We have hired YouTube star cat 'Gangnam' as our CEO.
Kim Butler Ji-hoon's Unpredictable Extreme Part-Time Job Experience
The birth of a new fairy tale fit for the 2020s!

Lee Ji-eum's full-length children's story, "Gangnam Boss," winner of the 26th Golden Toad Award in 2020, has been published by Biryongso.
This fairy tale, which contains the special part-time job experience of Ji-hoon, who becomes the boss of a YouTube star cat named 'Gangnam' with a million subscribers, was praised by the judges for its "timely and special subject matter" and "not only is the imagination outstanding, but the author's wit is also amazing."

Being a YouTuber has long been a popular 'job' that many people, not just children, dream of.
"Gangnam Boss" is special in that the main character is not a child who wants to become a YouTuber, but a cat who has already achieved success through YouTube.
The comical friendship story between the grandpa cat 'Gangnamnyang', who shows his various sides in front of and behind the camera and shares his own philosophy of life, and the energetic elementary school student Jihoon, who saves money through part-time jobs and tries to reunite his scattered family, shows the sweet and bitter tastes of life and delivers a new message about the price of dreams and hard work.

Author Lee Ji-eum, who is also the 'butler' of four actual cats, was inspired to write the story after seeing a photo of a child holding a stray cat in his arms.
The story of a twelve-year-old boy who bravely tries to overcome his situation, along with the clever and unique cat character that is infused with observations on cat behavior and habits, delivers a moving and entertaining story that never lets up through comical dialogue and unpredictable plot development.

Into the book
“Why am I so cute, elegant, lovable, and even wise? Why is it, why is it, huh? Why doesn’t everyone fall for me? Meow, meow, meow.”
--- p.14

“Stray cats rarely live with their families.
There are more cases where mothers get sick or die early from car accidents.
You're twelve years old and your family is still alive.
“If it’s a cat, that’s a miracle.”
--- p.47

“Butler Kim, get down, get down, my paws should fill the screen, meow meow, like that.
He told me to catch the point.
“Meow, meow, meow.”
--- p.56

Every time I saw that sight, I felt unlucky.
But as I listened to the president's story of hard times, I began to think that maybe when someone is unlucky, there's a reason why.

--- p.58

“Opening your eyes to see what is invisible, and opening your ears to hear what is inaudible – that is the reward for suffering.”
--- p.59

“The sunlight is so nice, let’s soak up some sun and then go slowly.
“Sunshine is free.”
“Oh, boy, school is not a place where you can go so slowly.
If you're late, you'll get in trouble.
“If you keep doing this, I’ll go alone.”
“Anyway, people don’t know the value of things that are given to them for free.”
--- p.63

“People think that ‘who it belongs to’ is the most important thing.
Whose land, whose house, whose food, even trash.
“I hate it when things invade other people’s property, no matter what.”
“What did you say? Cats don’t eat other people’s garbage because they want to.
“It was people who covered the forests, fields, and even streams with cement, making it impossible for us to hunt.”
--- p.68

Being friends may not have anything to do with whether your house is big or small, whether you have a lot of money or not, or whether you are good at something or not.
--- p.75

Watching the boss, I realized that you don't have to be good at studying, have a lot of money, be young, be healthy, or do useful things to be loved.
I realized that even if I wasn't good at anything, even if I did things that seemed useless to people, even if it didn't benefit me in any way, I could still be loved just for existing.

--- p.91

“PD Kim, if it’s okay with you, I’d like to adopt you. What do you think?”
“Boss, I... I’m talking about adoption.
Could you adopt my mom and younger sibling too? I can't just live comfortably in such a nice home.
And… … Also… … Dad… … When you come back… … Will you be able to adopt me too?”
--- p.95

Publisher's Review
A cheeky switch between a cat boss and a human part-timer!

