"Dear readers, this book was inspired by the questions you have been asking me about Gilead and its inner workings.
Well, it's almost all thanks to your questions! Another inspiration is the world we live in." - Margaret Atwood

All the answers to the questions readers have about The Handmaid's Tale are here.

While "The Handmaid's Tale" centers around the "handmaid" Offred and the events that unfold around her, "The Testimonies" tells the story of Gilead in general through the recordings and memoirs of three different women.
In particular, in the previous work, the infamous educator and iron lady, Lydia 'Auntie', is one of the witnesses, and through her memoirs, she reveals the true face of the corrupt power holders of Gilead, and describes in detail the process of how the 'Auntie' class came to be, as well as the conflicts and plots among them.
Another witness is Daisy, a Canadian girl whose life was shaken to its core by Gilead's clutches, and the recordings detail the situation outside Gilead.

The film depicts student protests against the Gilead regime, but the Canadian government is unable to raise its voice despite public opposition due to Gilead's strong military power, secretly trying to root out anti-Gilead groups in Canada or attempting assassinations and terrorism, and on the other hand, Gilead sending out a missionary group called the "Pearl Girls" to recruit civilians abroad.
The green girl on the cover of 'Testimonies' symbolizes 'Agnes', another witness.
The green dress contrasts with the red-dressed 'maid', which is the attire of a girl about to get married. Agnes is raised as the commander's adopted daughter, but is eventually sold and put in danger of having to marry another commander.
In addition, the story of the life and death of the main character, Offred, and her stolen daughter, which aroused the greatest curiosity of readers in the previous work, are also naturally incorporated into 『Testimonies』.

"Testimonies" Wins the 2019 Booker Prize

Margaret Atwood won the Booker Prize, 19 years after The Blind Assassin in 2000.
Margaret Atwood, the oldest ever Booker Prize winner, said of the unusual joint win, “I would have been very embarrassed if I had won the prize so late in my career at my age.
“If that were the case, it would have held back the careers of younger writers and prevented them from passing this gate,” he said humbly.
Jury chairman Peter Florence said of the winning entry, "It is a work of outstanding literary skill.
It is a sentence with elegant language and excellent structure.
These techniques contribute to the creation of a great work, regardless of whether the writer's intended message is truly valuable or not.
It's a gripping thriller that not only has the message to speak for itself, but is also surprisingly easy to read.
This work is a story about today's world.
"It gives us insight into the world we live in and creates characters that resonate with us," the judges said in their review.

The Booker Prize was established in 1969 and is currently considered one of the world's top three literary awards, along with the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Prix Goncourt. It was called the Booker McConnell Prize from 1969, but its name was changed to the Man Booker Prize in 2002 when the investment company Man Group became the sponsor, and the name was changed again to the Booker Prize in 2019.
In 2019, the Booker Prize organizers decided to award the prize jointly to Margaret Atwood's 'Testimonies' and Bernardine Evaristo's 'Girl, Woman, Other', for the first time in 17 years.

*What is the Gilead government in "The Handmaid's Tale" and "The Testimonies"?
A regime that rules over a significant portion of the United States (including the Republic of Texas, which is at war with the Gilead regime in the story) that takes away the rights of all women and turns any women who act against their doctrine into "handmaids" who serve as surrogate mothers for those in power.
Additionally, women who still refuse to obey the regime's orders despite being 'handmaids' are sent to extreme labor facilities called 'colonies' or to secret pleasure clubs called 'Jezebel's House'.
They are monitoring society with secret police called 'eyes' and are implementing policies to discourage the people, such as replacing signs with pictures to make them illegible.
Due to environmental pollution caused by war and other factors, the birth rate of deformed babies is high, so the birth of a normal baby is considered a blessing.
