The first Munhakdongne Crescent Moon Literary Award Grand Prize Winner

『Haeden Snack』, which won the grand prize at the 1st Munhakdongne Crescent Moon Literary Award with enthusiastic responses from the judges, has been published.
The Munhakdongne Crescent Moon Literary Award is a new contest established in 2023, and is a children's story contest for lower grades that was separated 25 years after the first contest for the Munhakdongne Children's Literature Award began in 1999.
Munhakdongne has been a pillar of Korean children's literature, producing award-winning works that have been much loved by children, such as 『The Long Night』, 『Lane 5』, 『Sam Baek-i's Seven-Day Market』, and 『Not Kung Fu, But Poop Fu』.
Reflecting the reality of Korean children's literature, which has become so diverse that it is difficult to accommodate genre developments with just the name of "Children's Literature Award," the Munhakdongne Crescent Literature Award was launched, focusing on the characteristics of lower grade readers.
Among the 278 works submitted to the first contest, Dong Ji-ah's "Haeden Snack," which is filled with the optimism and positive energy of a fairy tale, was selected as the inaugural winner of the Munhakdongne Crescent Moon Literary Award, along with the praise that "this work will be a great gift to young readers who enjoy the joy of reading and stories more than any other age group."

Publisher's Review
My name is Kang Jeong-in, and my nickname is Chicken Gangjeong.
The second daughter of the owner of Haeden Snack Bar!

Kang Jeong-in, a second-grade student in class 1 at Haemil Elementary School, has curly hair and wears red-rimmed glasses and is the second daughter of Haeden Bunsik.
One rainy afternoon, when the rain comes and goes, Jeong-in's umbrella disappears.
The orange polka dot umbrella that my older sister Jeong-eun gave me because she thought it was childish, and it's the umbrella that my classmate Kim Ban-chan said he wouldn't use even if he gave it to her.
Jeong In suspects Kim Ban Chan as the culprit and puts a curse on the umbrella.
"If you open that umbrella, you'll turn into the thing you hate most in the world!" But it's not Kim Banchan who's cursed, but Kang Jeong-in?! After her tearful birthday party last Sunday, she's now transformed into the very thing she hates even looking at.

At age nine, I faced the biggest crisis of my life.
“I hesitated whether to laugh or cry.
Then it started to feel funny, so I decided to laugh.”

The scenery of Haeden Bunsik, transformed and seen, is new.
Regular customers are coming in one by one, and today, for some reason, it seems like Mom is giving me a lot of extras… … .
Jeong-in, who always worked on math workbooks or practiced dictation at the innermost table in the snack bar, gets to see her mother working up close for the first time.
When Jeong-eun, Kim Ban-chan, Kim Ban-chan's mom, and best friends Ji-an and So-mi also gather at the snack bar, they feel happy and forget that they have transformed.
Of all things, she has to turn into a snack bar. This is the worst possible situation for a snack bar owner's daughter, but Jeong-in's optimism and ability to enjoy every moment even in a crisis are hilarious and make you wonder what kind of story will unfold next.
After barely overcoming several near misses, Jeong-in's heart, which had been sharply on edge as she listened to her own story at the snack bar where she was not present, gradually became more and more hazy.
Meanwhile, she finds herself in an unfair situation where she has to immediately run away from the kitchen and return to being Kang Jeong-in, the second daughter of the snack bar owner… … .

My mood is half sweet and half spicy and tearful

『Haeden Snack Bar』, which has been praised for its excellent portrayal of “a sense of stability in the world and faith in family,” is a book that contains the fun of transformation fantasy, the thrilling tension of a twist, and the growth of a child growing up brightly in his own place, like a set of tteokbokki.
The desire to invite your favorite friends to your birthday party and treat them well, the disappointment of a family you love but don't move your heart the way you do, the friendship with best friends who have different personalities and tastes but understand each other well, and even the various incidents with a friend of the opposite sex who you can't tell if they are friends or enemies but who have become an indispensable part of your daily life.
In the midst of a bustling daily life, Jeong-in grows up experiencing various emotions.

The story begins with the child feeling sorry for his mother who is too busy working to come out and greet him with an umbrella, but ends with the sunlight of understanding and reconciliation.
"Haeden Snacks," which "combines the joy of the experience of eating with a sense of stability in the world," is a story that warmly encourages all growing beings, allowing children to express themselves boldly, to find positivity and humor even in the midst of occasional crises, and to consider the hearts of others in unusual situations.

“I tried to sprinkle rain on the background of the origin to make someone grow at the moment the sun rises.
Then, memories of my childhood, when I never received an umbrella, came back to me and made me finish writing the article.
I hope that 『Haeden Snack Bar』 can accommodate the complaints of children who still have to walk around in the rain for various reasons.”
_Author's Note

Stimulating the senses with a bubbling sound
Painter Yun Jeong-ju's 'Haeden Bunsik'

Artist Jeongju Yoon, who has been drawing pictures that touch children's hearts for over 30 years and providing them with the joy of reading fairy tales, builds tension step by step, maximizing the thrill of transformation, and never loses sight of the protagonist's emotions in any scene.
Even after the transformation, the sense of expression that allows readers to immediately recognize Jeong In is also excellent.
Everything drawn on the ground seems to be moving and alive, so it is full of scenes that are great for letting your child use their imagination.
The solid and precise sentences of writer Dong-ji A, and the vivid and cheerful drawings of artist Jeong-ju Yoon spread over them, lead readers to the ending without any hesitation, following the protagonist's emotional line.
This book will give you the experience of being completely immersed in the story, as if you were in a Haeden snack bar with warm steam rising and a sweet and spicy smell in the air.

■ Review comments

“The advantage of ‘Haeden Bunshik’ is its naturalness.
The process of the main character, Jeong-in, being turned into fried chicken by a spell she made herself and then returning to her original state is as natural as the flow of water.
The sentences are solid and precise, making it easy for young readers to understand the situation.
The character’s health also stands out.”

“First graders are surprised when they come to school.
Because everything is bigger than in a kindergarten or daycare center.
The classrooms are big, the bathrooms are big, and the playground is big.
Young children perceive the world as much more spectacular than adults perceive it.
But it is also easy to feel anxious.
So, in fairy tales for young children, it is important to give children a sense of stability about the world.
This work does exactly that.”

“As the saying goes, ‘foodie,’ adults also like delicious food, but children especially love to eat.
When asked after a field trip, “What was your favorite part?”, younger children often say, “The pork cutlet we had at the rest stop was the best.”

Food is also linked to experiences, with certain foods recalling certain experiences.
"Haeden Snacks," which combines the joy of eating with a sense of stability in the world, is a story that will serve as a foundation for children to grow up strong.
How can you not love this 『Haeden Bunsik』 with its chewy, savory, and sweet chicken flavor!