Twelve-year-old Ji-hoon sees a flyer recruiting part-time workers and arrives in front of a grand pink gate.
The boss who welcomed Jihoon is none other than YouTube star cat Gangnamnyang.
A shameless and sly cat who greets you arrogantly from a box and then suddenly starts dancing to the outdated "Gangnam Style" is the boss! Ji-hoon has a feeling that his first social life will not be easy.
From preparing the boss's meals, cleaning the bathroom, and taking care of his toenails, to filming and editing YouTube videos, and managing subscriber comments...
In addition, I am busy moving the CEO who keeps climbing onto the keyboard or my lap, saying that it is warm.
Comical situations that any cat owner can relate to unfold vividly before your eyes.
It shows various aspects of YouTube, which may now be the most familiar medium to children, from the use of copyright-free background music and fonts to the manual that outlines the rules for leaving replies, to the extraordinary life of a Gangnam CEO who is so different in front of and behind the camera.

“PD Kim, if it’s okay with you, I’d like to adopt you. What do you think?”
“Boss, I... I’m talking about adoption.
Could you adopt my mom and younger sibling too? I can't just live comfortably in such a nice home.
And… … Also… … Dad… … When you come back… … Will you be able to adopt me too?” - From the text

Ji-hoon, who suddenly became Butler Kim, is a brave and warm-hearted boy who embarked on an extreme part-time job with the belief that everything would be fine if he just returned to the Gangnam apartment where he used to live.
However, the kids in his class give Ji-hoon the nickname "Gangnam Foodie" because he is obsessed with Gangnam.
From the title to the story, the name 'Gangnam' appears frequently, sharply satirizing the image that the region of 'Gangnam' represents in Korean society today.
Whether it's a cat or a human, the most important thing in the end is a sincere heart and an open attitude toward oneself and others.

Ji-hoon is a strong and determined boy who tries to overcome his problems on the outside, but he has been trying hard to hide his true feelings by pretending not to want friends.
Then Ji-hoon meets CEO Kangnam, and grows from a cat-loving butler Kim to a creative content creator PD Kim, and even to a CEO who warmly embraces Kangnam-nyang, who has taken off his dress and become a cat grandpa.
The process of Ji-hoon taking each step towards his new dream of becoming a producer, not to make money, and breaking down the solid walls he had built up and bravely opening his heart to those around him is depicted in a heartwarming way.
The friendship that blossomed subtly between the two, surpassing their previous imagination, becomes a large seed that reaches out to another world in need, embracing each other's delicate wounds hidden by pride.

Self-made millionaire YouTuber Kangnamnyang offers a heartwarming life philosophy to the masses.

“Don’t talk about the bitterness of life in front of me.
“You still don’t know the taste of bitter claws.” - From the text

Every single word of the mature words of CEO Kangnam, who rose to star YouTuber status by breaking the iron rule of the cat world that 'cats never suffer', has a deeper flavor the more you chew on it.
Although he is only twelve years old, he is a grandpa cat who is equivalent to a sixty-year-old human, and he displays mature insight without any filter.
Because he endured his days as a hungry stray cat, he has a special affection for stray cats.
The reward for dreams and hard work that Kangnam Nyang, who has achieved success through hardship, says is not wealth or fame, but “opening your eyes to see what is invisible, and opening your ears to hear what is inaudible.”

To Ji-hoon, who thought money was more important than dreams, he shrugs his shoulders and boasts about his popularity out of the blue, saying, “Suffering from money is the easiest suffering.” But then he sadly adds that the life of a stray cat, where just surviving day to day is a miracle, is truly a miracle.
He tells us in a cheerful and refreshing tone that if we have a home, if our family is still alive, and if we can leisurely enjoy the sunshine that comes down 'for free', then we should be thankful for that life. He gives us words with deep meaning.
The small truths of life that we take for granted and easily forget, that we can easily overlook, are reminded of us again through the bouncy, cheerful voice of a cat.

It's also worth considering the extremely human-centric world seen from a cat's perspective.
In a society where people are thoroughly defined and categorized from a human perspective, those who cannot speak out are bound to be the weak.
It leaves us with a question that requires deep consideration: what can we do for stray cats, who have been despised and deprived of their homes, and for the small beings who are pushed into the shadows of our society, who resemble stray cats?
