Book Introduction
A word from MD
Essential Words for a Beautiful Life
Language is the house of being.
This is why we need to speak beautiful language to live a good life.
This book introduces about 750 wonderful words made up of pure Korean words.
Rather than a rigid dictionary-style structure, the meaning of words is conveyed through the story of author Shin Hyo-won's life.
October 14, 2025. Min-gyu Son, Humanities PD
Broadcaster Lee Geum-hee and writer Kang Won-guk strongly recommend
ㆍNew work by bestselling author Shin Hyo-won, who sold 280,000 copies

“What a sweet and gentle Korean book!”

Richer and more detailed emotions and sensations
Make speech and writing more accurate and colorful
28 keywords, approximately 750 pure Korean words

A book called “Words We Loved,” which is like a warm greeting delivered in pure Korean, has been published.
This project began with the idea that it would be nice to have a Korean book that is easy to read and enjoyable, rather than a dictionary or textbook.
In line with this purpose, Shin Hyo-won, a Korean language education expert with 21 years of experience and a best-selling author with 280,000 copies sold, categorizes the senses and emotions that blossom in life into 28 thematic keywords and introduces approximately 750 words that we have loved and will love in the future.

It is not simply a book of words.
This is a warm essay that explores how a single word can touch our emotions and lives, the emotions and atmosphere contained within that word, and then shares pure Korean words related to that topic.
Here, as in the recommendation of author Kang Won-guk, “a poetry exhibition condensed into a single piece of writing” is presented, allowing one to slowly savor the Korean language as if reading a poem or taking a walk.

Above all, this is a book where you can encounter the beauty of pure Korean words that shine for a long time, instead of words that become popular for a short time and then quickly disappear, such as abbreviations, new words, and foreign words.
Words like 'flower sickness', 'feeling good', 'feeling good', and 'feeling good' are hard to forget once you hear them, and once you know them, they have the power to make you want to use them.
Instead of memorizing words and blaming them for lack of literacy and vocabulary, you will mutter them in your mind, feeling them.
Words that we like so much add dignity to our speech, writing, and life.
It is full of beautiful sentences that are worth copying, like announcer Lee Geum-hee's recommendation, which says, "It is a text that allows a glimpse into the realm of human thought and imagination, a text that AI cannot write."

Into the book
While reading the book, sometimes the dazzlingly cheerful pure Korean words, and sometimes the coldly poignant pure Korean words, will try to light a bright fire in your heart.
Whispering to us that we had such precious moments, such distinct sensations, such full hearts.
Now, your own unique world has begun to open up.
Here, words of affectionate greeting are quietly waiting for you.
The words we've loved, and the words we'll love in the future, are waiting here to open up your world.
Mumble your own words without anyone knowing.
Today, the lights of joy and sorrow will turn on one by one, brightening your world.

--- p.9

The underlined sentences that came out after a long time contain images of me from long ago.
The thoughts in my head change frequently and often become lies, but the underlined lines in the book are honest.
Why did I underline this sentence back then?
I was quiet and speechless at that time, and it was hard. I wanted to be that kind of person, that's how I felt. I meet my old self in silence.
The underline I draw today is different from the underline I drew yesterday.
My feelings, which change subtly, are revealed in the underline without any embellishment.
There are times when I feel unfamiliar and embarrassed by my old feelings that come out from underlining, but that's okay.
As the underlining increases between the previous and next sentences, I will become a better person, a more beautiful person.
That's okay, that fact won't change.

--- p.27

Love blossoms between close and intimate people.
What do you call this kind of relationship? It's called 'omsal'.
'He and I had so much in common that we quickly became mates,' he said.
Love also has a generous heart.
When we treat someone younger or more inexperienced than us with love, we can be forgiving of their mistakes.
A pure Korean word that can be used when treating someone with love and generosity is 'nendahada'.
You can write something like, 'My child's homeroom teacher treated the children like her own children all year long.'
What words can you use when you're filled with warmth and love? In this case, you use "dotopda."
If you have the warm and generous love of Dotaun, you feel safe no matter where you are or what you do.
I want to live with a loving heart.
Instead of having a heavy heart that hates and blames someone, I want to live with a warm heart, loving who we are now, and being kind and gentle.
With an infinitely light and bright heart.

--- p.71

Just thinking about the love of 50,000 years ago, when no one had sought a reason for existence, warmed my heart.
How much depth of loyalty must there be in that gentle, harmless warmth that opens one's heart without reason or judgment?
What do I think are the values?
How have I judged my own worth and that of others by such shallow standards and according to such shallow needs?
We are precious and valuable for a thousand reasons that are not obvious.
Since it is not clear, there is no need to go out of your way to find out the reason.
You and I are next to each other, so we pat each other's backs and hug each other.
Sending warmth to the angels I met without knowing it.
That warmth will be our whole life.

