Into the book
Consciousness and reality are essentially the same.
Consciousness is the fundamental entity of all experience.
Everything we experience is done through consciousness, and without consciousness no experience can exist.
All entities (body, mind, world) are phenomena that appear and disappear within consciousness, and are consciousness itself.
Consciousness is neither spatially nor temporally limited.
Consciousness is infinite and includes all beings and events.
Body, mind, and the world are but temporary illusions that appear and disappear in consciousness.
Consciousness itself is the only entity that remains eternally unchanging.
The non-theoretical view that the concepts of time and space are ultimately created within consciousness is increasingly accepted by many modern physicists and biologists.
That is, time and space are biological entities created by human consciousness.
--- From the Translator's Note

Consciousness creates an appearance that matches its beliefs.
In fact, the belief in oneself as a limited fragment and the appearance of the world as a solid, individual entity are created together as a complete, mutually corroborating whole.
William Blake expressed this understanding by saying, “Man sees, because he is.”
This could also be expressed as, “The world appears because consciousness sees itself that way.”
It could be said to be an almost perfect conspiracy created by the consciousness' own freedom and creativity.
Consciousness has the power to make the world appear to us according to the perspective from which we see ourselves as fragments.

--- From “Consciousness Shines in All Experiences”

There is no object that exists in a clearly deep sleep.
That's why it's peaceful there.
Since deep sleep and peace always coexist, we can say that peace exists in deep sleep.
But it is not true to say that peace lies in deep sleep.
Because we don't experience two things there.
Rather, deep sleep is peace.
If tranquility is identical with deep sleep, and if deep sleep, as we have seen, is the presence of consciousness without objectivity, then we must conclude that tranquility is in consciousness, and that this tranquility and consciousness are one.
We acknowledge this experience every time we say we slept well.
This expression comes from experience.
Deep sleep has no object, so peace cannot depend on an object.
Ultimately, peace means being independent of any state or condition of the body, mind, or the world.
--- From “Peace and happiness are inherent in consciousness”

The reality of all experience is the reality of consciousness.
Objects do not appear merely in consciousness.
It appears as consciousness.
Consciousness does not simply witness all experiences.
Express yourself as an experience.
Everything that is experienced is experienced by consciousness, through consciousness, in consciousness, and as consciousness.
Consciousness witnesses, experiences, and expresses itself at every moment.
And when the object does not exist, it just remains as it is.
That's it, that's all.
This is what exists here and now.
--- From "What We Seek Is Us"

The water in the sea rises and gushes out, forming waves, then surges for a while before calming down again and becoming the sea.
But it has never been water for even a moment.
Likewise, every object, every experience, arises in consciousness, takes on its own form, does its own work, and then gives its name and form back to the ocean of presence that remains within itself.
Then it takes the shape of the next wave.
Waves give name and shape to water.
When the wave disappears, only the name and form disappear.
Water always remains the same.
--- From "Consciousness only knows itself"

The initial exploration to find the nature of experience can be called the path of discernment.
This leads to the realization that “I am nothing.”
A deeper exploration at the level of the body and the world can be said to be the path of love.
This leads to the realization that “I am everything.”
On the path of discernment, we discover what we are not.
On the path of love we discover who we are.
This discovery is a revelation of every moment.
I can't put it into words.
This is the true 'not knowing', where nothing is known and yet everything is embraced.
--- From “Consciousness is Freedom Itself”

Happiness is not an experience of consciousness.
Happiness is a state of consciousness.
So, it is said that joy has no cause.
Whenever consciousness stops running away from itself through desire (or fear), it experiences itself as this happiness or peace.
This is why the desire for happiness is universal.
Happiness lies within the consciousness of each of us.
The feeling of knowing oneself is happiness.
Once we clearly see that it is not the fulfillment of desires but the end of desires that reveals our inner happiness, we no longer seek out objects that will make us happy.
We may desire an object that will express happiness, but this happiness does not depend on an object.
--- From "Love in Search of Itself"

Consciousness is naturally one with all things.
It is one with the totality of experience.
But sometimes consciousness contracts itself, shrinks itself and withdraws into the body.
This self-contraction requires constant maintenance.
If left unmanaged, the self-contraction will gradually release and consciousness will return to its natural state.
The two main ways in which consciousness manages its own self-contraction as an external, individual entity are to desire and to fear.
The moment a desire is satisfied, the desire ends.
The end of desire ends with the management of self-contraction, and as a result, consciousness returns to itself.
That is, it experiences its own endless nature again.
This experience is called happiness.
--- From "Natural State"

Publisher's Review
A 'direct path' to immediate relief from life's suffering.
-The second story of mindfulness meditation, translated by Professor Kim Joo-hwan from "Inner Communication."

