The final winner will be decided 100% by readers' choice!
The first Wisdom House Fantasy Literature Award, children's category grand prize winner, "Infected Animal"
"Is this world, seen through the eyes of animals, heaven or hell? The answer lies in this book!" - Children's Jury

Kim Si-kyung's "Infected Animal" was selected as the grand prize winner in the children's category of the first Wisdom House Fantasy Literature Award, which is 100% determined by readers' choice.
The child judges, who seemed to feel the weight of the choice and seriously engaged in the two-week judging process, decided on "Infected Animals" without hesitation, with the final comment, "Is this world seen through the eyes of animals a heaven or a hell? The answer is in the book!"

With environmental and climate crisis issues emerging as hot potato issues day after day, the fact that this work, which depicts the pandemic situation, was selected as the grand prize winner by two-thirds of the child judges who participated in the final judging process is very significant.
Children know better than anyone that the world we live in is headed toward destruction, a world brought about by human error, and that there is no place left to retreat.
And by choosing this work, we are signaling our willingness to confront, not avoid, that uncomfortable truth, but to look closely at it and explore new possibilities.
In a planet shattered by ecological and climate crises, what new ways of living and relating can we envision for the future? Through "Infected Animal," a vivid narrative that warns us against humans' extreme destruction of the Earth's environment, we contemplate the direction we, who live and must live on this planet, should take in the future.

Into the book
After confirming that they had disappeared around the corner of the alley, chasing the stray cats, Cho-rok opened the console box and took out the paper.
The paper had a title written on it: 'MTV (Mysterious Talking Virus) Quarantine Response Tips'.
As he read the text that began with the sentence, "For public safety, this is called NAI (New Avian Influenza)," Cho-rok put the paper back in the box and hurriedly got out of the car.
"So, you're saying it's not actually a new avian flu, but a mystery talking virus? A mystery talking virus... a virus that speaks unknown words? The new avian flu was a lie after all!"
--- p.40

Green ran to the tunnel entrance.
Cotton candy was just starting to come out of the tunnel.
"You suddenly laughed earlier, so I was so surprised! Why on earth did you do that?" Chorok-i asked, his heart pounding as he remembered the moment.
Either way, Cotton Candy burst out laughing again.
“Puhahaha.
No, he's just pretending to be dead, but he's so nervous that he farts here and there.
“Isn’t it funny? Isn’t it so funny?” The other animals also burst into laughter here and there as if they were reminded of the situation.
Cho-rok-i thought that animals were different from humans.
Animals graze peacefully in front of predators, unless they are hungry and hunting.

--- p.73

“Let’s make people talk first!” “Let’s…infect them with MTV?” Chorok’s eyes widened in surprise.
"okay.
Rather, it spreads the virus more.
Rats are perfect for hiding and spreading viruses without being noticed.
That's how you create more infected animals.
Then maybe we can change the world together with our infected animal friends.
If we tell humans in their language that we feel and are in pain just like them, they won't be able to ignore us.
Sister, you said humans are afraid of new and unknown things, right? That's why they hunt infected animals.
But isn't it true that what humans are truly afraid of is facing the truth that they have been pretending not to know?" Choco, who was shocked by the sight of countless animals locked in cages at the zoo, had changed a little.
Cho-rok-i was somewhat unfamiliar with this type of chocolate.

--- p.94

At that moment, Choco suddenly looked at Cho-rok-i and said.
“Sister, go out now quickly.
Sister, it'll be okay.
“Because you’re human.” Choco’s words, which seemed to be taking sides, made Choro feel a surge of resentment.
Choco, not knowing whether or not he knew Chorok's feelings, turned his back on Chorok and was busy discussing ways to escape with the animals.
No matter what, Cho-rok couldn't just leave like this.
Putting aside my feelings of regret for a moment, I realized that Choco was just worried about Chorok-i, as always.
So the point was to stay in a safe place.
In the crowd.
But Cho-rok decided to stay with Choco.
Sometimes, even if you don't understand, being there for each other is what makes family.

--- p.98

"Now you know why I was so mean to you and Cho-rok? Every time you called Cho-rok, I thought of your stupid mom.
But as I watched Cho-rok-i search for you without giving up until the end, I thought for the first time that I might have been wrong.
Maybe your mother's owner, or rather, your mother's older sister, didn't abandon you. Maybe your mother's older sister is still looking for you. Maybe you and your mother's older sister were a real family, just like you and Cho-rok.
“I always felt cold when I thought of Mom, but thinking of her like this makes my heart feel a little warmer.” Choco quietly sat down next to Gongchi.
And he wrapped the mackerel warmly with his fluttering tail.

