I hope what you write to me moves you.
A thousand words, sentences that squeeze through the cracks of thought, and a crystallization of eons of time.
Lee Eo-ryeong's words

A person's writing contains his or her life.
A book containing Lee Eo-ryeong's entire life story has come to us.
Lee Eo-ryeong, who read and wrote tirelessly throughout his life until his death in February 2022, leaving behind numerous works, said that writing was something he had always wanted to do.
However, he added that if what he wrote to me reaches someone else, makes them feel it, and moves them, then that is 'emotion' and it would be a great joy.
This is the virtuous cycle of writing that has been brought to life through the pages and screens of the world, and it may be the most valuable legacy that those who have passed away can leave to those living today.
Now we have the opportunity to borrow his intelligence.
It is time for readers who cherish Lee Eo-ryeong, as well as those who did not know her, to listen to her words, feel her thoughts, and embark on a journey to explore how to live this foggy world and the life given to them.

Into the book
The mind is the index of the spirit.

--- p.12

The world always shows a new world only when we overcome things that are so painful that they are almost fatal.
(…) If you have tears, it means you have a soul, it means you have love, it means you love someone and miss them deeply, and it means you regret, tears shed for others, not for yourself, are as beautiful as a rainbow that appears after the rain stops.

--- p.13

If you do something with values and vision, no matter how menial the task, it becomes an activity.
In other words, the answer to our actions lies within ourselves.

--- p.16

Justice varies from position to position.
But in love there is no such thing as position.
There is no difference between love in the South and love in the North.
That's why we keep talking about love instead of justice.

--- p.22

Every time you think or act, look for the end result.
If you follow your dreams, the knots of your heart, and the knots of your life, you will see the earth, the sky, and the world will become much more beautiful.

--- p.26

A person who has not felt the cold of life does not know what love is.
The most unfortunate person in the world is probably the one who has never been sick in his entire life.

--- p.30~31

Son, have you seen the gray hairs growing one by one on your father's black hair?
Have you ever seen your father's lips, which are momentarily angry and then break into a cowardly smile?
Have you ever seen your fingers clenched into a fist and then opened so weakly as if you were holding a Go stone?

--- p.45

Only while shedding tears can a human being be pure.
Yet, people are all embarrassed about that purity.

--- p.50

To call a name is to awaken what is asleep, to bring near what is far away, and to make the silent speak.
--- p.58

Why is the morning so beautiful?
Because there is still darkness in that light.
Why is the sunset so beautiful?
Because there is still light in the coming darkness.
A beautiful world where light and darkness exist in equal proportions.
That is the space that Koreans have been waiting for for a long time.
A pleasant time where digital and analog meet, this is Korean time.

--- p.95

All citizens share information and live together.
That's democracy.
The common characteristic of ruined countries, from monarchies to Nazism and communism, is that they blinded the people.
The era of openness does not only mean the opening of markets.
Openness is about everyone opening their eyes and seeing a bright world.

--- p.111

If you want something that doesn't roll around and is easy to hold, a six-pointed pencil is the best choice, somewhere between a circle and a square.
So, whether in the past or present, six-pointed pencils are the most common.
They say that living in harmony is harmonious, but if you only assert yourself and have no self-assertion, you will become stubborn and it will be difficult to live in the world.
It's not even a square pencil.
It's not even a round pencil.
Write my life with six sharp pencils.

--- p.134

You are not water or fire, but a cauldron between water and fire, a harmonious cauldron that beautifully prevents conflict and opposition by creating an interface between two opposing values.
I have to become 'me' as an interface.
--- p.342

Publisher's Review
It was the last project that I wanted to leave behind for future generations.
The essence of essences extracted from hundreds of works
Reading Lee Eo-ryeong in one volume

Although it has been three years since he passed away, Lee Eo-ryeong still lives and breathes as one of our country's great intellectuals.
Until the end of his life, he pondered the physical and spiritual worlds with unceasing curiosity, and the results were published in hundreds of books.
『The Words of Eoryeong』 was Eoryeong's long-standing meaning.
Since the 1970s, he had received several requests to transcribe Lee Eo-ryeong's thoughts, but he declined on the grounds that it was too early. Around seven years before his death, he had hoped to compile into a single volume a selection of writings that could be called the "essence of Lee Eo-ryeong's words" from among his hundreds of works.
“I hope that through that one book, future readers will easily understand the intellectual explorations I have been pursuing throughout my life.”
To realize this final plan, numerous meetings and selection processes were held, and it took nearly three years to complete the book.
And finally, this book, which can be called the definitive edition of Lee Eo-ryeong, was born.
This was possible because he was a writer who thought in his own language and left behind a vast body of work.
Lee Eo-ryeong reappears before us through this one book.

From his life to my life
Deep and broad thoughts packed into short words

Lee Eo-ryeong loved our language deeply.
He breathed life into our language and writing throughout his life, describing the world inside and outside himself with the simplicity and wonder of our language.
Lee Eo-ryeong's excellence is particularly evident in his short writings.
His perspective on the world is unique.
As Kang In-sook, who is in charge of the Lee Eoryeong Memorial Foundation, said, “For a short piece of writing to shake people’s inner self, it must have depth and breadth in its implications.”
This book is packed with the deep and broad thinking that only someone who has thought and studied with their own head can possess, under the themes of mind, humanity, civilization, objects, language, art, religion, us, and creation.
No matter which page you open, it is full of writings that can be read smoothly and concisely.
To allow readers to appreciate the text with a sense of spaciousness, we have designed pages that display only one piece of text on each side. We have also organized the keywords and sources in the text into an index so that readers can check the original text of Lee Eo-ryeong's words and explore Lee Eo-ryeong's world more deeply.
These words of truth, written with the breath of Lee Eo-ryeong, will enrich our minds and lives by expanding the realm of boundless thought for a longer period and further with the breath of the reader.

A treasure trove of language containing the truth of the world
Lee Eo-ryeong's last sincere gift

We call art that continues to have new influences even as times change and people change, classic.
Lee Eo-ryeong's writing is a classic of our time.
In a rapidly changing world, we and this society need ways to move beyond survival.
As the greatest intellectual and great adult of his time, Lee Eo-ryeong shows insight that penetrates the times.
Every time I open the bookshelf, I am confronted with his vibrant spirit, and every moment brings new insights.
Teacher Lee Eo-ryeong.
Many of his disciples and readers dreaded the days after his departure.
It may be because I always sought out a teacher whenever I felt afraid and anxious about a path I had not yet taken.
They say that people die the way they lived.
Lee Eo-ryeong did not put the book down until the very end.
He never stopped talking about the world.
He, who had lived with the light of life in his entire body until the very end of his life, returned to the bright light of February in the same way he had lived.
He is gone, but his spirit lives on vividly in his words.
This book is the last gift that Lee Eo-ryeong gives us.
As someone who has lived before, he speaks of what he has seen, heard, felt, and realized, sometimes firmly and sometimes gently, and pats his shoulder to live life as it is, experiencing and feeling life as a gift to the fullest.
His eyes will continue to shine brightly like a lighthouse illuminating our path ahead.
