"And yet life goes on."

Chapter 1.
On the brevity of life

The short time given to us
The real problem is wasting your life.
“We only truly live part of our lives.”
No one is the sole master of himself.
You shouldn't ask others to do what you can't do yourself.
It's like wasting what should be saved
How much time do you spend solely on yourself?
Time passes by as if it will last forever
The illusion that life will go on
Luck can collapse when it cannot overcome itself.
The vain and sweet hope of living only for oneself
A great man's only wish is to enjoy peaceful days.
When what you boast about becomes a curse
Complaints about not being able to rest even for a moment
Complaining doesn't change anything.
Even if we are given a thousand years
People who are so busy drinking that they don't even have time to catch their breath
How to live properly, how to die properly
Nothing is so precious that we should give up our time.
Time stolen for no reason
Those who are faithful to the present have nothing to lose.
Even if you live a long life, you don't know if you lived well.
Even though I already have the most precious thing in the world
If I could count the time left
Even if you dedicate a part of your life to someone you love
Life flows on without turning or stopping.
Don't give up today for the future
“The brightest days are always the first to run away.”
If you feel uncomfortable when recalling the past
Time flowing through the cracks in my heart
The present is like a flowing current that never stops for a moment.
A short life dragged to death
No matter how short life is given, it is not enough
People who are busy avoiding laziness
People who are busy pursuing pleasure
The only time I truly enjoy leisure is the time I spend philosophizing.
Hospitality from philosophers
Great philosophers teach us how to die well.
Something that does not disappear or diminish over time
We waste our days waiting for the night, and we spend our nights dreading the morning.
Why I Can't Shake Off Anxiety Even in Happy Moments
Luck given by chance is unstable.
Life constantly presents new challenges.
Time to look back on the warehouse of life
Open your mind's eye and explore philosophy.
There is no one more miserable than someone who is busy trying to meet other people's standards.
shameful death
If you can't let go of work until you die
Our life continues to flow

Chapter 2.
About a happy life

First, decide on the direction to happiness.
Stay away from the crowded path
Decide your own path
Have a conversation with yourself
Beware of people who envy you
What you desperately want is right next to you
A life in balance with nature is a happy life.
Lines are expressed in many forms, but in the end they are the same.
You can be happy without trying
Beware of chance luck
The reason of a fool is detrimental to himself.
Pleasure tests us
Happy is he who makes the right judgment.
Pleasure and virtue are different
The best good never changes
Be the master of your life, not a slave to pleasure.
The key is within me
The reason why we hesitate when doing something
Pleasure is not the goal, it's a byproduct.
What do you gain by accumulating virtue?
Happiness comes from moderation, not pleasure.
If you are defeated by a weak enemy
The madness of pleasure
As if throwing out a lame joke every now and then
When laziness is given an honorable name,
Nature cannot afford luxury.
A good patron who hides evil deeds
What better guide is there than reason?
Like a seaman swept away by the waves
The illusion that those who enjoy pleasure are happy
Do not mix evil with the best of good.
Freedom oppressed becomes a slave to chance.
All trials occur according to the laws of nature.
Why be dragged around when you can follow yourself?
The reward that virtue bestows upon us
Good luck to untie the knots that bind life
Why are you just talking nonsense?
I'm just a guy trying to avoid the worst.
Even great men have been criticized
“I lived my life”
The wicked crucify themselves
It's okay if you can't put everything you say into action.
Nature has already given me everything
Even if I fail, if I can say this
Just as sick eyes cannot withstand sunlight,
There is no need to avoid wealth.
The wealthy wise man wields greater influence.
Don't get me wrong, wealth has important value.
Attitude toward wealth
Wisdom does not come from poverty.
A person who deserves to enjoy wealth with dignity
A wise man neither boasts nor hides his wealth.
What excuse would you give to refuse wealth?
You should not give more than you receive.
The good deeds you do will be of great help in times of need.
A wise man does not spread indiscriminately.
Studying doesn't give you perfect wisdom.
Even if it's not good, wealth is useful and good.
If I were given wealth
If possible, it is better to be a conqueror than a prisoner.
I will choose the good things, the things that are easy to get.
Knowing that danger can strike at any time
Any attack would sound like the crying of a poor child.
Those who slander me cannot cause me pain.
Socrates' words
A person who watches a circus without knowing that there is a portrait at home

Chapter 3.
About peace of mind

Don't doubt yourself
Euthymia, a calm and unwavering heart
Reveal my flaws under the bright light
Days of forcing myself to endure leisure
The heart is bound to waver
“Man sets out on a journey to escape from himself.”
It is not our circumstances that trouble us, but our own shortcomings.
If you find something to do yourself, you won't be bored.
Footprints are left where worthy people pass.
We must negotiate before we lay down our weapons.
There are more open places in the world
If you have both arms cut off and cannot hold a weapon, you can encourage your allies by shouting.
You can't protect yourself by hiding your body.
Above all, you must accurately evaluate yourself.
Choose a job that suits your personality and abilities.
You must be especially careful when choosing people.
A true friend is a pleasure to see.
If you hang out with sick people, you'll get sicker.
Avoid people who always complain.
Happy are those who have nothing to lose.
A slave who can live without a master, a master who cannot live without a slave
Frugality will bring wealth
Saving is seeking wealth from oneself, not from fate.
A man who sails with a large sail is bound to encounter a storm.
You shouldn't buy books to show others.
Accepting misfortune brings peace
All humans live tied to something.
There are bound to be cliffs in high places.
We must stop ourselves before fate stops us.
Everything we have is borrowed
We will gladly return anything you borrow.
If you want to live, you will die, and if you want to die, you will live.
Death is a predestined event
Anything that can happen to anyone can happen to anyone.
No matter how much you have, you can't go against fate.
There's no need to worry about things that don't matter.
The habit of wandering around aimlessly and busily
The most difficult person to meet is yourself.
Unexpected things do not happen to wise men.
Believe in yourself, love yourself, and respect yourself.
People who remained dignified and detached even in the face of death
Laugh it off rather than lament it.
Don't be sad to show off to others
Great men become immortal through death.
Don't hide yourself
Mix time alone with time together.
Getting enough rest makes your mind strong and sharp.
Why the festival was created
It's okay to drink alcohol to get drunk sometimes
Only God can leave behind achievements
Take constant care of your mind

Into the book
Don't waste your life trying to show off to others.

