“A book that will provide a clue to a ‘meaningful life’ realized through art!”
Kim Jeong-un (cultural psychologist, artist)
Wonjae Jo, the author of the "Corner Art Gallery" series, which broke the stereotype that art is the exclusive domain of the noble and elegant, and guided 400,000 readers into the easy and fun world of art, has returned with the humanities and arts liberal arts book "Life Shines with Art."
This is a new work after about 3 years.
While the previous work focused on the artist's life and work, this book uses art as a medium to discuss 'how to live.'
The author says that what we should truly gain from art is not artistic knowledge, but wisdom for life.
It explores how we should view the boring, repetitive nature of life, what secrets make ordinary life special, what innate talents we possess without effort, and what it means to live as ourselves.
A society where utility and usefulness are judged solely by standardized standards, a harsh and dry world.
There are things that only art can do.
We invite readers on 27 intellectual journeys that will illuminate life with art.

Into the book
No matter how repetitive our daily lives may be, every moment is truly new.
If we exercise our intelligence and strive to be conscious of that truth every moment of every day, things we previously considered dull may come to us with a completely different meaning and beauty that we had not previously noticed.
In this way, flowers with colors, shapes, and fragrances we have never seen or heard of may bloom in our ordinary lives.
That's how art might bloom in our lives.
---From "Are you tired of the repetitive life?"
Life throws us a blank sheet of paper and asks us:
What are you going to draw?
We become brushes in front of the blank sheet of paper that life throws at us.
As we are born and life progresses, we must make our own choices.
What and how to draw on the blank sheet of paper called life.
If life is art, then painting or drawing whatever comes to mind is not the right order.
Moreover, there is a variable in life called time.
If a picture is wrong, you can fix it, but life is not like that.
As time goes by, that's the end of it.
Because it is a one-time thing, you can't just throw it away and start over.
So if you think your life is art, before you get too caught up in figuring out how to paint the tiniest detail, before you obsess over what color to paint next to it, put down your brush and palette.
With a heart as cool as the spring breeze.
And let's take the time to look at the entire 'blank sheet of paper' that is life given to you.
---From "What and How to Draw on the Blank Sheet of Life"
All humans are born as blank slates, ignorant of themselves.
Some people may never know exactly who they are until the day they die.
Someone else chooses to become a chrysalis themselves to find out 'who I am'.
In that chrysalis, some people discover their own answers, break out of the shell, and become butterflies, but some fail.
Of course, if you don't give up despite repeated failures, you can eventually become a butterfly.
There is always a possibility that a caterpillar will break out of its pupa shell and become a butterfly.
It all depends on the larva's choice and effort.
Where are we in that process now?
---From "Have you ever chosen to become a pupa?"
Does laziness really mean doing nothing? No.
It's just that you're not doing 'work'.
I'm just not working, I'm just breathing.
It is alive.
It is choosing to spend time purely breathing and fully enjoying the state of being alive, unbound by any external pressure.
In other words, it is a mind that allows oneself a 'space of time' to not do things that are socially required to be done.
Isn't this the true meaning of laziness?
We can only live artistically when we are lazy.
Only when I allow myself to create a space in my life where I have nothing to do, can I truly feel that I am breathing and alive, and create art.
Yes, that's right.
You can do art.
Can sense, think, and feel.
That's how you can do art.
---From "The Truth of Laziness"
Vincent van Gogh.
When I learned the full extent of his escapades, I felt a certain kinship with him.
Should I say I felt a strong sense of camaraderie? Surely, someone else besides him and me is currently choosing and experiencing this kind of voluntary deviation.
Deciding to break free from the inertia of everyday life by one's own will.
I like to call it 'healthy wandering'.
That deviation, that journey of wandering, may seem unstable to others.
It may be considered an unnecessary act that does not help in making a living.
However, the person who is going through that deviation, that wandering, will come face to face with his true self more clearly at the end of that path.
Ultimately, that deviation on the path of life will become a more powerful force than anything else, allowing you to clearly know, choose, and follow the path you truly desire.

Publisher's Review
“When life feels empty,
“There are things that only art can do!”
Am I living well? Everyone faces this question at least once in their lives.
Build up your resume, get a job, buy a house, work, and run endlessly.
Then, suddenly, when I look back, the thought that there is nothing left comes to mind.
We strive to grow ourselves and take control of our lives in various ways, but the more we do so, the more our hearts feel empty and the more we feel deprived.
The word 'busy' is followed by the word 'empty'.
I think this is a pretty good life, but then a strange question creeps into my mind.
Wonjae Cho, who has been at the forefront of the art field, lowering the threshold of art and meeting readers closely, says that one can find meaning and direction in life through 'art.'
He, who is neither an art major nor an expert, was able to quit his job and pursue what he loves as his career, was able to listen to his inner voice rather than the gaze and judgment of others, and was able to escape from the inertia of life and live each moment feeling alive, all thanks to art.
Through “Life Shines with Art,” he shares the insights he gained through enjoying and experiencing art himself.
The most beautiful answer to the question of how to live
27 dazzling journeys to discover the meaning and value of life
“Every child is an artist.
The question is, 'How will we remain artists when we grow up?'" said Picasso.
Here, the author speaks forcefully, pointing out the portrait of adults of our time who, burdened by roles and responsibilities as they grow up, have lost the artist they were children and are living a life without themselves.
That our lives can become art.
We can all become artists.
This is a matter of “sincere heart” and “sincere action.”
In this book, he introduces over 100 works by artists such as Van Gogh, Cézanne, Munch, Kim Chang-yeol, Lee Ufan, and Jang Wook-jin, who have left us unique works that transcend time and space, and answers the essential question, “How should we live?”
Through his own experiences, he sincerely conveys that art is not far from our lives and that anyone can become an artist.
It naturally changes the perspective of readers who like and enjoy art but have thought of it as separate from their own lives.
It tells us that in order to live the way we want to live, rather than just living the way life comes our way, we must dare to deviate and wander at least once; that no one can do this for us; that we must find our own way; that sometimes we must be lazy enough to escape from social responsibilities and pressures; and that, above all, we must look at every moment anew in order to discover the beautiful and special moments that are scattered throughout life.
That's the secret to making your one and only life into art.
“Making your life a work of art,
“Can anything be more beautiful than this?”
This book does not list artistic knowledge or offer healing or comfort through pictures.
Rather, it directly addresses the essence of life through “art that is born from human life and resembles humans and life.”
In doing so, it dispels common misconceptions about art.
There is no right answer in art.
Yes, that's right.
The work says nothing.
Therefore, it gives the viewer the freedom to come up with their own answers and interpret them in new ways.
This also applies to life.
Just as there is no right answer in art, there is no set answer in life either.
They just have their own answers and stories.
At this time we are free from many things.
Life becomes light and unique when all standards are directed toward oneself rather than others.
I suggest that you properly encounter art so that you can live independently while preserving your humanity, so that you don't become exhausted by trying to meet the standards of others without even knowing who you are, and so that you can shape your life with a firm belief in yourself.
As you encounter the lost artist of your childhood through this book, you will come to a realization.
The beautiful truth that every life is a work of art, each with its own name.
