Mr. Mercedes
Mr. Mercedes
Description
Book Introduction
Stephen King, a bestselling author with over 300 million copies sold worldwide and the original author of dozens of Hollywood films including "The Shawshank Redemption," "Misery," and "The Shining," has published his first detective novel, "Mr. Mercedes," by Golden Bough.
Although I have written a variety of genres, including horror novels, fantasy, and science fiction, this is my first full-fledged mystery novel with a detective as the main character.
As soon as it was published, "Mr. Mercedes" received rave reviews from critics and reached number one on major bestseller lists, including the New York Times, gaining explosive popularity.
In particular, it garnered much attention by winning the Edgar Award (Edgar Allan Poe Award), a representative mystery novel award previously awarded only to legendary mystery writers from the English-speaking world, such as Raymond Chandler, Dennis Lehane, Lawrence Block, and Dick Francis.
Not only that, it has also been nominated for the CWA (Crime Writers of Britain) Award, which is scheduled to be announced in the second half of this year, making Mr. Mercedes a work that solidifies Stephen King's position as a mystery novelist.

Inspired by two events that occurred in 2013, the McDonald's van attack and the Boston Marathon bombing, "Mr. Mercedes" depicts the chase between a serial killer and a retired detective, using Stephen King's signature detailed psychological descriptions and well-structured plot.
The so-called 'Mr. Mercedes', who drove a stolen Mercedes into a crowd of people waiting for a job fair to open, killing eight people, including a baby, before fleeing.
Detective Hodges, who is still in charge of the case, retires.
He was a police officer with a reputation that earned him several medals, but now he is divorced from his wife and spends his days listlessly relying on TV shows.
A letter flew to him like that.
It was a letter from 'Mr. Mercedes'.
The culprit's letter, filled with all sorts of ridicule and smile marks, actually gives Hodges a chance to take on the case again.
After meticulously analyzing the criminal's tone and psychology in the letter and confirming the progress of the case with a former colleague at the scene, Hodges begins to investigate the 'Mr. Mercedes' case from the beginning again.
Stephen King's unique and captivating narrative style has been praised by mystery novel readers to the point that it is said to be a perfect match for mystery novels, and it is currently being adapted into a drama.
The sequel, "Finder's Keepers," was recently published and is now a bestseller alongside "Mr. Mercedes."
Stephen King has announced that he is preparing a trilogy of novels featuring detective Hodges.

Author's Note

Into the book
"It's been a while since I've thought like a detective, and it's been even longer since I've done this kind of unique forensic investigation that doesn't require investigative cameras, microscopes, or special chemicals, but once I jump in, I feel relaxed right away.
He begins writing down the title of each item one by one.
A paragraph with one sentence.
A phrase written in capital letters.
A phrase in quotation marks.
A fancy phrase. A peculiar word.
exclamation mark."

"It's a vague inference, but the flowery rhetoric and fancy phrases are evidence.
There is a phrase that says, 'It would be right to congratulate you first.'
There are also phrases like, 'Hundreds of incidents.'
'And did I come to mind?' This phrase was used twice.
Hodges remembers what they call it, having consistently gotten As in English class in high school and Bs in college.
It's called incremental repetition."

"Besides, he's a cunning guy.
This letter is full of fake fingerprints.
Lead shoes, capitalized phrases like "Words of Concern," phrases with quotation marks, overused exclamation points, and concise yet effective one-sentence paragraphs are all fake fingerprints.
If he had been asked to write a writing sample, Mr. Mercedes would never have resorted to such tricks."

Stephen King has announced that he is preparing a trilogy of novels featuring detective Hodges.

"In the first half of the novel, Stephen King gently stimulates our anxiety through the classic 'cat and mouse' game between a detective and a killer.
But as you read the book, you can feel that Stephen King is struggling to break away from the hard-boiled tradition.
"Because it's not long before the story begins to use all sorts of means, big and small, to reject the old devices of the hard-boiled genre and replace them with other tricks." - From the New York Times Book Review

A new mystery novel that borrows the format of a classic mystery novel but breaks away from convention.

"Mr. Mercedes" seems to follow the format of a classic mystery novel, solving the case with a single letter sent by the criminal as a clue and using detailed descriptions and inferences.
In particular, it seems to have inherited the format of a hard-boiled detective novel by directly referencing Raymond Chandler's 'Philip Marlowe', but in reality, Stephen King is presenting his own detective novel.
In particular, revealing the culprit early on and looking into the culprit's dark family history and complex psychology, thereby making the reader focus more on the psychological game with the detective, can be seen as a Stephen King specialty.
Also, psychological warfare and reasoning using online are considered to be ideas worthy of Stephen King, who enjoyed using social media and pioneered e-books.
Above all, after the middle part, instead of the traditional blonde beauty, a neurotic middle-aged woman suffering from depression, 'Holly', and a smart black boy, 'Jerome', become involved in the case, presenting a very unique detective story development. The decisive role in solving the case is not played by the main character, the detective, but by the supporting characters, Holly and Jerome.
This is a significant difference from past mystery novels that placed the detective at the center of solving the case.
In its book review, the New York Times praised the novel as a Stephen King-style mystery novel that embodies the argument that "the power to confront powerful modern crimes such as random terrorism is not limited to detectives alone, but requires the role of all people with good intentions."

"At the novel's conclusion, when the characters are helplessly confronted with violence more horrific than at the beginning, Stephen King reveals his own version of 'redemptive virtue' through the woman 'with graying hair and the face of a nervous teenager' and through the pseudo-family of Hodges, Jerome, and Holly.
Thus, it subtly shows that the power of one person alone cannot protect us from all the indiscriminate violence and cruel disasters." - From the New York Times Book Review
