Into the book
“Mom, is your dream that great?”
“Wow! That’s great.
"What's your dream, Saebom? To be a travel writer like your dad?"
I shook my head.
My dream has changed several times already.
I wanted to travel like my dad, write, and exhibit my photos.
But I don't know now.
I feel like my dreams are gone.
These days, all I wish for is for my dad to come home safely.
So I pray every night.
Without my mom knowing.
If I'm sad, my mom will be sadder.
“Mom, you said that what you desperately want is a dream.”
My mom was busy cutting vegetables, so I barely heard anything.
So I spoke a little louder.
Right now, the only person I can talk to is my mom.
“What I desperately want right now is….
“Going to school every day.”
“Hey, is that all?”
“Making friends at school.
And eating school lunches.”
“Oh my god, shit!”
--- p.15~17
The child saw me and came towards me.
“Should I give you this one?”
It's a candy cane.
I saw that it said 'Dalgona' on the shell and I grabbed it.
I think he saw that broadcast too.
I wish he was a first grader like me.
I just gave the kid a sheet of glitter stickers I had bought.
It's okay because I have two more.
Besides, he was the one who gave me the candy cane first.
The traffic light changed.
The child waved his hand and ran away.
I don't know if I said 'hello!' or 'bye!'
Anyway, I couldn't hear what he said very well.
I sucked on the candy cane.
When I opened the candy wrapper, I saw the large letters 'Dalgona' and the small letters 'The best in the world' above them.
So this candy is the 'world's sweetest' candy.
I put the candy wrapper in my pocket and follow the way I came.

Publisher's Review
If you sprinkle some magic powder, it becomes the sweetest thing in the world!
Saebom, who achieved her dream of eating school lunches, and grandmother Gab-bun, who achieved her dream of going to school.
A sweet and special school life!
For adults, Dalgona is most often remembered as a sweet treat that they secretly made and ate without their mother's knowledge.
Pour sugar into a ladle, place it on a gas stove, and when it melts, sprinkle baking soda on it.
Then, as the sugar water turns caramel-colored, a sweet smell spreads.
And the sweet taste that spreads in your mouth when you put the puffy dalgona in your mouth! I remember emptying a ladleful, making more, and burning the ladle while eating more, and getting scolded by my mom.
Dalgona, the snack of our memories, has been transformed into various things for children these days, such as dalgona candies.
However, it was Dalgona that made the dreams of the main characters of this book, Saebom, her mother, and her grandmother, Gab-bun, come true.
Saebom's dream is to go to school, eat school lunch, and make friends.
Mom's dream is for the newly opened art academy to do well, and Saebom's grandmother's dream is for her to go to school.
However, the dreams of all three people were put on hold due to the aftereffects of COVID-19, which has spread across the world this year.
Fortunately, Saebom went to school, but she hasn't made any friends yet, and her mother is worried because no students are coming to the newly opened art academy.
Also, Grandma Gap-bun has just started studying to achieve her dream of becoming a college student and getting her driver's license.
Saebom carries around the shell of the 'World's Best Dalgona Candy' that a child gave her while she was out for a bit on a rainy day and stopped by a stationery store.
I wait with excitement, wondering if the empty desk in the classroom might be that child.
Saebom and the other children in the class cannot sit close to their friends or brainstorm.
But little by little, they get to know each other's names, and sometimes they even get to know each other's faces when they take off their masks.
Also, my mother put her dream of running her own art academy on hold for a while, but for a better tomorrow, she got a job at a cafe because she liked the taste of the dalgona coffee she made.
Grandma Gap-bun, who runs a coffee shop, opened a cafe to fulfill her dream, and makes and sells Dalgona coffee there.
And Saebom became a student in his class.
These three people are of different ages and have different dreams, but they are moving forward to achieve 'the sweetest dream in the world.'
As the author said, "It is natural for children to go to school, for adults to work, and for the streets and markets to be overflowing with people," I look forward to the day when we can naturally do the things that should have been done naturally every day.