I believe that the wisdom of life is a concept inherent entirely in human consciousness.
This is called happiness theory, and happiness theory refers to the technique of living life as happily and enjoyably as possible.
These skills can serve as a guide to becoming a happy being.
However, if we think about this fact purely and objectively (since subjective judgment is important here), we can define it as much better to live a happy life than to become non-existent (the negative form of existence_translator's note) through cool-headed and experienced reflection.
Therefore, from the perspective of the wisdom of life, the reason we are endlessly obsessed with a happy life is not because we fear death, but because we pursue a happy life itself.

--- p.8

The reason so many people born into wealth squander their enormous inheritances so quickly and helplessly is the boredom that comes from a poor and empty mind.
If you are born rich but poor on the inside, you will try to replace your inner wealth with external wealth by accepting anything from outside, but your efforts will be futile.
It's like an old man trying to look younger by borrowing the energy of a girl.
In this way, inner poverty eventually leads to outer poverty.

--- p.25

In everything humans do, the thing they care most about is what other people think.
If we look closely, we can see that half of human worries and fears come from thoughts about other people.
Frequently wounded and pathologically oversensitive, pride is based on vanity and arrogance, as well as on showing off and boasting.
If only these worries and obsessions were not there, luxury would not even be a tenth of what it is now.
All pride, all issues of face, all stubbornness, no matter how different in kind and extent, are rooted in worry and obsession.

--- p.91

"And yet life goes on."

About the shortness of our lives, we can find truth in the words of a great poet:
“We only truly live part of our lives.”
The rest is not life, it's just time passing by.

--- p.20

The reason we fail to notice the most precious thing in the world, time, is because time has no substance.
Time is invisible, so most people treat it as insignificant and let it pass by as if it had no value.
On the other hand, money is considered very precious, so people are willing to provide labor and services in exchange for wages.
But time is wasted as if it were of no use.
A man who has been wasting his time in vain, when death approaches, will finally cling to the doctor's lap and beg him to give up all his possessions if he will prolong his life.
What a contradictory being man is!
--- p.47

When deciding where to go and how to get there, you should seek advice from a seasoned guide who has explored the area beforehand.
Because the journey to happiness is different from any ordinary journey.
For a normal trip, you can easily reach your destination by simply following a well-known route and asking a local for directions.
But on the journey to happiness, the more people you pass by, the more likely it is that you are on the wrong path.

Publisher's Review
“Choose solid loneliness over shallow happiness!”
Schopenhauer's aphorisms on life and wisdom that inspired Nietzsche, Tolstoy, and Einstein

This book corresponds to the short section of Schopenhauer's 『Parerga und Paralipomena』, published in 1851.
'Aphorisms', which were popular among readers, were translated into German and published separately as 'Aphorisms on the Wisdom of Life (Aphorisms zur Lebensweisheit)'. It is a book that stands out for its unique, cheerful style and language about a happy life.
Until now, no other work by Schopenhauer has reached such a wide readership and received such high praise from experts.
And there is a clear reason for this reputation.
Unlike the previous work, which was somewhat difficult and stiff, this book adds to the enjoyment of reading by including a wealth of quotes from philosophers and works from history along with the author's own philosophy on happiness.

This book, which offers enlightenment and entertainment to modern readers despite being nearly 200 years old, deserves to be evaluated as an immortal classic. Preserving the original German text as much as possible, this book will help build intellectual sophistication while also overcoming the lack of philosophical thinking that is often cited as a lack in modern people.
As the book says, "All humans only see the world within the limits of their own understanding and perception," I hope that after reading this book, you will experience a complete shift in how you view the world.

“The life given to us is not short.

“We made it short and wasted it.”
The most realistic and worldly wisdom about human desire and nature.

Seneca, who was considered the greatest intellectual of his time, was given the fateful position of teacher to the young Nero, against his will.
Unable to endure Nero's increasingly severe tyranny, he resigned from his post and devoted himself to writing, but was caught up in a plot to assassinate the emperor and was eventually ordered to commit suicide by his former disciple, Nero, ending his life.
In a time filled with chaos, fear, and madness, Seneca experienced many ups and downs and developed his own attitude toward life, which became the foundation of Seneca's philosophy.
He said, “It is more important to take care of the storehouse of one’s own life than to count the grain in the national treasury,” and found peace of mind and happiness even in the midst of frustration.

He was also very realistic.
Unlike the existing order that insisted only on unconditional integrity and morality, he amassed a huge fortune and proudly declared, "If I had a choice, I would take the good one."
“A wise man will endure illness, but if possible, he will wish to remain healthy.” Under the premise of studying philosophy, he did not deny the natural desires of humans, but rather said that if one accumulates wealth through one’s own abilities and lives by helping others, one can have a greater influence.
This is also in line with the recent donation behavior of the world's wealthy.
The essence of human existence does not change even after two thousand years.
Seneca was the philosopher who understood its essence more accurately than anyone else.
In Seneca's writings, we can find a way to lead a life that is full of confusion.
