Book Introduction
“For that person, I risked everything.”
Teru Miyamoto, a master of Japanese lyric literature
A hot new work following 『Light of Fantasy』 and 『Beast』, which have sold over 2.3 million copies!

A new work by Teru Miyamoto, a writer considered a master of Japanese pure literature, has been published.
Teru Miyamoto is considered a writer who demonstrates the essence of Japanese lyricism with his beautiful and elegant writing style.
The masterpieces he created are also diverse.
His debut work "Muddy River" and his second work "Firefly River", which won the Osamu Dazai Award and the Akutagawa Award respectively, solidified Teru Miyamoto's presence as an author, and "Firefly River" was even included in Japanese high school textbooks.
Miyamoto's literature reached its peak with "The Light of Illusion" and "Beasts."
Hirokazu Koreeda's internationally acclaimed film "The Light of Illusion" is based on Teru Miyamoto's novel of the same name. The novel depicts the pain of loss with greater sophistication, and has been praised as a masterpiece that surpasses the film.
In addition, the epistolary literature 『Geumsu』, which was inspired by this, also left a strong impression on readers.
These two works are still loved even after nearly 40 years since their publication.

Japan's Mainichi Shimbun and Sankei Shimbun highly praise it!
A recent work that demonstrates the vitality of Miyamoto's literature, which speaks of life, death, and happiness.

“There are feelings that can be conveyed even without speaking out loud.
“Sometimes believing in what we cannot see gives us hope.”
- From an interview with the author in the Sankei Shimbun

The new work, “The Quiet Oath of the Wildflowers,” is the first full-length novel by Teru Miyamoto to be introduced in Korea since these two works.
This work, which was serialized to rave reviews in a local Japanese newspaper and then published as a book, tells the story of a man who inherits a huge fortune from his deceased aunt and comes face to face with a hidden secret.
Like the author's other works that depict the lives of those left behind after the death of a loved one, this novel also depicts the complexities of the human mind and the meaning of life that are difficult to explain in a single word.
However, an element of mystery was added to make it a new work.
Like his previous works, you can feel the beauty and lyricism in the flowing sentences without any unnecessary embellishment, and the journey that follows the mystery within the work provides a deep thrill along with the mysterious truth of life.

Into the book
He thought it might be the sound of the branches and leaves of the trees swaying in the wind blowing from the sea, but what reached Genya's ears was something softer, like a whisper, the words of a living being with a heart.
The fear that had been quietly continuing inside Genya for a while now disappeared.

Genya walked through the courtyard and looked at the flowers,
“It’s pretty.
“It’s really pretty.”
And said.
It was a beauty that I couldn't help but say.

--- p.62

Genya decided to look for Leila Yoko Alcott just one more time.
It might be a waste of money and effort, but let's trust Aunt Kiku's confidence.
It's a mother's feeling that Leila is alive.
I trust human intuition more than scientific analysis or theoretical data.
Genya thought like this.

--- p.106

Genya rose from his chair, caressing his wet bottom with his palm, and touched the petals of a deep orange gerbera.
I also gently touched the swollen part near the stem of the bellflower.
He kept talking to me, saying, "It's pretty, it's beautiful," while touching me.
It was a secret ritual Genya learned from his grandmother when he was very young.
- They say that flowers, grass, and trees all have hearts.
If it sounds like a lie, try talking to me sincerely.
Plants want to be praised.
So, I praise you with all my heart.
Then I will definitely respond.

--- p.158

The long awning on the north wing protected the gerberas from the strong afternoon sunlight.
Leila is also thirty-three years old.
There are also thirty-three potted gerberas.
Genya was convinced in his heart that this was neither forced nor coincidental.

--- p.273

At the very end of the letter, as a postscript, it said, "Leila will die on April 5th, and I will live as a tombstone on Leila's grave."
I only understood what it meant after hearing Genya's story a little while ago.

--- p.377

Kyoko was looking at the awning of the building from which the sound of sleeping birds could be heard.
Kevin sat silently in the heavy metal chair, his gaze uncertain whether he was looking at the railing of the balcony in front of him or the moon hanging over the Pacific Ocean.

Publisher's Review
The man who inherited a huge fortune and the girl who disappeared

Genya moves to the United States after the sudden death of his aunt Kikue, who lived alone in Los Angeles, and there he hears a surprising story from a lawyer.
That she left herself an inheritance worth over 40 billion won.
However, the last sentence in his aunt's will shocks Genya even more.
It turned out that her daughter, who was believed to have died of leukemia at the age of six, had actually been kidnapped and disappeared.
Genya decides to hire a private detective to track down the truth.

In the mansion where Kikue lived alone, Genya discovers small clues.
A mysterious letter hidden in a secret box, a password for a laptop, countless flower pots hanging from a window, etc.
Based on cleverly hidden clues, as if he wanted someone to know, he begins to retrace the life of his aunt, who died hiding a tragic secret.

A life choice to protect what is precious
About that lonely but noble life and hope

The story is set in the Palos Verdes Peninsula in California, USA, where the wealthy live together.
The Kikue mansion where Genya stays is filled with dozens of flowers and large trees, and the blue sea spreads out right in front of the expansive garden.
In this beautiful land where it seems as if nothing happens, someone has endured a tragic life.
Their stories, which may seem cruel, are nonetheless heartwarming.
Because it contains the hearts of those who made choices that would shake up their own fate in order to protect something, and the hearts of good people who pray for them.
Wildflowers are the carriers of this earnest desire.
The mother grows flowers while thinking of her daughter, and the protagonist looks at the flowers and wishes for the girl's well-being.

The long awning on the north wing protected the gerberas from the strong afternoon sunlight.

Leila is also thirty-three years old.
There are also thirty-three potted gerberas.

Genya was convinced in his heart that this was neither forced nor coincidental.

_From the text

In his works, Teru Miyamoto depicts the quiet and lonely landscape of imperfect human life with a hazy brush.
Just as Kikue's life, which seems perfect to some, is marred by dark circumstances, human life can also face inexplicable fates that seem like a trick of the gods.
This is similar to the message about life, death, and happiness that the author has continuously dealt with.
As Kikue said, it doesn't really matter whether the flowers really have feelings for each other.
What we need to know is that when we suddenly encounter an unforeseen misfortune in life, there may be hope somewhere, even if it is invisible.
