Our house has turned into a giant delivery box!
Children trapped in a house with no front door or windows
Aungdaung siblings Harry Hae-soo's escape adventure at home

One morning, I woke up to find that the front door and windows of my house were all gone.
I was trapped inside the house.
What can we do when home is no longer a safe space? The story of "The Door Disappeared One Day" begins with the startling situation of being stranded at home.
Harry and Hae-soo, siblings, are thrown into despair by the unexpected disaster, shouting, "Can a door even disappear in the first place?" But for the first time in their lives, they try boiling ramen, clean the bathroom, and sleep alone, surviving each day without their mother.
No phone or internet connection.
The only thing that connects children to the world is the sporadic video app, iTube.
Haesu uploads a disaster vlog on her iTube channel, 'Anhaetshu TV', and the story of the two gradually becomes famous.
Will Harry and Hae-soo be rescued? Or will they escape their home? "One Day, the Door Disappeared" received praise for "drawing a new facet of disaster in the everyday space we consider the safest: home," and "a truly fresh story," winning the 25th Munhakdongne Children's Literature Award.

Publisher's Review
“TV didn’t do a disaster broadcast, this is Ahn Hae-soo!”
Today's disaster scenes broadcast live on social media

Harry and Hae-soo are trapped inside the house. There's no TV, no internet, no phone.
Knocking on the wall and turning the phone on and off dozens of times doesn't help.
The situation these children face is not unfamiliar to us who have experienced the pandemic.
The paradoxical situation where home becomes a nest that protects me and at the same time a prison that confines me.
Harry and Hae-soo, who have lost contact with the outside world, are at a loss as to how they can inform others that they are trapped.
But like resolute children, the two do not lose hope.
Soon you will find the positive side even in the worst situations.

“You can’t find it because there’s no door?”
“The house is still there.
“The 119 rescue team will break down the wall and rescue you.”
“Then we… can’t go to school today?”

The absence of school and a nagging mother gives the two an unexpected sense of freedom.
Up until now, I've been crawling around on tiptoe because of the noise between floors in my apartment, but if it's a rescue request, it's okay to turn up the music and be noisy.
I draw big doodles on the clean wallpaper and turn on the gas stove, which my mom absolutely forbade, to boil ramen.
This is a passage where you can feel the “power of children who do not give up in the face of harsh reality and fight injustice through play” (Song Su-yeon).

Haesu records the disaster situation as a vlog and uploads it to the only video app she has access to, iTube.
“I didn’t break the door!” “I didn’t start the fire!” Thanks to their humorless attitude, the children were able to endure the confinement that lasted over a month.
People leave comments offering support and encouragement to children in need.
But there are also malicious comments like, “It’s obvious it’s fake,” and “It’s something they did to make money by increasing the number of views.”
The police, who were dispatched to the house after the mother reported it, also questioned whether the children's disappearance was a simple prank, saying, "If they were really locked up, would they be able to act like an iTuber? Subscribe, like, all that?"
The fact that we don't empathize with others' tragic situations, but rather find fault with them or don't believe their sincerity, shows that there are thick walls between people.

Even in the midst of disaster, children find joy and happiness and create a space to breathe.
Is there any other story that shows so well that the present, this very moment, is always the most important?
The sight of children who are faithful to the present makes us reflect on ourselves, who are caught up in tomorrow and cannot live today.
_From the review by Song Su-yeon (children's literature critic)

“If you want to save us, please let the door down.”
House with a door vs. house without a door
What makes a house a home?

Harry, Hae-soo, and their mother lived in the same house, but they didn't have time to look after each other's feelings in their busy days.
'Why does mom nag me about everything?' 'I hate my older sister/younger sister so much.' 'Why don't my kids do what I want? Is it puberty?' Misunderstandings were piling up.
But unexpected disasters make us realize the value of family and ordinary days.
"One Day, the Door Disappeared" shows that the daily life we take for granted may not be so, and asks where true home lies.
A home is a space that cannot be measured simply in terms of physical space or property value.
A place where you can let go of your tired body and mind from society, a place where your family can be together, is a true home.
Just as the "blue bird" that the children in Maurice Maeterlinck's classic "The Blue Bird" set out to find turned out to be a turtledove that they had been raising at home, Harry's family rediscovers the importance of home at home.

“If there is no door, we become the door!”
An adventure from home to home
The strongest thing is the will to never give up.

Harry and Hae-soo become increasingly exhausted from being unable to see their mother or friends and having to stay in a small house.
Haesu's playful suggestion to hatch fertilized eggs soon grows into an expectation of new life and change in their stifling daily lives.
The two take care of the egg with all their heart and hope.
And the hours-long struggle of a tiny chick to break out of its eggshell and be born gives courage to children who have been waiting for someone to rescue them.
Eventually, Harry and Hae-soo decide to create their own door in the doorless house and take a step into the darkness they were afraid of.
The person who most firmly defines his own limitations may be none other than himself.
"One Day the Door Disappeared" is a story that encourages me to imagine bigger things I can do and to give it a try.

Artist Me, who is active across various fields such as comics, picture books, and illustrations, has dynamically depicted the adventures of siblings Harry and Hae-soo that unfold at home with vivid colors and bold screen composition.
Even in the face of unexpected disasters, we can feel the strength of children who overcome each day with positive energy.

“I didn’t do it, TV, this is Ahn Hae-soo.
We are trying to escape this house.

I've never been to an escape room cafe, but isn't this a real escape room?
I'm really nervous right now.
I wish you good luck.
“I didn’t ask you to come out here… … .”

New stories will continue to begin and grow.
Until all the doors are open.
Okay, now for the real last word.

[Reviews]

The ending, which adds humor to the potentially dark story of "The Lost Children," turns it into a new reflection and challenge on daily life, and inevitably draws out possibility from a bleak reality with no future, comes from the author's understanding and belief in the genre of fairy tales and the children who are the main characters of fairy tales.

Children who are not caught up in the reality of being trapped find joy and happiness in various adventures and escapes even in the midst of disaster, creating a space to breathe.

A mind that prevents you from believing in yourself and supporting yourself with all your might.
The unwillingness to try anything for fear of failure.
A mind that ignores the potential within me.
Perhaps it was we who made all the doors disappear, who made all the doors into walls.
