Publisher's Review

Can only what I know be considered "real"? - "The Righteous Eunjae"

You've probably seen crime news and clenched your fist, thinking, "If only I had the power!"
Eun-jae, the main character of "Righteous Eun-jae," really gained such power.
Three times a day, I became a member of the 'Bucket of Justice', which allowed me to pour cold water with a transparent bucket on a child who had done something wrong.
A child who threatens, pushes, and curses others… Eunjae firmly punishes bad children.
The moment Eun-jae gives her friend sincere advice about her outfit, the bucket of justice is directed at her.

Author Oh Ha-rim, who made us ponder the question, "Which is more important, the future of humanity or the future of an individual?" through her debut work, "Sunjae and Kiwan," asks what "justice as we know it" is in her new work, "The Righteous Eunjae."
What's worse: taking someone else's belongings or judging their appearance? Could it be that, like Eun-jae, who never once ponders who should be given the bucket, is so confident in her own righteousness?

Meanwhile, Hwang Seon-mi's "The Moment the Alley Opens" begins with 'Lina' encountering a cat that walks on two legs.
Lina, who thought she didn't need friends, desperately longs for 'that one friend' with whom she can share her magical stories.
It is a charming fantasy that makes children today think about 'why stories are necessary.'
The short stories in 『Righteous Eunjae』 exquisitely project the reality of children onto old stories (「That Night, Hong-i and Gil-dong」, Jin Hyeong-min), look at the conflict between the middle-aged and elderly from the perspective of an unbiased child (「Understanding as Small as the Tip of a Fingernail」, Choi Na-mi), and compare people whose activities are restricted due to a virus with animals kept in cages by humans (「The Taste of Life」, Jeon Seong-hyeon), thereby raising questions about the world we believed we knew well.
But there's no need to be anxious.
Because the courage to break away from the familiar world and enter a new one, and the subversive imagination, are the forces that foster children's growth.

Pay attention to the moment of change that confronts me and the world.

The Four Seasons Children's Library, which began in 1991 with the series 'Traditional Fairy Tales/Creative Fairy Tales for Children in the South and the North to Read Together,' is publishing its 100th book after 30 years.
With the motto of “children’s books that capture the spirit of the times,” Four Seasons Children’s Library has published children’s literature that all generations, from children in their teens to adults, can read and think about together, such as “Leafie, a Hen Into the Wild,” which has been translated and published in 30 countries around the world, “The Story Told by Life,” which is considered the starting point of ecological fairy tales, and “Mom’s 40th Birthday,” which makes people think about the life of “mothers,” who have played a typical role in fairy tales.

The two collections of short stories, 『Righteous Eunjae』 and 『Dynamite』, published to commemorate the 100th volume of the Four Seasons Children's Library, focus on 'now, us, and life.'
Among them, it captures the 'life-changing moment' that everyone has experienced at least once in their lives.
For some, perhaps for many living today, this COVID-19 pandemic has been a major turning point in their lives.
Before the pandemic, some people may have had their lives completely changed by the global environment and disasters surrounding us.
Life-changing moments are not limited to these realistic situations.
Unknown beings, unknown times, and unknown spaces also have such an influence on us.

That 'change' is not necessarily negative, and as we go through this turning point in life, we once again experience a moment of growth.
What moments will change the lives of children today? How will these changes shape their encounters with the world, how will they conflict with it, and what kind of lives will they lead?

Thirteen children's literature authors, each with their own unique world of works, have provided interesting answers to this question through "Righteous Eunjae" and "Dynamite."
This answer is also a voice of empathy and comfort to children in anxious times.
