Description
Book Introduction
She wanted to be loved by her husband and recognized by her neighbors.
From now on, I've decided to live as 'Brit Marie'!

She has been cleaning every nook and cranny of her house with sodium percarbonate for 40 years without ever leaving her neighborhood.
She hasn't changed anything since she got married.
It seemed like the best course of action would be to wait until my husband got home from work.
My husband said, “Women don’t even know how to assemble Ikea furniture.”
In the end, all she had left were a breezy balcony and a husband who would occasionally acknowledge her hard work.
It's not like there were no expectations from the beginning.
One morning, she woke up to find that her expectations had expired. Even though she was used to living in someone else's shadow, she couldn't live under the same roof with her husband once she discovered he had an affair.
She drives a white car and goes on her first ever 'trip'.
And there, Britt-Marie plans to assemble IKEA furniture herself.

Fredrik Backman, author of A Man Called Ove,
Bringing in Britt-Marie, a super-strong character who surpasses Ove!

Fredrik Backman, author of A Man Called Ove, has published his new novel, Britt-Marie Here, by Dasan Books.
Britt-Marie, the protagonist of "Brit-Marie Is Here," is a person with a natural obsessive-compulsive disorder who is extremely picky and always overly honest.
So, she is misunderstood by her neighbors and her husband as being 'passive-aggressive' and 'lacking social skills'.
But he is also the person whose heart wall, which seems to be stronger than anyone else's, crumbles the most without any countermeasures.
This novel contains a heartwarming journey of a woman who has always lived in someone else's shadow, but who sets out to find her true self after experiencing a life crisis.

In his previous work, A Man Called Ove, Fredrik Backman humorously portrayed reconciliation between neighbors and society through the 59-year-old man Ove, and in My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry, he resolved old family conflicts and brought about reconciliation through the eyes of the seven-year-old girl Elsa. In Britt-Marie Here, he warmly and purely portrays the heartwarming moment of a second chance in life that comes to those who have always lived for others through the eyes of the 63-year-old woman Britt-Marie.

Into the book
She eats a cold dinner at exactly 6 o'clock.
I'm tired of sitting all night waiting for Kent, so I'm going to put his share in the fridge.
But the refrigerator here is full of small bottles of liquor.
She sits on a bed that isn't hers and rubs her fourth finger.
It's a habit that appears when you're anxious.
A few days ago, I cleaned my mattress especially thoroughly with sodium percarbonate, then sat on the bed and turned my wedding ring.
But now I'm rubbing the white mark left where the ring was.
This building has an address, but it's not where she lives or her home.
There are two rectangular plastic boxes containing balcony flower pots on the floor, but the hotel rooms do not have balconies.
Britt-Marie has no one to sit and wait for all night.
Still she sits.
--- p.22~23

The flower pot may appear to be filled with nothing but soil, but underneath it are flowers waiting for spring.
In winter, you must water things that seem to have nothing, believing that there is potential.
Britt-Marie no longer knows whether she believes in that belief or whether she simply wishes it were so.
Maybe there is neither.
--- p.69~70

All passion is childish.
It's cliché and pure.
It overwhelms us because it is instinctive rather than something we acquire later in life.
It turns us upside down.
It sweeps us away.
All other emotions are of this earth, but passion resides in the universe.

That's why passion is meaningful.
The question is not what it gives us, but what it demands of us.
Dignity as a human being.
The bewildered expressions on people's faces and their reaction of shaking their heads in a show-off manner.

Britt-Marie screams when Ben scores a goal.
Her soles lift off the sports center floor.
Not many people enjoy such blessings in January.
There are not many people in this universe who enjoy such blessings.
That alone makes you love soccer.
--- p.383~384

Any human being can close their eyes and recall all the decisions they have made in their life.
And you can realize that it was all a decision for others.
--- p.468~469

Morning comes to Borg, but the sun waits respectfully on the horizon, restrained, as if to give her one last chance to choose, to choose her path for the first time in her life.
As the sunlight finally pours down onto the roof, a white car with blue doors begins to move.
Maybe she will stop.
Maybe I'll knock on another door.
Or maybe I'll just run.
As you know, Britt-Marie doesn't have enough fuel.
--- p.470~471

In fact, if you look closely, there was no one in Backman's work who was grumpy for no reason.
The reason Ove was so prickly was because he missed his deceased wife, the reason Elsa was so prickly was because she was lonely, and the reason Britt-Marie was so prickly was because she wanted to be acknowledged.
Perhaps Backman wanted to give a microphone to those on the margins of this world who had been kept silent and without a voice because they were too old, too young, or too unusual.
Perhaps he wanted to represent people who struggle with communicating with the world and suffer from all kinds of misunderstandings.

“Do you know why I work here in this garbage dump, Britt-Marie?”
“What is it?”
“My mother worked in social welfare all her life.
He used to say, almost like a mantra, that in the middle of all that garbage, where it was piled thickest, brilliant stories were born.
“So it all makes sense,” she says with a smile.
“Ms. Britt-Marie is my dazzling story.” _Page 405

“I laughed out loud the whole time I was reading it, and I cried at the end.”
A relatable novel that captivated the world!

