Into the book
Until then, Jay had no idea how different he was from other people.
It was only after hearing what my brother said that I realized it.
The fact that I have never seen anyone talk to plants and animals like Jaei.
From that day on, Jaei tried to act no differently from other people.
Instead of talking to plants and animals, I would talk to my friends first.
As time passed, Jae-i made friends one by one, and the next year, he was able to have a birthday party with three or four friends.

--- p.24

But after a traumatic birthday party as a child, Jae-i began to believe that he shouldn't be different from others.
Thinking and acting differently from others was dangerous.
It was safest to just follow what everyone else was doing.

--- p.25

Jaei felt happy, as if he had somehow been chosen by the giraffe.
It seemed like a happiness only enjoyed by those who couldn't enter the river view.
Jay gave the giraffe a name.
I decided to call it 'Lucky' because I thought it would bring me good luck in getting into Riverview.
Entering Riverview is something that is commonplace for others, but for Jaei, it is something that requires luck.
It was a bit bittersweet to hear about it.

--- p.37

Self-conscious Emos loves compliments and is always concerned about his reputation.
Conduct periodic opinion polls to review how public opinion about you is forming.
When my score for doing well dropped, I adjusted my behavior to do better.
Emos was applying the virtues a leader should possess to himself.
He said he dreamed of becoming a perfectly rational, reasonable, and compassionate leader. AI had a dream, too.
This was one of the reasons why humans entrusted Riverview and the management of the land to Emos.

--- p.39

Only after searching the forest thoroughly did Jae give up on finding Sora.
Eventually, Sora will be forced to enter Riverview.
It will be hard to avoid Emos' eyes.
What would it be like to be forced into Riverview, a place you didn't want to enter? Jae-i, unable to enter Riverview despite his desire, felt like he was standing outside a door with no answer, no matter how many times he knocked.
On the other hand, Sora, who didn't want to go into Riverview but was forced to, felt like she was trapped behind a tightly locked door.

--- p.46

“And um... you know? I was adopted by my mom and dad.
Our dog, Dosuni, is a dog I've been taking care of since she was at the orphanage.
My brother is the same as me.
“How could you leave me alone and leave my little brother?” Jaei nodded.
But I was still reluctant to go into Riverview like Sora.
I wasn't sure if I could survive on Earth alone, away from my family like Sora.
“I think pets are also family.
Just as we don't even consider the possibility of abandoning our parents, or parents abandoning their children, shouldn't we be thinking the same way about pets? I don't understand how anyone can think that pets can be abandoned under any circumstances.
People who left their pets on the ground and went into Riverview probably didn't think of them as family in the first place.
“You are so selfish.”
--- p.81

“Still, I don’t feel like abandoning my body and leaving.
Even if I transfer my spirit as is, if it's not my original body, I don't think it'll be my real self.
“I want to live with my whole body and mind.” Everyone nodded quietly at Ongi’s words.
“Actually, every time I see our dogs and cats, I think to myself, ‘I’m glad I didn’t go in,’” said Mimi.
Then everyone clapped their hands together, saying, “Okay, okay.”
“Did you all really give up Riverview because of your pets?” Jay wanted to confirm again.
“Those children are like our own children.
“It doesn’t make sense for parents to abandon their children,” said Uncle Lily as if it were obvious.

--- p.102

'What does it feel like to live as a human?' I thought of the question the bat had left behind.
'It's really sad.
I'm ashamed to be like those men.' Those men were cruel people.
They say they love animals, but the only animals they love are their pets.
He sacrificed the life of another animal to save his own pet.
That's not for the animals.
I don't love you.
It's just foolish possessiveness.
If the old men had Brown and could hear the animals, would they have been able to do something like this?
I would never have been able to do that.

--- p.129

"Did you lack your mother's love? Why are you leaving the family?" Jae-yi's mother and father took turns persuading him.
It wasn't like Jae-i's heart didn't waver either.
I sometimes wondered if I had made the wrong choice.
“I thought about what it means to live like me.
Living with animals was who I really was.
That's the look that people hated when I was young.
Back then, I tried to force myself to keep my distance from animals because I didn't want to feel left out, but now I don't have to.
I feel really good and comfortable with the way I look now.
“Mom and Dad, please just accept me like this.” “Just leave me alone.
“Do whatever you want,” said Oppa, taking Jae’s side in a blunt tone.
“You have to persuade your younger brother well.
“What are you talking about?” Mom scolded my brother.
“He’s my little brother, but he’s kind of cool now,” my brother said, giving me a thumbs up.