--- p.127

“Green.
We'd love to hear from you.
“Seeing you risk your life to save Choco and the other infected animals made me think that maybe you really know what the best choice for the Earth is.” Chorok was taken aback by the sudden suggestion.
The sea turtle man and the mole man opened the drawer below the emergency return button and took out one red capsule and one blue capsule.
And each of them placed a capsule on their palm.
“If you choose this red capsule, the Mystery Talking Virus will spread further and all animals on Earth will be able to talk.
“If you think animals can change the future of the Earth, choose the red capsule,” said the sea turtle human.
“If you choose this blue capsule, the vaccine and cure will spread and the talking animals will disappear from the face of the Earth.
If you believe humans can change the future of the Earth, choose the blue capsule.” “Why are you entrusting me with such a difficult choice?” “Because I trust you.
“I believe in the courage you’ve shown so far, your sincerity and love for animals.” “And your sense of responsibility.
“Because you have never once shied away from your responsibility to protect animals.” Even after hearing their story, Chorok couldn’t make a decision.
I didn't feel confident enough to handle the weight of this enormous choice.
“Green, there’s no time.” “You have to choose a capsule now.”

Publisher's Review
Humans are by no means free from the definition of 'infected animals'!
In a world torn apart by ecological and climate crises,
Chorok's adventure to find a new way of life and relationships!

"Infected Animal" is a work that imagines the reality of a few years after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides.
As the new avian influenza outbreak rekindles the sense of crisis that existed during the COVID-19 pandemic, government authorities lock down villages and cull infected animals.
The protagonist, Cho-rok, struggles to save his beloved dog, Choco, from culling, and in the process, he becomes one with animals and experiences resistance against humans as a human.
And as we look back on our own existence through the eyes of animals, we realize that humans are not free from the label of 'infected animals'.

This work unfolds a vast narrative that far exceeds the scope expected from a children's adventure narrative, and through it poses meaningful questions to the reader.
At the end of his long journey, Chorok is faced with a choice: he must choose between the red capsule that holds hope for animals and the red capsule that holds hope for humans.
What choice would I make? As ecological and climate crises pose a real threat to the planet, and as the anthropocentrism we've long held threatens both humans and "non-humans," "Infected Animal" sharply asks us what we should do about ourselves.
The fantasy space that opens up in the gap between animals and humans, the environment and humans, makes readers feel as if the future has arrived here and now, leading them to spontaneously seek new ways of living and relating.

"Infected Animal" is a timely work that captures the pandemic situation.
In addition to the pandemic situation, it contains various motifs such as livestock culling, animal liberation, and time travel, and the ability to weave together these many motifs that could easily become tangled without difficulty to create a solid narrative stands out.
The theme is a warning about humans destroying the Earth's environment to the extreme, but the film is also excellent in blending the theme with vivid stories to avoid revealing it in a raw way.
The various animal characters' bickering episodes and light humor are scattered throughout, allowing for a relaxed reading experience rather than a tense one.
The twist that unfolds in Chorok's final choice is also a refreshing element.
(Kim Seo-jeong, children's literature critic)

"Infected Animals" is a story about various incidents that occur when animals infected with a virus begin to speak human language.
The film humorously portrays the insensitivity of humans, who often pull out the terrible card of culling, and the related important topics of animal rights and the environment, from a child's perspective, in a way that is easy to understand and empathize with.
(Song Su-yeon, children's literature critic)

Can humans change themselves? Will they strive to live in harmony with non-humans? In these times, when hope dwindles and we are left with only a hint of doubt, this story, which tells us there is still hope, offers great comfort.
This book will open the door to big changes that start from small things like caring for others other than yourself.
(Im Iji, Aladdin Children's MD)

Not only does it resonate with readers by reflecting the reality of the pandemic era, it also naturally incorporates potentially difficult topics such as environmental pollution, livestock culling, and animal liberation into an exciting and solid story.
I just followed the journey of Cho-rok-i and his animal friends, but I got so absorbed in the book that I was sad to see it end.
A masterpiece that kills two birds with one stone: narrative fun and thematic awareness that meet children's expectations.
(Park Eun-young, Yes24 Children's PD)

The MTV virus that makes animals speak human language!
Red capsules that spread viruses VS blue capsules that eliminate viruses,
What is Green's choice? And what is my choice?

It all started with the MTV virus.
The Mystery Talking Virus, also known as the MTV Virus, was spread by Shadow ET, a life form from the future, to keep humans from destroying the Earth. Animals infected with this virus are able to use human language.
It is about having a voice.

In a human-centered society, humans have assigned animals to different uses through an arbitrary, human-centered classification system.
Dogs are for pets, pigs are for food, goldfish are for ornamental purposes… … .
But the situation is reversed when animals gain voices.
Animals, who have been reborn as completely different beings than before, not only classify humans, but also make plans for their extinction.

In this situation, Chorok is faced with a decision: whether to allow animals to continue to have voices. He must choose between the red capsule, which spreads the MTV virus further, causing all animals on Earth to speak human language, and the blue capsule, which spreads a vaccine and cure, thereby eradicating all animals that speak human language.
A red capsule that gives hope to animals VS a red capsule that gives hope to humans.
Which capsule will Cho-rok-i choose?

"Is this world, seen through the eyes of animals, heaven or hell? The answer lies in this book!"

Here are some of the final comments left by the children's jury when selecting "Infected Animals" as the winner.

I really like the way the story unfolds, as if trying to light a torch in a dark world.
A story that gets more and more immersive the more you read it.
(Go Na-hee, Hanmaeum Elementary School)

I learned that I shouldn't speak carelessly and I shouldn't act carelessly.

The novel idea of animals being infected with a virus and becoming able to speak, as well as the twist at the end, were refreshingly shocking.
