Building the mental strength that keeps me alive

When you think of a psychiatrist, you think of someone who has stronger mental strength and patience than others.
To listen to and counsel the inner stories of countless people every day, psychiatrists must also take care of and examine their own inner selves.
What helped me stay centered during my nearly 20 years as a psychiatrist was ‘running.’
Running has been a great help in my inner reflection as a doctor, and has also helped me listen to and deeply understand the hearts of others.
Even now, I run every morning and gain the motivation to care for the mental health of those who are tired and worn out.

The author likens running to a dynamic meditation or prayerful state.
Because while running, an inner channel opens up where you can talk to yourself.
Running won't suddenly change your life, but when you lack mental strength, physical strength can give you the strength to survive.
If you're lost and wandering about, just go out and run.
The joy of immersion felt while running provides a break from the rigidity of the mind and daily life.
The fear I felt at the starting line soon disappears, and as I run to the end, I meet another me waiting for me at the finish line.
After the run, I will think about what kind of person I am and how I want to live.
The author says that while life cannot be re-lived, a marathon can be started and finished again with the will of oneself.
Would you rather finish a race without even starting at the starting line or running to the finish line? If you lead the race solely on your own strength, you'll soon find your way out of life.

Publisher's Review
A psychiatrist who runs a marathon
How did someone who only sat and studied end up running?

The author went running when he was staying up all night studying for exams due to the anxiety of failing a grade during medical school, when he was having a hard time with his senior professor, and when he felt inadequate during counseling.
I relaxed by moving my body and observed my thoughts and feelings.
I didn't know the benefits of running, but looking back, it became my own personal prescription.
So, in the introduction section of the medical staff on one side of the examination room, they introduce their marathon experience along with their clinical experience.
The marathon is a sport that requires endurance and mental strength, so the idea was born from the desire for patients to feel comfortable speaking out.
Like the author, a psychiatrist, many people hope that exercise or running will serve as a way to look into their inner selves.
You might think that the author would have extraordinary mental strength because he is a psychiatrist, but he also gave up halfway through without being able to finish.
Although he didn't finish the race, he says he learned how to find balance in life and that although he had regrets, he had no regrets.
Perhaps, the process of developing a strong attitude toward life can be found in running.
Perhaps that's why, even if I haven't run before, as I read the author's writing, I feel like I'm running along with him, and I feel like I want to muster up the courage and run too.

Let's just live, let's just run
The best thing is to just run

Listening to the author's running journey and the stories of many different people made me realize that life isn't just about me.
Even minor incidents can cause post-traumatic stress disorder, and overload in work and interpersonal relationships can lead to burnout.
Sometimes, without even realizing it, your mental illness can deepen.
What should we do in such a situation? The author, a psychiatrist, says, "Life is a cycle of joy and sorrow, happiness and depression."
Rather than making a relative evaluation of good and bad, it calmly prescribes to just live each day by acknowledging it.
To some, simply living might sound pathetic.
But just doing it is proof that you are more immersed than anyone else, and ironically, it is said that you can continue to do it for a longer time and enjoy it more.
I hope that you accept happiness as a good thing and depression as a bad thing, not as a result of achieving your goals, but as a process, and that you can discover your own hidden strides.
Sometimes you can find comfort in knowing that it's okay to walk and to rest when you get tired.
You will gain the strength to move forward without being swayed by the gaze and standards set by others.

Completed over 50 marathons, completed world marathons!
Let's believe in the effort I've put in so far.

Life is often compared to a marathon.
Isn't it because the tension and fear at the starting line, the conflict between wanting to give up while running and still wanting to keep going, and the sense of accomplishment and immersion when reaching the finish line are similar to the process of life?
So, the most important question is what mindset you have to overcome the difficulties of the 42.195km long course.
The author has completed over 50 marathons, including the Berlin, Boston, Tokyo, Chicago, and London marathons.
There were times when I wanted to give up, and I wondered what I was doing by running like this.
After the competition, they suffer from severe aftereffects and go through a period of extreme lethargy.
However, after safely enduring that time, you prepare for the next competition again.
Anyone who has ever accomplished something on their own, even if it wasn't running, knows.
I know that what I'm doing now is the best I can do, and I'm taking each step knowing that I'll feel a sense of satisfaction when it's over.
Running also has an end and is fair to everyone.
If you just start, you can face life again, and when you finish, you will have the courage to start anew.
If you can at least feel free while running, you'll find there's no reason not to run.