Publisher's Review
A question posed by a writer armed with unparalleled imagination and prophetic insight!
“What kind of relationship should animals and humans have?”

"The Giraffe Outside the Window" is the story of Jaei, a girl who is left alone after being unable to move into the utopia "Riverview" created by the artificial intelligence Emos with her family.
Jay discovers that he cannot enter Riverview because he has a special ability to communicate with animals, so he prepares to get rid of his special ability and become like everyone else to enter Riverview.
Then one day, Jae-i's heart begins to waver when he meets his friend Sora in the forest.
To Jae, who is about to leave for Riverview even after a bitter separation from his pet, Sora tells him that she chose to live alone, away from her family, because of her pet.
Jaei finds Sora very unfamiliar, but wants to know why she made that choice.

Sora's choice reflects recent thinking on the epistemological shift in attitudes toward non-humans, including animals, through the use of the term 'companion species'.
The perspective from which humans perceive animals has changed from 'pet-companion animal-companion species' to 'companion animal'.
When animals are perceived as commodities to be bought and sold, the term 'pet' is used, and when animals are perceived as beings that are more intimate with humans rather than simply commodities, the term 'companion animal' is used.
Although 'companion animal' is a better term than 'pet', it still objectifies animals and contains a deep-rooted prejudice that only humans are the agents of action.
Because we view nature and humans as separate and dichotomous, we cannot escape the common notion that humans domesticate animals, which are nature.
In contrast, the way of thinking reflected in the term 'companion species' perceives the relationship between humans and animals as equal.
From this perspective, humans are also part of the companion species.
That is, if we think of animals as companion animals, they become beings that cannot be abandoned and cannot be used as experimental subjects.
It's just like humans don't think of their children as beings that can be abandoned or experimented on.

One day, Jaei suddenly meets a giraffe in the garden and begins to interact with various animals, realizing that Sora made that choice because she perceives animals as companions.
What makes this work special is that it redefines the relationship between animals and humans by weaving communication between different species (animals and humans) into a fantastical science fiction narrative.

I believe that living with animals is more than just caring for someone; it is an experience that allows me to grow and develop together with them.
What are animals? What kind of relationship should animals have with humans? What significance do animals hold in our lives? As I pondered these and other questions, my thoughts on animals gradually deepened.
After losing my dog Marin, I wanted to soothe my longing and sadness by reading books, so I started looking for books about animals.
『Animal Liberation』, 『The Zoo of Misunderstanding』, 『What Are Animals to Humans』.
Books like “How Animals Mourn”.
As I read those books, the story of "The Giraffe Outside the Window" began to sprout little by little.
(From the author's note)

I guarantee that after reading "The Giraffe Outside the Window," you will define the relationship between animals and humans in a completely different way.

This is the first time Jae-i has experienced this as he lives alone away from his family.
Loneliness and anxiety, and the need for loving care and true freedom.

Jay and Sora choose to live alone, away from their family.
What they face while living alone is completely different from the daily life they have experienced so far.
Those who were under parental control for reasons such as safety, hygiene, and protection are forced out of their comfort zone the moment they choose to live alone, but in return, they are exposed to the lives of others outside of their comfort zone.
Through their time alone, Jaei and Sora build friendships with peers who choose different lives, stand up to adults who commit injustice, meet and communicate with different species, and interact with diverse neighbors, experiencing a variety of experiences that enrich their formative years.
Staying safe under parental care or control isn't always the best option.
Freedom, whether from parental indifference or permission, is an essential condition for children's growth.
The same goes for Jay and Sora.
They achieve mental freedom and growth while receiving care from their neighbors, even though their parents are absent.

What the author excels at here is that he limits the time that Jaei and Sora are separated from their parents.
Jae-i takes care of Peanut and Walnut a little more, and Sora promises that she will go to Riverview with her parents once Soon-i crosses the rainbow bridge.
This gives the narrative, which could have seemed unrealistic, of young girls leaving their blood relatives and being left alone in another world to be with their pets, a very plausible reality.
Although children will temporarily enjoy freedom and independence and then return to being with their parents as before, they will never be the same again when they return.

In addition, 『The Giraffe Outside the Window』 raises many questions and thoughts within its appropriate narrative.
Can humanity truly trust that AI Emos "always makes just and rational decisions"? Can we truly say they're the same person, even if their minds remain the same but their bodies are different? What kind of relationship should animals and humans have? If we seriously ponder these questions, we'll discover that the children's judge's words, "This is a story about the future and the special choices we will soon face in the age of AI," are no exaggeration.