Fredrik Backman's debut was truly dramatic.
He was not a famous writer before the publication of A Man Called Ove, and was merely a columnist in the small country of Sweden.
At the suggestion of visitors to publish the story he had been serializing on his blog as a novel, “A Man Called Ove” was published as a book, and foreign media reported that it was “the most attractive debut ever,” making him an overnight global star.
The Swedish columnist's first novel was published in 40 countries around the world, selling over 2.8 million copies. It also became a steady seller in Korea, ranking first in novel sales in 2015.
In 2016, it also created a sensation in the United States, ranking on the New York Times bestseller list for 45 weeks and reaching number one overall.
Readers sympathized with Backman's work, saying, "I laughed out loud while reading and cried at the end of the novel."

It's the most attractive debut.
You will laugh, cry, and empathize.
And right now, you'll want to go to Scandinavia, where everything is cute.
_『people』
It's warm and fun.
It's unbearably touching there.
_『Daily Mail』
I laughed out loud while reading, but I ended up crying at the end of the novel.
_Amazon Reader Jules

There was a reason why Backman's work quietly created a sensation and gained worldwide popularity.
This is because the warm emotions, humor, and power of the character 'Ove' evoked empathy in the readers.
If there was a 59-year-old man named Ove in A Man Called Ove, there is a seven-year-old girl named Elsa in Grandma Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry.
And in 'Brit Marie is Here', a 63-year-old woman named 'Brit Marie' appears, who appears to be more prickly than anyone else on the outside, but is actually kinder than anyone else on the inside.
Every time he presents a character with a compelling and relatable story, anticipation grows to see what kind of character will appear in Fredrik Backman's next novel.

Where there is always a mess
I have Britt Marie!

fork.
knife.
spoon.
In that order.
Britt-Marie is not the type of person to judge others.
Absolutely not.
But a cultured person would never imagine organizing cutlery drawers in an odd order that doesn't fit the cutlery drawer.
Aren't we animals?
_Page 11 of the text

Britt-Marie from "Britt-Marie Here" is a character who considers a messy sink drawer an unforgivable sin, believes that unless you're mentally ill, you should wake up at 6 a.m., and can't stand anything that isn't precise and neat.
One day, she found out about her husband's affair. How could she sleep under the same roof and blanket with such a man?
So, the piece begins with her packing her bags and leaving the house.

Although I left the house in a fit of anger, I was in a very awkward situation because I had taken the path without any plan.
She decides that she must first get a job anywhere and earn money, and in her own unique way, she 'tricks' a female employee at a re-employment center and succeeds in getting a job as a manager at a recreation center in a local town called Borg.
Borg is an area whose only advantage is the road leading there, and the recreation center is a building slated for demolition.
Upon arrival, she first encounters Borg when he is knocked unconscious after being hit in the head by a soccer ball that flew from somewhere.

When I came to, I found the recreation center covered in mud and a rat living there as my roommate.
The neighborhood kids are kicking a soccer ball around aimlessly, and the owner of the only pizza place in town (also post office, auto repair shop, etc.) promises to fix your car, only to paint the door the wrong color.
Even with all these daily events, Britt-Marie continues to do her job.
Keep the janitor's office sparkling clean, prepare meals for the rats you live with, and wash those stained soccer jerseys.
The only thing that's changed is that I have a friend and I'm now in the rather dubious role of coach of a soccer team.
But surprisingly, this completely changes both Britt-Marie and Borg.

One day, a second chance in life rolled in like a soccer ball.
A story for all of us who need the courage to rise up in life!

Britt-Marie is a woman who has lived her entire life for someone.
She lived harder than anyone else, but because she was always hidden by someone, no one knew she was there.
As she begins to have a 'role', the principles she has held onto with all her heart begin to crumble one by one.
The hope and love that seeped into the place where the walls of the heart had collapsed brought breath back to the ruined Borg.

“We have to be here.
"Because we scored while we were here! We brought good luck here!" the child shouts, his logic absurd.
Britt-Marie stares at the child as if to ask if that makes sense.
But the two of them stand in the parking lot again as the rain falls, and Britt-Marie says nothing more.
Because it's the first time in decades that I've heard that I need to be somewhere.
In that respect, soccer is a strange sport.
In that I'm not asking you to like me.

Backman's new novel, Britt-Marie Here, will have you laughing with its quirky and witty humor, then leave a lasting impression on your heart with its thoughtful sentences that follow as if thrown out.
The heartwarming story of a woman who mustered up the courage for the first time in her life and received genuine support offers a delightful guide to a new life for all of us who have faded from the shadows.

Praise poured in for this book

Backman's latest novel, Britt-Marie Is Here, is a captivating tale of a second chance in a deprived area and the discovery of new love.
All we have to do is pack our bags and head to Sweden.
_The Huffington Post

Britt-Marie may seem stubborn and spiteful at first, making her difficult to tolerate.
But as readers watch Britt-Marie open up to the world, they'll quickly fall in love with her gritty, yet often overly honest, side.
The heartfelt emotion lingers long after you've read the last page.
_RT Magazine

Backman's world-captivating successes are sometimes overly sweet, sometimes downright realistic, and they beautifully straddle the line between the two.
