the bell ringing to signal the start of class, but I still couldn't borrow a gym uniform.
---From "Yoon Da-hye, Gym Uniform"

Today, you are lying dead next to me
The dark sleep is suspicious
We always sleep at night
How do you know what happened last night?
When I woke up
The voice that told me I was still alive
Who could it be?
---From "Jo On-yoon, Mafia of the Night"

Most of the words redefined by poets are ones we are familiar with.
There are objects like 'notebook', 'fireplace', and 'globe', animals like 'cat' and 'rat', and abstract words like 'memory', 'prophecy', and 'future' that bring about a sense of dizziness just by pronouncing them.
These are words that are nothing new, but the moment they are captured by the eyes of poets and redefined in a single sentence, they appear before us in a completely different form.
'Alley' is "a door you can enter but not come out of.
“A door that opens but cannot be closed”, and therefore “life” (Joo Min-hyeon), the window is something that “often takes me to strange places and I get lost” (Noh Guk-hee), the ‘shadow’ is “things that hide behind my back when I go to noisy and bright places” (Jo On-yoon), and ‘ice’ is the time when “her struggle to not fall into the ice or not to become ice” (Lee Da-hee) takes place.
The feeling of “somehow feeling like I’ve been thinking about this for a long time” (recommendation) while the concepts I knew become infinitely unfamiliar is a special experience that can be had while reading “The Beginning Dictionary.”

How to Reread the Beginning Dictionary
24 Artists, 24 Colors: "Author Introduction" and "Search"

The addition of new reading material, which was added by publishing the serialized work as a single volume, also attracts attention.
First, the participating poets introduce themselves with a sentence ending with 'started'.
Instead of the year of debut and the page, I freely wrote about the reason, time, and state of writing poetry.
Even in a single line of introduction, each poet's individuality is revealed: a poet (Jeong Da-yeon) who opened her lips and started talking about love, a poet (Han Jae-beom) who somehow came to love only opaque things, a poet (Seong Da-yeong) who recently started YouTube, a poet (Yoo I-woo) who starts each day by listening to music, etc.
Additionally, the book includes forty-four poems and a word 'index' that covers the entire meaning of each word, giving it the function of a dictionary.
What words do twenty-four poets who have just begun their careers have in common? How are words that are not commonly found in their poetry used? How are the same words used differently by each poet? One way to enjoy 『Dictionary for Beginners』 before closing the book is to select interesting words from the 'Index' and return to the main text.

When you want to read this world again
The only book that could be better than this

We open a dictionary when we want to know the meaning of a word, what others say, or even the world around us a little more accurately.
However, rather than providing clear answers, this book is a dictionary that “brings us back to the starting line and makes us start over again,” and in doing so, it makes us question again who the “accuracy” we want to confirm is for and for whom, a dictionary that makes us break away from the familiar and definite world and jump into a world of infinite openness and whirlpool.
How far can we go with this book? Even now, the poets of "Beginning Dictionary" are "relentlessly drawing the world they perceive from their own perspectives."
“All we have to do is sit down in a sunny chair and open this dictionary.” (Introduction)

Poet's words

Kang Ji-i | I started writing poetry because I wanted to express, even just a little, something about the winter air, the silence of space, the light that comes and goes, and the leaves flying into the sky when I raise my head.

Kim Ki-hyung | I started this walk because it was the path to becoming a bird.

Kim Ji-yeon | When I imagine a world that gently recedes like fruit, the words that have been on paper for too long begin to crumble and crumble, becoming themselves again.

Nam Ji-eun | At the age of ten, Na-yoon, Yu-min, Seo-young, and Tae-yeon began writing poetry.

Noh Gook-hee | My stopped heart broke and started humming.

Ryu Jin | This Goldberg device later started greeting people and scratching their backs.

Park Seung-yeol | I started without any faith, just for fun.

Seong Da-young | Poet Seong Da-young recently started a YouTube channel.

Sim Min-ah | Started living.

Yuiwoo | I always started my day by listening to music.

Yoon Da-hye | The things I stole and forgot about are starting to sprout.

Dahee Lee | While reading the poem, I began to like myself.

Lee Young-jae | I had no choice, so I started walking slowly again.

Lee Jeong-hoon | A giant man with only one arm and one leg began to write down the story he had been telling with his half-tongue.

Jeon Ho-seok | I, a fake, started believing only in things that weren't me.

Jeong Da-yeon | I opened my lips and started to speak of love.

Jeong Eun-young | I started photosynthesis today by lying down in the gap between the lines, untouched by anyone's eyes.

Jeong Jae-yool | As I was looking at the toothbrushes my friends left behind, I started to get confused as to who left them.

Jo On-yoon | I began writing poetry by finding common ground in 'common grounds.'

Joo Min-hyeon | In a museum with the lights on at night, I began to look into the human heart drawn by humans.

Ji-eun Choi | From then on, all my love began to return, come closer, and still remain by my side, sitting around me.

Han Yeon-hee | A strange and mysterious poetic name began to emerge for the nameless monster.

Han Jae-beom | Somehow I started to love only opaque things.

Hong Ji-ho | Suddenly, in the crowd, everything started to feel regretful.
