Into the book
1.
Scientists who explored Antarctica
- “We almost died and came back to life!”
Cherry, Bill, and Buddy struggled for five weeks across Antarctica, where winds gusted at 100 kilometers per hour.
We had to pull two huge sleds carrying tents, sleeping bags, food, scientific equipment, etc., which were incredibly heavy.
The three of them tied the two sleds together and pulled them together, or when it was too difficult, they each pulled one sled at a time.
To make matters worse, the sun doesn't rise in Antarctica in winter, and since flashlights hadn't been invented before, we walked in pitch darkness.
The expedition's clothing was thickly covered with ice, and their reindeer-fur sleeping bags were frozen solid, making it difficult to crawl into them each night.
Even though the temperature dropped to minus 60 degrees, the three encouraged and consoled each other.

2.
The adventurer who traveled around the world in a wheelchair
- “If you put your mind to it, nothing is impossible!”
Rick Hansen was in a car accident when he was 15.
I had an accident on my way back from fishing and my life changed completely.
I was paralyzed from the waist down and had to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair.
Before Rick got injured, his dream was to travel the world by bicycle.
Rick decided not to let his accident stop him from pursuing his dreams and eventually became a successful wheelchair athlete.
He became a world champion in the wheelchair marathon and went on to win six more medals at the Paralympics.
Rick planned an adventure that would take him 40,000 kilometers across 34 countries in his wheelchair to raise money for spinal cord injury treatment.

3.
Sherpa who climbed Mount Everest 17 times
- “Start training from a young age.
“Above all, you must cultivate patience.”
Lakpa had six sisters and two brothers.
Nine-year-old Lakpa went to school as soon as the sun rose.
It took four hours to walk.
After school, I walked home for another four hours.
When I got home, it was dark night.
One day, special guests came to school.
They were none other than the heroes of the Lakpa, Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary.
Lakpa listened carefully to the stories of people who climbed the highest mountain in the world.
And I started dreaming of becoming like them.
Rockpa was very excited to see the heroes.
I started studying English right away because I needed it to become a mountaineering guide.
The opportunity has finally arrived.
Thanks to my uncle, Lakpa started helping mountaineers at Everest Base Camp.
At the age of 21, Lakpa guided a couple from Yugoslavia to the summit of the world's highest peak.
At that time, I didn't know about Rockpa.
The fact that I will be climbing this special place 16 more times.
And the fact that not many people had climbed Everest before him.

Publisher's Review
The adventurers' brave challenges and exciting adventure stories!

《The Great Adventurers》 contains the stories of 20 adventurers who have bravely challenged themselves and pushed their limits in various fields, including scientists, travelers, sherpas, underwater explorers, and astronauts.
The stories of people who seem to be the least adventurous, such as people who suddenly set out on a journey while living ordinary lives, a paraplegic, a teenage girl, a grandmother in her 60s, and an octogenarian, who set out on a journey and achieved their dreams, give ordinary people the courage and encouragement to start right away if they have something they love.

“You don’t need any special talent or genius to go on an adventure.
Anyone can go on an adventure.”

The story of heroes introduced by the great adventurer himself.

《The Great Adventurers》 is a short and entertaining story written by Alastair Humphreys, Adventurer of the Year in 2012, about adventurers he considered heroes in his childhood.

Author Humphreys was living an ordinary life when he went on an adventure around the world on his bicycle, and has since become an adventurer, writer, and lecturer.
I explored the unknown like Debra Murphy and Ibn Battuta, followed in the footsteps of Laurie Lee inspired by his books, crossed the scorching deserts of Wilfred Cesisir, and even took the astronaut test like Michael Collins.
Humphreys says he's living a magical life doing what he loves, inspired by the heroic stories he read as a child.
So, I've chosen 20 heroes in particular to share with readers the emotions I felt.
Humphreys says that seeing heroes inspires us and motivates us to work hard to achieve our dreams.
And he became an example of someone who lived the life of a real adventurer and achieved his dreams.

Excellent illustrations and a rich composition

The illustrations, which were selected for the 2017 Bologna Children's Book Fair illustration exhibition, are excellent enough to make the content of the text more realistic.
Additionally, the composition that makes you feel like you are going on an adventure adds to the fun.
Unlike traditional biographies that cover the life of a great person from birth to death, this book contains dramatic moments or the most important moments of each character's adventure, showing that anyone can become a hero if they have even a little courage.

Additionally, the text is richly composed of equipment needed for adventure, food eaten during the journey, and famous quotes, journeys, and diaries of adventurers.
And finally, the author Humphreys gives us a moving and instructive lesson by explaining why he considers them heroes.