--- p.113

There are many things around us that are precious because they are 'small', although they are often overlooked and passed by without being noticed.
Just remembering it makes me feel that way.
Ultimately, the scenes that remain in your memory for a long time are not the grand and special days.
Perhaps it is because our lives are a collection of small things.
There is a passage in James Salter's The Great Spoonful:
“Life is a meal.
Life is the weather.
Lunch served on a checkered tablecloth, and the smell of cigarettes.
“It is brie cheese, yellow apples, and a knife with a wooden handle.” It means that our lives are made up of small, insignificant things that we pass by without even noticing.
Perhaps that is why the word 'small' seems to contain something more precious than anything else.
The word 'small' contains a precious and cute loveliness.

--- p.174

"Because it's difficult and dangerous to go up." The student's words lingered in my mind again.
That's right.
The top was so dangerous.
I hurt you in the midst of comfort, and I was hurt in return.
I'll have to find some comfort that's pretty good, even if it's not perfect.
We must start with the fact that there is no way to avoid the sadness that comes crashing down on us in a haphazard and uneven manner.
We must accept that when grief strikes, we cannot help but walk deep into it, and that each of us needs a different clock speed to endure the place where grief arises and leaves us.
Even if someone were to loudly express their sorrow, we have no right to consume their sorrow.

Publisher's Review
"A book that gives a glimpse into the thoughts and imagination that AI cannot express" - Broadcaster Lee Geum-hee
"A book I think of more every year on Hangeul Day" - Author Kang Won-guk

“Language is the material that shapes our lives.”
Adding dignity to my words, writings, and my life
The world of gentle and harmless pure Korean

We often think of language as simply a means of communication.
But some languages or words completely open up a person's world and become materials that create a more beautiful life.
This book is an attempt to discover the pure Korean language that lives and breathes within us who use 'Hangeul', and to revive those words and love them for a longer time.
This is because delicate pure Korean language touches the heart first, makes sentences shine, and enables dignified communication.

In that respect, this book has the special quality of breaking down the distance we have toward pure Korean, which “seems somehow lacking in sophistication and something only special people would use.”
Putting aside the objective and cool-headed perspective, the author's words, drawn from everyday life, warm our hearts and disarm our stereotypes about pure Korean.
It captures the narrative and emotion of transforming “words that are pretty but I don’t think I’ll ever use” into “words I’ve already lived through,” and vividly shows that scenes from life soon become scenes of language.

“I never knew that our perspective and thoughts on our language could be this deep and warm.
This book is filled with the author's boundless love for the Korean language.
The recommendation, “This is a book that I think of more every year on Hangeul Day,” is absolutely right.

New linguistic inspiration for young people,
A book that helps adults regain their sense of language

The foundation of the ability to read and write ultimately begins with words.
Just knowing and using one word accurately changes the depth of expression and broadens the scope of understanding.
As you follow the context of the new yet beautiful pure Korean words used in this book, your vocabulary will become stronger and your literacy skills will expand.
It is not a dictionary-style information transmission, but rather pure Korean words that seep into the heart through stories and emotions.

In particular, the words in books help us express our emotions and sensations more richly and delicately, and our speech and writing more accurately and colorfully.
For example, a person who is 'old-fashioned' can be expressed as a 'tight' person who is overly upright, and a 'tough' person who is so upright that he is inflexible.
This reminds us of the existence of such diverse expressions in our language, such as ‘monjonhada’, ‘deulrungseureopda’, ‘saesiltteolda’, ‘doeyangdoeyanghada’, ‘deuldeolda’, and ‘geoksilgeoksilhada’, which are expressions that express personality.

I realize that the author's words, "If we could embrace all these words, how much more densely the world we see and feel would expand," are sincere.
This book provides new linguistic inspiration to young people and revives and enriches the sense of language that adults have been missing.

A neat and beautiful essay
A practical book with a vast list of pure Korean words

The greatest strength of this book lies in its easy-to-read yet elegant prose.
Author Shin Hyo-won, who has demonstrated solid and exemplary writing skills in everything from children's books to vocabulary books for adults, has significantly narrowed the distance between herself and her readers by revealing intimate and personal stories for the first time in this book.
I lovingly developed an essay centered around a representative topic that brought that word to mind, and tried to include as many pure Korean words related to the topic as possible.
There are a whopping 750 words, but only some of them are included in the table of contents.
Example sentences have also been added, and the pure Korean meanings are basic.
It is practical enough to keep by your side and refer to whenever you write.

Readers will learn expressions and words that can add elegance to their writing and speaking from the author's powerful writing.
You will experience an expansion of your expressive power and vocabulary, and you will also feel the vitality and warmth of how pure Korean language vividly and sensually portrays the world.
Still, if you're looking for another reason to read this book, this book will be helpful to you.

- If you want to add emotion and class to your speaking and writing
- If you want to know the delicacy and richness of our language
- If you are always worried about your vocabulary
- If you like round words and neat sentences
- Lastly, if you want just one Korean book

Perhaps there are words in this book that were born to comfort you.
