Book Introduction
Voice actor Seo Hye-jeong's first fairy tale
Cheer up for kids who lack confidence
The moment you read aloud, your mind grows.

“Reading will change your future and your dreams.”

The first fairy tale by voice actor Seo Hye-jeong, who is more famous for her voice as Scully in The X-Files than for her name.
Why did this veteran voice actor, famous for his narration voice in "Roller Coaster Man and Woman Exploration Life" and "The Secret of Birth, Aging, Illness, and Death," and who has worked on numerous films, animations, and commercials, including Kongou in "Inuyasha," Vicky in "Sailor Moon," and Bom-i in "Pocket Monster," write a children's story? It's because he consistently gives lectures and meetings promoting "reading," which anyone of any age can enjoy without spending a lot of money, and he realized that "reading" is especially necessary for children.
People say that kids these days are smart and clever, but surprisingly, there are many kids who have a hard time confidently saying what they want to say.
Concerns about poor concentration and literacy were not unfounded.
The belief that nothing could solve these problems better than 'reading' became the seed of 'The Reading Child'.
It was by no means a vague belief.
Because I was a shy, insecure child with a small voice, but through reading aloud, my grades improved, I gained confidence, and I developed a dream of becoming a voice actor, which I eventually achieved.
"The Reading Child" is a magical story that unfolds when young and adult Seo Hye-jeong meet at a mansion on the day of the supermoon.
If you are a shy reader who is concerned about your small voice, you definitely shouldn't miss this book!

Into the book
It was uncomfortable for Jeong-i to hear the other kids talking about home.
On the first day that Jeong-i transferred to the school, she ran into Jun-ho in front of her house, and thanks to Jun-ho's wide-ranging wit, which was as big as the Pacific Ocean, a rumor spread that the persimmon tree house was Jeong-i's house.

Like this, children's misunderstandings every day lead to more misunderstandings.
At first, I secretly liked the children's misunderstandings because they seemed to be interested.
But now it was out of control and Jeong-i was becoming more and more of a silent child.

"who are you?"
Jeong-i asked with a trembling voice.
Then a voice, so calm and beautiful that it could hardly be called a ghost's, answered.

“Don’t be afraid.
No harm done.
“I want to comfort you.”

Hyejeong sat a little closer to Jeong-i.
“That’s why you can overcome thunder and lightning by reading aloud.
When I was home alone and there was thunder and lightning, I read a book out loud.
Thunder, come on! It's like I'm fighting thunder with my voice.

Jeong-i gradually found reading books very enjoyable.
I transferred all the notes I had stuck on the wall into a reading journal and read them out loud every day, and I even recorded them on my teddy bear.
Strangely enough, the voice I recorded today sounded better than the voice I recorded yesterday.

Publisher's Review
Magic unfolds on the day of the supermoon.
A time-transcending encounter between a shy child and a voice actor with the same name.

Jeong-i, a timid and quiet child.
After moving into a larger house in the neighborhood, which the neighborhood called "the persimmon tree house," Jeong-i became even more withdrawn.
There were all sorts of speculations about the persimmon house, which was surrounded by high walls and old persimmon trees and could not be seen inside, and one of them was that it was a chaebol's villa.
Because of this, among the children, Jeong-i became the daughter of an incredibly rich family.
In reality, after her father's business failed, Jeong-i and her mother rented a single room in a mansion.
But I don't have the courage to tell the truth.
As soon as she transferred schools, she became a liar, so Jeong-i felt alienated from her friends.

Then one day, not wanting to show my mother my tears, I went out of the house and pulled the doorknob of a mansion that was standing like a huge monster to avoid the sudden pouring rain.
As the door opens, a living room filled with the dazzling light of the supermoon is revealed.
And there, Jeong-i meets a voice actor with the same name as her, 'Seo Hye-jeong', and a cat, 'Nangdok-i'.
How did these two meet? What will happen next?

Reading: Connecting with Myself and the World
Read aloud to shake off your fear

A voice actor, a professional known for his voice rather than his face or name. Back in the days when foreign films and dramas were rare even on TV, he would watch them live, enjoying the dubbing of the voice actors rather than subtitles.
Among them, the science fiction TV series "The X-Files," which tells the story of FBI agents Fox Mulder and Scully investigating supernatural phenomena, was extremely popular.

《The Reading Child》 started from the childhood story of voice actor Seo Hye-jeong, who voiced Scully, the main character in 《The X-Files》.
He says that he still vividly remembers the scene where he opened a book and read aloud on a thunderstorm day to shake off the fear of being alone.
From that day on, I read out loud not only my favorite books, but also textbooks and workbooks. My confidence grew, studying became more fun, and my grades actually improved.
More than anything, my dream of becoming a voice actor gave me the strength to overcome the difficulties of reality.
This is because the numerous characters I encountered in the book while reading sometimes gave me courage and sometimes comfort.

《The Reading Child》 captures the magical power of reading that voice actor Seo Hye-jeong experienced as a child and still confirms every day.
Author Jeong Yun-gyeong has young Jeong-i and adult Jeong-i meet on the day of the supermoon.
And he comforts the timid and insecure young Jeong-i by giving her 'reading' as a secret to solving her problems.
I hope that this gift will reach children who, like Jeong-i, are suffering because they lack confidence and cannot say what they want to say, and that it will be a miracle.

Author's Note

This story actually started from my own story.
A lot of things have changed for me since I started reading aloud by chance.
I used to be timid and shy, so my voice was small, but as I read aloud, my voice grew louder and I became more confident.
I want to share the joy and amazing benefits of reading with our young friends.
