What we need is kind comfort and courage!

Bestselling authors loved by children have joined forces.
Author Lee Na-young, winner of the Munhakdongne Children's Literature Award for 『Time Store』 and 『Constipated Detective Siluk』, and illustrator Yoo Si-yeon, winner of 『Anican』 and 『Anything Stationery Store』, have returned with the original children's book 『Star-Rated Class President Na Woo-ju』 for middle school students.
A new story from two authors who gently observe children's hearts and engage in playful conversations is now unfolding.

Na Woo-joo, who has average test scores, athletic ability, and even friendships, decides to become class president because she wants to be recognized by her friends and parents and feel special.
One day, Woo-joo sees the delivery app for his parents' "Woo-joo Pizza" and comes up with an ingenious promise to get his friends' ratings for his work as class president.
Will Space and Space Pizza, now class presidents, be able to continue receiving five stars?

Accustomed to easily evaluating and being evaluated, are we really okay with this? Set against the backdrop of Class 3, Grade 4 at Seolgi Elementary School, and Space Pizza, episodes stemming from star ratings delicately intertwine and intertwine, ultimately forming a single story.

Into the book
“It feels good to get a star rating.
“It also makes me think that I need to do better.”

Dad said, checking the rating of Space Pizza again.

“Dad, how important are the ratings?
You don't get rich unless you get good reviews.
“I’m going to be a five-star class president.”
--- p.29

The children cheered and loved it.
I was dumbfounded that I had only postponed the homework check once.
Still, I felt proud that I had accomplished something as the class president.
Above all, I felt even better because I thought I had beaten Mina.
As expected, Mina was sticking her mouth out like a duck.

'Imina, have you seen the performance of Captain Nawoo?'

I wanted to grab Mina and say this.

--- pp.53~54

“What the heck, even if I postpone my homework, it’s going to be a mess.”

I was reading the reviews and I was laughing.
I kept putting off my homework because of them, but now it's all nonsense.
Since it was anonymous, I couldn't tell who was who, but my face was red as if I had been embarrassed in front of others.

--- p.56

There were dark clouds over the space pizza as well.
Even with the same pizza, some people say it tastes good, while others say it doesn't.
As the saying goes, "the belly button is bigger than the stomach," some people asked for more service.
There were also people who asked for food that wasn't on the menu.
If you don't meet those demands, your star rating will be reduced without mercy.

--- p.73

“Ugh, I don’t know what I’m doing.”

That's what my dad says the most these days.
It seemed like there was a lot of agonizing over the food and the rating.
I understood my father's feelings better than anyone else.
I'm also confused between the class president and the star rating.

--- p.87

I felt uneasy, like I was sitting on a pincushion.
I also wondered who the kids were who wrote gossip on the anonymous bulletin board.
On anonymous bulletin boards, I could speak freely because I couldn't see the other person, but I didn't have the confidence to confront them face to face.
I thought that maybe those kids were like me.
Because we can't see each other, we can talk carelessly.
I had to get my rating back.
I couldn't just become the penalty point class president and the bread point class president like this.
--- p.99

Publisher's Review
A world where everything is rated.
Is it my turn to receive it now?

Our daily lives are filled with countless 'stars'.
Not only in the case of popular celebrities, but also in restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, hospitals, beauty salons, and other places we visit, from books, movies, performances, dramas, and even games that we enjoy, to various online shopping malls and food delivery apps, we often rate products and change our decisions based on the ratings.
Even in map apps, you can see star ratings for roads and public facilities.
While this is amusing, it also shows how deeply star ratings have penetrated our lives.
Rating, receiving, and leaving reviews have become a part of our culture of helping each other.
These statistics can help us make quick decisions in our busy daily lives, but these days, our reliance on star ratings has become so great that they are sometimes manipulated.
Many self-employed people are suffering due to rating terrorism, and serious cases of health problems caused by the stress are constantly reported in the media.

What we need is
Even if it's not a five-star rating,
Comfort that even if I fail, I am okay as I am

Why do we rely so heavily on ratings and reviews? The author speculates that people's reliance on ratings may stem from a fear of failure and a desire to achieve success without trial and error.
Society does not tolerate the time and effort required to gradually get to know ourselves and others.
We set standards for what is 'ordinary' and what is 'special' and evaluate lives and individuals that fail to meet those standards.
Online and on social media, flashy images, rather than honest stories, receive more likes and attention.
In an era where online is becoming more and more familiar than offline, children are directly exposed to this trend.
What children need at this time is not encouragement that if they try harder, they can succeed and become special like them, but the truth.
Even if I'm not a five-star student, even if I fail, the simple truth that I'm okay and enough just as I am can strengthen the muscles of my heart and keep my children from getting hurt.

“We take it for granted that we rate and share almost everything, trying to make better choices.
After thinking about it carefully, I think it might be because I'm afraid of failure.
I think the universe has now figured out that it's okay if it's not five stars and it's okay if it fails.
I will definitely continue to work hard to become a good class president, just like I promised at the beginning.
I also want to say something to the young readers who read this book.
I'm okay just the way I am.
“Because we are as special as the entire universe.”

- From the author's words

Because we shine brighter when we're together

Another main character in 『Star Class President Nawoo Joo』 is all the friends in the classroom who live with and have conflicts with Joo Joo.
Mina, who is a perfect child who is called the "daughter of a rich man" and looks prickly but still doesn't lose the value of friends, Yudam, who was forced to become an executive because of his parents' warnings but found a way with the universe, and Taewoong, who is tall and has a loud voice but is still quick to react emotionally.
The story does not judge or conclude children based on their fragmentary actions.
Characters with their own reasons, concerns, and stories collide with each other and solve problems, filling the classroom.

As readers close the book, they will be left to think about accepting themselves as they are and tolerating each other.
And now, here and now, I will see my precious daily life with my friends next to me with new eyes.
Because just like the universe and our friends, we shine brighter when we're together.