The second book in the 'Essence of Meditation' series by world-renowned meditation master Rupert Spira, who sparked a craze for mindfulness meditation in Korea with 'Awareness of Mindfulness', has been published in translation by Professor Kim Joo-hwan (author of 'Inner Communication').

The Essence of Meditation series is a compilation of meditations Spira has conducted in her own circles and retreats, exploring the essential non-theoretical understanding that lies at the heart of all great religious and spiritual traditions.

This book is a collection of reflections and conversations on the nature of experience.
Spira, who has studied and practiced meditation in the orthodox Advaita Vedanta tradition for over 20 years, guides us through the 'Direct Path', a concise and intuitive approach to exploring the essence of consciousness and experience through 'Non-Dualism'.
The 'Direct Way' offers a way to immediately recognize the essence of the self without complex practices.
Through this, readers can realize their true nature, escape the suffering of life, and find inner peace and happiness.

The source of all experience is consciousness, and consciousness and reality are one.
A full-fledged exploration of 'consciousness' from the perspective of non-dualism.

"The Transparency of Things" is not simply a story about 'things'.
This book is a profound exploration of consciousness as the subject that perceives all things in the world, and the way we experience and exist in ourselves and the world.
It deals with the nature of consciousness as revealed through its relationship with objects, and explores how consciousness interacts with all things in the world and how we experience and understand them.
So this book is a story about experience, but at the same time it is a story about consciousness.

ㆍThings refer to the body, the mind, and everything in the world, and the fact that these are 'transparent' means that they exist and do not exist at the same time.
ㆍThe object is one of the ways in which consciousness knows itself.
ㆍConsciousness means ‘experiencing’ and is the source and substance of all experiences.

ㆍAll things are expressions of consciousness, and all things in the world exist within consciousness.
ㆍOur experience is one perfect whole; consciousness, thought, sensation, and perception are one experience.
ㆍConsciousness shifts from “I am something” to “I am nothing” and then back to “I am everything.”
Through this, we move from the path of discrimination to the path of unity and love.

The book repeatedly demonstrates that material objects and the external world are actually merely expressions of consciousness, and that consciousness and reality are essentially identical.
Objective experiences are created by consciousness, and all objective experiences take place within consciousness.
This is the core of the theory of fire.
The spy explains the essence of consciousness and experience in everyday, ordinary language, without any academic concepts, but in an extraordinary and beautiful way.
Professor Kim Joo-hwan's elaborate translation here helps readers more easily understand the philosophical depth and practical insight of the theory of fire.

The truth we seek already lies within us.
-The path to true peace, tranquility, and happiness

Spyra says, “Consciousness is ‘I’, and consciousness itself is the truth.”
It emphasizes that realizing that all things in the world and oneself are essentially one is the path to true peace and happiness.
"The Transparency of Things" is a guidebook that helps readers look at their consciousness and life from a new perspective.
This book is not simply a philosophical guide, but a practical tool for transforming lives, leading readers into mindfulness meditation and inner reflection.
As Spira said, I hope this book reveals that in a life filled with hardship and suffering, the light that leads us to peace always resides within us.

“The Transparency of Things” invites readers to look deeply into their own experiences and directly experience the essence of consciousness.
Through this book, you will not only understand the essence of consciousness, but also learn how to implement it in your life.
In this way, you will be able to look at your essential identity and your relationship with the world from a new perspective.
Through this book, I was able to see myself and the world more clearly.
I hope this change will happen to you, my readers, too.
I hope this book will bring readers a deep sense of inner communication and an empty freedom.” - From the translator’s note by Kim Joo-hwan
